Author: DennisLee42 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lee/855.874.877.881.937.944.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have a fairly big set of files of Lee research. Some of it is of questionable value, but every once in awhile I find a hint that is useful to someone. This may be one. The only family of Lees I found around Wilcox Co, AL was the Hugh Lee line. This is a big family of Lees in the South, mostly. Several books have been written on the Hugh Lee family, including one by my friend Dr. Rebecca "Becky" Owens, herself a member of that line. Specifically, I find a William Eaton Lee who is of about the right timeframe. He - according to my dubious records - was born 3 Sep 1801, married Dorcas Shepard Stokes, and died 28 May 1861. My notes say that they "moved to LA". And that's it. No record of children. William Eaton was the son of John "Cato" Lee of Brunswick Co, VA and Wilcox Co, AL and his wife Nancy Holland. John was the son of Peter Lee, Jr. and Mary Cato. Peter, Jr. was the son of Peter Lee, Sr. (b. 1711) and Elizabeth Lundy. Peter, Sr. was the son of William Lee, Sr. and Rebecca Burchett. William was the son of Hugh Lee (III?) and Ann Tatum. Hugh III was the son of Hugh Lee (II? B. ca 1640) and Ann Barnett or Harrison. And Hugh II MAY have been the son of Hugh Lee, b. ca 1609, England. I don't know where this information came from (probably several places and I compiled it over time), so use it with caution. But it gives you a place to look. And if you'd like to contact Becky for more authoritative info, I can give you her email address. Contact me offline at dennis AT gazinkus DOT com. Dennis Lee Wimberley, TX P.S. The Hugh Lee line has been DNA-profiled, and I *think* even a representative of the John "Cato" Lee branch has been tested. If you can find a male Lee in your family to be tested, this might be a way to verify whether you're part of this line or not. 3. Dennis, Thanks for always helping those of us who research our elusive Lees. Although I haven't worked on my Arthur Lee line for a while, I still have the notes you sent in my files. The line descends from JOHN LEE of Nansemond County, VA, NOT from "The Lees of Virginia." (If you know of someone searching this particular family, I'd like to hear from them.) Best I can tell from a crude internet search is that Mary Kendell died in 1694 and that Hancock then married Sarah Elizabeth Allerton in 1696. So, it seems like no divorce was involved. Children with Mary include Anna and Richard. I am descended from Richard. Children from Sarah are Isaac, John, Hancock and Elizabeth. Hancock and Elizabeth were twins. I think the twins were born the same year Hancock died. Sarah must have had an awful hard time with all those little ones. Henry Lee>Edward Lee>Henry Lee According to what I've heard, Edward Lee had several sons, including Samuel, Henry, and John. Edward eventually relcated to York County, SC, where he died. Henry relocated to GA, where he died. I'm willing to share info. Thanks, Robert Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: photo66666 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lee/3305.3800.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I know for sure Robert E Lee stayed at the Lewis Mansion in Elizabeth PA just outside of Pittsburgh for extended times before the Civil War. The family story goes that he used it as a 1/2 way point between duty stations of Baltimore and St Louis. The Lewis' seem not to be from the Meriwether Lewis clan but rather Col Andrew Lewis. I understand General Robert E Lee's father General Harry Lighthorse Lee had close ties with the Pittsburgh area during the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. Col Alexander Hamilton was his aid and Captain Meriwether Lewis was Alexander Hamilton's aid. The Lewis's were boat builders in Pittsburgh and they, according to John Fetch, owned the patent on Meriwether Lewis' boat. The Patent was issued by Thomas Jefferson when George Washington was signed into office in 1789. It seems General Robert E Lee was married into the Washington family. It also seems that Cadet Robert E Lee was a roommate with Cadet Meriwether Lewis Clark at West Point. Meriwether Lewis Clark was the son of William Clark of Lewis and Clark Expedition out of Pittsburgh in 1803. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
