My dad had said his dad (Ernest O Lee, 1892 - 1988) "had had to go up to Porterville at times to look after some affairs (or property?) up there." We had wondered if there was some connection with the letterhead from the unknown miner. Another clue in the puzzle comes from the obituary of Jennie L. Lee. She was a sister to my ggfather John S. Lee, who I mentioned in the previous post. Jennie was born in Summit Co, Ohio, 3/26/1836 and died 8/2/1905 Ontario, CA. She married Boyd Rork 5/4/1859 in Bristol, In (she was a schoolteacher there). >From the obit: "Two children blessed their union: Rena A. who was born in 1861 and died in Porterville, California in 1903, and Lee W. who was born in 1871 and is now a physician in Oxford, Neb. "Those who are bereft by her death besides her husband and son are two sisters: Miss Mollie Lee of Kimball, Ohio, and Mrs. C.L. Brown of Hampton, Iowa; two brothers, Russell Lee of Kimbell, Ohio, and J.S. Lee of Ontario, California; two grandchildren: Misses Bernice and Inez Bailey of Porterville, California; and Thomas Tanner of Superior, Nebraska, who though not related by blood relationship, was reared by Mr. and Mrs. Rork as though he was their own son." ... "In 1893 they removed from Iowa, where they had lived since 1861, to Nebraska, and there united with the Presbyterian church, from whose fellowship they were recently received into that of the First Methodist church of Ontario...." The Rork's grave shares a plot in the Bellevue Cemetary, Ontario, CA, with John Lee and his wife, the stones being hard against one another. Anyway, it appears that there was some sort of connection between her, or at least daughter Rena A. and grandchildren Bernise and Inez Bailey, with Porterville. So ... what connection had drawn them there? Did Rena marry a Bailey? And what, if any basis is there in my dad's remembrance of his dad needing to go to Porterville on family business? (Data that raises more questions than it answers!) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
