Following are references from that book and/or Census information that I have in my data base: 1 Henry LEE Birth: ca 1779, NC Death: 1860, Stewart Co., GA Burial: Henry Lee Cemetary, Stewart Co., GA Henry Lee, one of the most beloved, admired and respected men of the community, a deacon in a Baptist Church, Henry Lee, a cousin of "Light Horse" Harry Lee, the father of General Robert E. Lee, was similar in appearance and manner as the famed Civil War General; courtly, cultured, highly educated, deeply religious, quiet and modest. He was strongly patriotic as evidenced by his sons, grandsons and descendants, who to this date have fought and died in every War. Henry and wife, Lettie, came to Stewart Co. from their home in Wilkes Co., GA about 1835, settling in the southern part of the county in the 21st district on the Lumpkin-Georgetown Stage route. They had a large family of children, some of whom were married when they came to Stewart. He was faithful in church, honorable, missionary minded and financially well off. He died at the age of 81 and his wife died a few years later. Their home was a gathering place. They reared several orphan children. His second son, Henry B. Lee, built a large home which is still standing, which was used as a stage stop for change of horses, occasionally travelers slept overnight. A store was nearby which is still in use. Henry B. Lee's father settled a short distance away from w with it's well kept graves. Henry Lee, his wife, several children and grandchildren are probably buried there. Both Henry Lee and his wife were blind before death. The 1850 census shows Henry blind, and the 1860 census shows Letitia blind. In 1860, Letitia had $3600 cash and property valued at $13,200. Her daughter, Martha, was living with her. Henry made returns in 1841 for sons, Jessie, Nathan W. and John Adams (son-in- law). He enlisted as a private, leaving his wife and three children at Ludlow, MS where his people lived. He enlisted in Co. C., 18th Reg. Ms., Infantry, 28 May 1861 . Records show he was discharged 1 Aug 1861, with no reasons given. No records have been found to indicate that he may have been discharged to allow him to re-enlist as a Surgeon, but his living grandsons remembered hearing him tell of his four years of service as an Army Surgeon, most of which time was spent stooping over operating tables. He was captured once by a negro sentry and escaped from Rock Island prison by knocking a negro sentry in the head and floating down the Mississippi River on a log. When the war ended, his first wife was dead and Mississippi was pretty badly torn up and impoverished. In 1867 he went to Louisiana, Franklin Parish, where he bought a large plantation and established a medical practice. In 1872 he married Josephine Gilbert of an old respected family.
