This was a responseI rec'd in June; Your James LEE might (emphasis on might) be the son of Marshall Burr LEE and Ellen MCEWEN, who married in Bartholomew Co, had all their children there. They had a son James born 1837. I have only his name and approximate date of birth - no other info (marriage, death date, etc.). Marshall and Ellen LEE moved to Mahaska Co or Wapello Co IA in 1850, where he died in 1854, she in 1899. I looked thru some of my Bartholomew Co references. In 1821 Benjamin and John PENCE were taxpayers there; so were John LEE, Mark LEE, Joseph LEE, H. William LEE, and Daniel LEE. I have no way of knowing whether any of these LEEs were related to my Thomas Greene LEE, but don't think so. John PENCE was presiding judge at the first Bartholomew County Circuit Court in 1821. He also held the first Probate Court April 1822 - 1827. There was a Lafayette PENCE who was an attorney - I don't know the dates , but about the same time. In 1822 Judge PENCE built a flouring mill near Taylorsville, which was in German twp, contiguous to Flat Rock twp where my LEEs were. My Thomas Greene LEE stayed in Flat Rock twp, while Marshall Burr LEE, probably his brother, per oral history, went on to Iowa with Mary Ann LEE, Marshall's widowed mother. The two families were close (Thomas named his last son Marshall Dorr LEE and had a daughter Mary Ann who was my ancestor [married William Cubberley RICHARDSON]). Do you have the marriage listings from 1821-1838? I have the LEEs but not the PENCE families. There were no PENCE women marrying LEE men during that time in Bartholomew Co. You can reach me at DorisTaz@aol.com. Let me know if anything relates; 6/97 ........................................................................ ...........................................
