    3. There's a Death Record in the BR Diocese Records for a Louis Lee, aged 40 years, 1866 (I think - I didn't transcribe that part). It's from Ascension Catholic Church in Donaldsonville. This could possibly be your Louis. Given the proximity to my family (Lees of Eastern Ascension/Iberville Parish), I'd first assume that Louis and Mary were part of my line. And I'm definitely not descended from Robert E. Lee (the DNA doesn't match). But, in the early 1800's people were flooding into LA, particularly along the River. When my guys got there around 1800, there were only 4 other Lee families in Southern LA. By 20 years later, there were lots... and most were unrelated to the ones already there. I don't see a Louis or a Mary of the appropriate age range in my line, so I doubt if you and I are kin. But, it's possible. Please bear in mind that there are over 200 known Lee lines out there, and only one is the famous "Lee of Virginia" line that produced Robert E. Lee. This includes a couple dozen that came through VA. Nearly every Southern Lee family has a legend that they were somehow kin to The General, and this legend has been passed down. Almost always, this turns out to be a false myth. One factor in your favor: members of the Lee of VA line DID come to LA, and to the Bayou Lafourche area (Donaldsonville to Thibodaux and further south). It's possible that your line IS part of that famous family. Just not likely. If you wish, I can work with you offline on this. Contact me at dennis AT gazinkus DOT com. My great grandmother also said she was the niece or great niece of Robert E Lee. Her name was Camilla Cassard Mollere. Her mother was Mary Lee born around 1864 in Virginia. Mary Lee's parents (according to a marriage certificate from Baton Rouge Catholic Diosece) was Louis Lee and Marty Gitsnard. We have been trying for years to find Louis Lee. Can you possibly look to see if Louis Lee was any relation at all to Robert E Lee? I would appreciate any info you could find. My aunt, mother, and myself have looked for years mainly focusing on LA but the bloodline stops with Mary Lee's marriage certificate or so we think. I think we need to shift to VA records to find the rest. Thank you for your time. Melissa Nagle Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
