Yes, maternal line (mtDNA) and paternal line (Y-DNA) used to be the only choices. Now there is autosomal DNA testing that helps you find relative matches from all ancestors. It is wonderful for people like me who have no paternal family members to test. :-) I have been having my DNA tested for 10 years. Two primary players have emerged in the DNA testing for genealogy business. They and others I know of have proven to be trustworthy. Key is understanding what a test can do and not expecting more from it than the test can promise. As you implied - it is important to do your homework by gathering information from a variety of sources before you pay your money.
