Author: hobokenblue Surnames: Lee Stafford White Lightning Bright Thunder Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lee/3548.3819.1.1.1.2.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Laverne - I am researching my grandfather, Harold Stafford Lee, who came from Ontario (b. 1883, went to America in 1887, apparently). He told my mother that his grandmother (or greatgrandmother) more likely was an "Indian Princess." This fits the facts of General Charles Lee's marriage to Bright Thunder, the daughter of White Lightning, a Mohawk chief of the Seneca clan around 1758, during his time serving in the French and Indian war. It is recorded that she ha a boy and a girl, and I believe moved to Canada after that. My mother said my grandfather visited a reservation as a boy, but she doesn't know more details. If anything about this rings a bell, I'd love to know. Trying to track down Harold Lee's family for my mom. Pamela Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Also, keep in mind that every generation liked stating they were first cousin to R.E.L. when, not everyone can be. You may be related at the 3rd, 4th even 9th cousin level. This is such a fascinating family to research, but is very exhausting as there are so many dead ends. So many with the same names! Good luck! Author: MistletoeLady Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.lee/4253.4335.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Showing someone as their own cousin to Robert E. Lee means that she was most likely married to a cousin. In the earlier days, nothing was understood about blood lines and genetic mutations, therefore if first cousins wanted to marry, they married. This not only tangles up the vines of our Family Tree, it creates genetic problems later down the road. Good luck! We too, are searching for that connection in the Lee line. I doubt there is anyone who knows the straight lines all the way back to England/Scotland with the Lee family. They were quite mobile and traveled from country to country often. Even today, we see the trend. Strong genes run deep! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
