I have no proof of this on a first hand basis for the marriage of Richard Lee and Mary Young...can anyone on the list provide this Below are some of my notes I have picked up. Hugh can you tell us about Richard Lee and Mary Young...has a marriage been Found? Marsha The book Ancestor and Descendants of Gresham Lee of Buckingham County, Virginia written by Richard Edward Lee; 1991. On pg. 8 of this book Mr. Lee states:"...an effort will be made to identify the possible children of this couple (Richard Lee and Mary Young) and relate what's known of their being. At the outset, it must be firmly stated that no female children can be identified. This is a circumstance that evolves from the lack of marriage records of the period, the absence of any wills that would include names, and the fact that very seldom did land ownership include a wife's name, or at least her maiden name. accepting this premise, the possible sons of this could would include Richard II, Thomas, Charles, William, John, Peter and Young." He attributes these children to said couple by close neighborhood residences and general age range of each; associations in land purchases, sales and ownerships. On pg. 10 Mr. Lee describes multiple land transactions between Richard Henry Lee and the afore mentioned "sons". Specifically, "he (Thomas Lee) added 100 acres on the same creek (Fishpond Creek, a part of Goochland County at that time) on Aug 16, 1756, and on Sept 8, 1760, he sold 200 acres to Peter Lee." "This parcel of land was located on the south side of Fishpond Creek and in the close neighborhood of the Richard and Thomas Lee plantations." "Peter was not listed as a tax payer in Buckingham County in 1773 or 1774, however, he was reported in Fincastle County, VA on July 6, 1773. In this report, he was designated as an overseer for a road project. Of course, this area of Fincastle became Washington County in 1776. Peter was a forerunner of the Lees to this area and he was very active in the affairs of Washington County during the balance of the 18th Century." ============================================================================ Part 2 Regarding Peter Lee (in the book Ancestor and Descendants of Gresham Lee of Buckingham County, Virginia written by Richard Edward Lee; 1991.) Mr. Lee states on pg. 40 "Peter was mentioned in a number of actions of the Washington County Court as reported in the Annals of South West Virginia and the records of this court: 8-27-1777: Peter Lee against Cantwell, attachment against garnishee. 11-26-1777: "ordered that Peter Lees ear mark which is a crop and underkeel in each ear be recorded." 8-27-1781: Peter Lee purchased a 400 acre tract lying in Rick Valley and joining the Big Lick tract. 5-21-1782: "ordered that summon issue for Jacob Hice at the instance of John Kirk concerning his survey of land to appear at next court, same against Peter Lee at the instance of Wm. Crabtree." 8-23-1782: "On motion of Wm. Crabtree, ordered that Summon Issue against Peter Lee respecting their Boundary lines of their land." 4-23-1783: Peter Lee purchased a 250 acre tract lying on the North Fork of Holston River. Tract crossed Mill Creek and joined Peter Lees old survey. 5-18-1783: Peter Lee had a 160 acre tract surveyed. The tract lay in Rich Valley near one of his earlier surveys. 2-13-1786: Peter Lee sold a 250 acre tract to Arthur Campbell for 100 pounds. On July 10, 1788, this deal was reversed as Peter purchased it for the same price. Note by Author (Mr. Lee): This tract was in itself a valuable asset as 100 pounds was a fairly high price for land at that time, particularly in this area....this land probably contained salt deposits. 10-9-1787: Peter Lee and wife Sarah sold a tract to Henry Coleman for 160 pounds. This tract lay on the waters of the North Fork of Holston River. (It is also obvious that this tract was very valuable.) NOTE: mention of wife Sarah!! Washington County Personal Property Tax list for 1787, includes data on Peter Lee. Census taken 9-5-1787. Peter Lee - No. of white males above 16 and under 21 -1 Black above 16 - 2 Blacks under 16 - 0 Horses - 7 Cattle - 14 ============================================================================ Goodridge Wilson, in his book Smyth County History, stated that "Around Saltville, the Crabtrees, Hennegars, Lees, Archers, Scotts, Halfields, and others had taken up lands among the very first settlers of the county." Wilson also recited the story of the near massacre in the Rich Valley of Smyth County. Peter Lee and Young Lee were already living there and most likely participated in the run across Clinch Mountain to warn residents of the settlement and get to safety from the raiding Shawnee Indians. Mr. Lee in his book Ancestor and Descendants of Gresham Lee of Buckingham County, Virginia states that "One of the important salt producing enterprises was begun through Evan Lee. Evan purchased the tract of land in 1785 and then sold it to James Crabtree in 1795. In 1801, Wm. King rented the Preston Salt Salt Works for a period of 10 years. King put together a tremendously successful salt producing business..." "Family history hold that Peter Lee once owned the site of the gypsum plant that is just northeast of present day Saltville. While most of the salt that was produced in this area is pumped from underground briny water and cooked and refined in the salt mills, another method of producing this resource is by mining as one might mine coal, particularly coal mines that do not go very deep, such as strip mines. This author viewed an open mine that was either on Young Lee's homestead or very close to it. Traveling northward, this site is on the east side of State 610 just before it reaches State 633 and the head of Beaver Creek. The site is around 1/2 of a mile south of this junction with 633. It has been suggested by neighbors of this community that a pipe was installed to carry this salt material to a processing plant at or near Saltville. There is a tremendous amount of history involving this Lee family in this 10 or 12 mile queare area that includes Saltville." -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, May 22, 2004 8:53 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [Norton AntiSpam] [LEE] Richard Lee of Northhumberland Co., VA In a message dated 5/20/04 8:50:29 PM, mshamilton @kih.net writes: Is anyone tracing the family of Richard Lee of Northhumberland Co., VA md to Mary Young...son Richard Lee b abt 1730 of Goochland to Buckingham Co., Va md Mary Gresham ...whose son Sgt.
