All, I am informed that the grave marker for Captain Thomas LEE (RS-NC) in Hawkins Co., TN reads 29 Dec 1729-2 Jul 1816. It doesn't say where birth occurred. Assuming that this marker exists and is legitimate, it is the basis for all the later citing of this birth date and it opens the door to a discussion of Thomas LEE. Is he the son of John LEE, Esq. of Johnston Co., NC, as often suggested, or not? John's son, Thomas, is estimated to be born 1835. I agree that Thomas, the son of John, Esq., went to Hawkins Co., TN and settled there and that Captain Thomas LEE (RS-NC) also settled in Hawkins Co., TN. My challenge is to determine if they are one and the same or two different people. I have read of others accounts which state that they are one; it holds true as long as there weren't two Thomas LEEs in Hawkins Co., TN at the same time. Will Franke, a noted researcher of these LEEs, addressed this aspect, but I'm not sure what he considered. He did conclude that the Thomas of John, Esq. was the same as Capt. Thomas LEE of Hawkins Co., TN. First, I need a confirmation of the dates on the grave marker in Hawkins Co., TN of Captain Thomas LEE.
