Written records are the way to go for proof. You are so right the search is what genealogy is all about...if it weren't we'd have all quit! History is fascinating and today on The History Channel the Civil War is on almost constantly, 150 years Anniversity. I understand it is a complicated and sensitive subject but General Robert E. Lee was a gentleman and a scholar and joined the Confederacy because of his home being in Virginia. He was opposed to raising arms against his home state, hey don't mess with Texas!!! So, keep on a-digging! >From one Southern Belle to another, Betty Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. So rather than discouragement, I am feeling a little more confident this evening. If Arthusa was a relative, certainly he would have come the short distance to visit the family at least once during his years in Texas (In between dealing with Mexico and the Indians of course.) Also, unrelatedly, I found an article on Google that actually mentions Lee's relation to Arthusa's paternal grandmother Rebecca Vermillion, however it would not download to my computer...darn thing! I have chased lots of rabbit trails so far in my ancestry search (including pirate and cowboy tall tales) but because I know my great aunts and my great grandmother, I have a feeling this one is the real deal. But even if it is not...the search is half the fun. I have learned quite a bit of information about the General today, and learning can never be wrong! Multiple speakers told us an important thing to remember about family stories is: one don't ignore them and two don't believe everything you hear. Prove them out with sources such as land titles, marriage records, death certificates, federal census, etc. and even these can be incorrect. Another thing they told us is; if all of the people who supposedly came over on The Mayflower were actually on board...it would have sunk in the harbor. Everyone wants a famous person as an ancestor, beginning with Washington and coming right on down to Robert E. Lee, especially in the south. You will find folks from the north want U.S. Grant of course! So hang tough and have proofs of your lineage not just what you are told. However, I have not found a relation to the Lee's on my great grandmother's side. I am wondering if anyone out there may have the answer for me. My great grandmother's name was Lettie Louisa Castleman (b. 1894 Mississippi; married Sam McDonald; d. 1983 Robert Lee, TX.) On an interesting note: I do have one Lee in my family tree from the correct time period, but from the wrong side of the family. On the McDonald side, my fourth great grandmother's name is Susan B. Lee and she is from Virginia. She was born around 1788 and married William B. Steward who was also from Virginia and later lived in Tennessee. Their son John Seaton Lee Steward is my third great grandfather. He was born in 1821 in Tennessee but spent most of his life in Texas where he married Ann Elizabeth Mackey and died in 1888 in Will's Point, TX. Author: MarkFTC Surnames: Lee, Rork, Bailey Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lee/11375.1.1.1.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Porterville is another bit of mystery. My dad had said his dad (Ernest O Lee, 1892 - 1988) "had had to go up to Porterville at times to look after some affairs (or property?) up there." We had wondered if there was some connection with the letterhead from the unknown miner. Another clue in the puzzle comes from the obituary of Jennie L. Lee. She was a sister to my ggfather John S. Lee, who I mentioned in the previous post. Jennie was born in Summit Co, Ohio, 3/26/1836 and died 8/2/1905 Ontario, CA. She married Boyd Rork 5/4/1859 in Bristol, In (she was a schoolteacher there). >From the obit: "Two children blessed their union: Rena A. who was born in 1861 and died in Porterville, California in 1903, and Lee W. who was born in 1871 and is now a physician in Oxford, Neb. "Those who are bereft by her death besides her husband and son are two sisters: Miss Mollie Lee of Kimball, Ohio, and Mrs. C.L. Brown of Hampton, Iowa; two brothers, Russell Lee of Kimbell, Ohio, and J.S. Lee of Ontario, California; two grandchildren: Misses Bernice and Inez Bailey of Porterville, California; and Thomas Tanner of Superior, Nebraska, who though not related by blood relationship, was reared by Mr. and Mrs. Rork as though he was their own son." ... "In 1893 they removed from Iowa, where they had lived since 1861, to Nebraska, and there united with the Presbyterian church, from whose fellowship they were recently received into that of the First Methodist church of Ontario...." The Rork's grave shares a plot in the Bellevue Cemetary, Ontario, CA, with John Lee and his wife, the stones being hard against one another. Anyway, it appears that there was some sort of connection between her, or at least daughter Rena A. and grandchildren Bernise and Inez Bailey, with Porterville. So ... what connection had drawn them there? Did Rena marry a Bailey? And what, if any basis is there in my dad's remembrance of his dad needing to go to Porterville on family business?
