    1. [Lee] David B. Lee 1796 PA - 1884 Seneca County, Ohio, parents and connections??

Author: MarkFTC Surnames: Lee, Lefever, Dorr, Burris, Calender Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lee/11869/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm trying to find the next links back from my ggggFather David B. Lee of Sand Ridge, Adams Twp, Seneca, CO, OH. He is my dead-end, but I suspect connection to the NJ Lee's or maybe the Lyme, CT Lee's (see below): Here's the data I have: My my gggFather David B. Lee b. Apr 3, 1796 PA; m. Mary Swanke [Dec 10, 1804 - Jan 11, 1889]; d. Sept 9, 1884 Adams Twp, Seneca Co, OH. Buried with Mary in Lowell Cemetery, Adams Twp, Seneca Co OH. Eldest son John Swanke Lee, b.June 16, 1827 OH, m. Louisa Lefever, 1852 Clyde OH, and migrated to Chickasaw Co IA in the 1850's and subsequently to Ontario, Calif in the 1890's, d. Feb. 9, 1911. (my line) I recently visited Seneca Co OH and found David B. & Mary Swanke Lee's grave (and child Calender among others) in the Lowell Cemetery. But I have been unable to find any firm birthplace other than census records citing PA, and no parents' name. Some of the online public genealogies mix up his and Gershum Lee's children (more on him below), and some conflate him with a David R. Lee (different wife Mary Payne and dates) as well. I suspect finding background on this particular Gershum Lee (not the Kentucky one) might help me: Gershum Lee b.Oct 29, 1788 NJ (or NY?), m. Eve Heileman, d. Apr. 19, 1865, is buried in the Lee-Lay-Butternut Ridge Cemetery, about 5 miles away from the Lowell Cem., with many of his children there, as well as some of David B's descendants and some Lefevers. Gershum had a son David, married Mary Miller, who migrated to the same general area of IA that John Swanke Lee went to, and then came back... which has engendered some confusion between him and David B. (And Eva Heilman died in IA, so maybe Gershum had left and come back as well.) I've got a hunch that Gershum was David B's older brother and that they migrated to Seneca CO at the same time, but can't find anything firm on Gershum's parentage or siblings nor anything at all on David's origins other than the census record listing his and Mary Swank's births as PA. A younger sister of John, Jennie (married Boyd Rork, and also died in Ontario CA), was born 3/26/1836 Summit County, Ohio, so evidently the migration by David B. Lee from PA to Seneca, Co. took some time? No data on locations for the births of the other children: John Swanke Lee (6/16/1827 - 2/9/1911), Catherine (2/8/1830), Calender (10/3/1832 - 5/26/1857), Sarah Jane (3/26/1835), Milton & Mary (twins?)(7/17/1838, Milton d. 1864), Jane (1/13/1842) and Russel (8/14/1845). All this per the family Bible of Louisa Lefever Lee (m. John Swanke Lee) (both inscriptions in the Bible and notes and old obits stored in it) Working further back, but not having the connections, three other bits of data suggest to me connections to the New England Lee's by way of intermarriage in the 1700's: The use of the unusual given name Dorr both by my ggFather Dorr Buris Lee (1856-1944) and a Sandusky County Ohio descendent of Gershum's, Dorr Calender Lee; The Puritan sounding name Calender, both a child (son? daughter?) of David B's and the above descendent of Gershum's; The middle name Burris -- my ggFather above, and the suspicion that David B. Lee's middle name may have been Burris based on the way mother's maiden names get repeated as middle names (a pattern that follows through nearly every generation of my more recent history). Does any of this dovetail with data you have? I'd love to push my knowledge of the Lee's back further! 3. Hi: I have no connection to this family, but I have a little anecdotal data in my files that MIGHT be of use. It is totally uncited, so therefore conjectural in my book, so use it with care. I show that Gershum's father was Richard Moses Lee b. ca 1768, and that Richard's father was Moses Lee b. 1757, prob NJ. Like I said, I don't know the validity of that, but it might give you a place to look. Good hunting!
