Where did this John Lee go? 1810 Charlotte Co., VA census, aged 26-45 1812, Feb. married in Charlotte Co. to Frances WEBB (widow) (Maybe Frances Terry m. Lazarus Webb 1807.) 1820 Lunenburg Co., VA census 1 male 26-45 4 females under 10 1 female 26-45 3 in agriculture 4 slaves total This family of Lees lived in Charlotte County, right at the Lunenburg County line. John Lee Jr left the area apparently between 1820 & 1830. If he had any sons, they were born after 1820. The last mention I have of him was mention of him in a letter: In Aug 1845 or 1847 his nephew, Edward Lee Jr., wrote from Pickens Co., AL, to his sister in Lunenburg Co., VA. "I believe now that Tennessee is the best place to go get prosperous. . . I was in Tennessee last summer and I liked that country tolerable well. The land is very rich but very high. OUR OLD UNCLE JOHN LEE wanted me to move up there but I rather go with you all to Texas if I can." It sounds as if Uncle John Lee was already in Tenn., but maybe Alabama? Any clue to this John LEE? In a message dated 97-06-08 20:06:08 EDT, you write: << NO info on Herbert or James But thanksI will keep it for ref. When u have Lea instead of Lee canit be a spelling error? All my Lee boys dissappeared. Would U Have a way of lup Civil War vets for me To try that angle. HATE TYPING!!!!!!!! obviously. Again thanks! KLee367710 >> KLee, I have found both spellings (and also Leigh) in my research. I have found both Lea and Lee for my family alone. So, not necessarily a spelling error but just the different way the people recording thought it should be spelled. I am right now working on doing the marriage index for LEE for East TN marriages and then (if I hold up) I have some census (1840, 1850 and 1860) that I want to get entered and that I plan to share when I do get it entered. And, I also have W. TN LEE and LEA marriages. No mid TN yet but plan to have it too sometime. Sorry, but I have no way to look up Civil war records right now. I do have the actual civil war record for my Ninian (Nineon) LEE but that's it. Maybe your local library can help you out on that. :-) Cathy
Thanks.

I felt bad not listing all the LEE marriages that I found, but I am working with a broken right hand, and have to hunt & peck left-handed. I have completed a small portion of my project to enter all my LEA/LEE info into my computer and thought I might as well send it on.... so here it is. This an index of East TN LEA Grooms and Brides. It includes the names, marriage date, and County Symbol for the County the marriage occured in. East TN includes the following counties (with each county symbol following the name): Anderson (A), Blount (Bo), Campbell (C), Carter (Ct), Claiborne (Cl), Grainger (Gr), Greene (Ge), Hamilton (H), Hawkins (Hw), Jefferson (Je), Johnson (Jo), Knox (K), McMinn (Mc), Meigs (Me), Monroe (Mo), Rhea (R), Roane (Ro), Scott (S), Sevier (Se), Washington (Wa). Where there are 2 dates entered the second is the date the marriage was actually recorded. All of these entries were taken from Sistler and Associates early East TN marriages. I think I may have a theory--was your James Lee b. in VA? Was he possibly a son of William Lee? Possibly was he a brother of Wm M Lee? At one time, did he live in Butler Co., KY? I think I have deduced that William Lee b. 1777 in VA, m. Frances, and moved to Butler Co., KY--he died in 1815 or so. His widow, Frances lived on the property on Big Muddy Creek--she paid taxes until she died in ca. 1832, then James Lee sold his 1/5 share of property to Wm. M. Lee, and he moved. Possibly, was this your James Lee? Do you see any connection? Thanks, DVHaack@aol.com
Nothing clicks at the moment. I'll get back to you in a few days - we are going out of town for a few days. Doris Tazelaar

Re my message, lst sentence, "One parcel of land that he bought in IN" - I haven't learned how to save something in "compose mail" (offline) and then pick it up later. I was interrupted, thought I had corrected my problem, and went blissfully on my way. One parcel of land that he bought in IN was signed for by James LEE. Another parcel, nearby, was purchased by Lewis LEE. I think these transactions were made in 1837, although my TGLEE was in Bartholomew Co by 1823. Thomas Greene LEE and Jane (Jennie) MCQUEEN named their children like this: (1) James Mcqueen LEE (b. 1822); (2) Mary Ann LEE (b. 1824, m. William C. RICHARDSON); (3) Elizabeth LEE (b. 1827, m. MCKINNEY); (4) Amanda M. LEE (b. 1829) (5) Martha J. LEE (b. 1831); (6) Missouri LEE (b. 1834, m. DEAN); (7) Virginia LEE (b. 1838) (8) Nancy LEE (b. 1841); (9) T. A. Howard LEE (b. 1846); (10) Marshall Dorr LEE, b. 1846 and (11) Melissa LEE (b. 1849, m. Noah PERRY). All children were born in Bartholomew Co. Thomas Greene LEE d. 1874, Jennie died 1874, three months later. TGLEE's obituary states he had 12 children, 8 girls, 4 boys, with 3 girls and 2 boys living when he died. My Mary Ann LEE RICHARDSON died 1869, presumably after childbirth. My grandmother, Mary Clara RICHARDSON, was 5 when she died, so there was very little family history passed on to her, as she was raised by the RICHARDSON side of the family. Thomas Greene LEE's brother, Marshall Burr LEE, was born 22 Dec 1810 in Georgia, married 15 Oct 1828, Bartholomew Co IN to Ellen MCEWEN; d. 5 Sep 1854 (typhoid fever), Wapello, IA. Ellen d. 1899, Wapello, IA, possibly Fremont. Children of Marshall Burr LEE: (1) Xantippi, b. 1832, m. James HARKER (2) Agnes, b. ca 1834, m. PHILLIPPI (3) Catherine, b. 1835, m. I've had correspondence with the other John LEE family in Bartholomew Co IN. It looked like there could be a connection, as they got to Bartholomew Co about the same time. That's the trouble - oral history says the father of Thomas Greene LEE was John LEE who married Mary Ann BRANDON. I have is no further information on John LEE except where he married Mary Ann, and who his bondsman was (Philip LEE). I know about the Philip LEE in Maryland - think he returned to England? But I can't find anything in NC or TN records on a will - and I live in Maryland, have found nothing here. sighhhhhhhhhhh. Another matter - John LEE spelled his name LEA, although that could have been the clerk's preference, not his. And Abner LEA was married not long before John, in the same county. If we could find out who John LEE and Philip LEE were, we'd have solved a mystery the family has been working on or writing about for the past 50 years. I've wondered if Thomas Greene LEE was illegitimate - but he was educated well, knew law, etc., and had enough money to buy land. (Some of it he may have gotten by rounding up stray horses in Missouri, too. There are records of his doing that.) No, I know of no connection to Thoms LEE of Hawkins, TN.
For those of you researching John Lee of Bartholomew Co. IN. I also have a John Lee, son of William, b. 1767 m. Isabel Hays; moved from VA to Greene Co. PA, to Warren Co. OH to Bartholomew Co. IN where he died. His widow married Colston Payne of Fauquier Co. VA. This John dies in Bartholomew County. Who was the father of the below named John? Is he connected to the Thomas Lee of Hawkins Co. TN? Pat DorisTaz@aol.com wrote: > > Angela and Greg - Maybe, just maybe! > > My John LEE, no definite dates, probably 1767-1812, m.
