John Lee married Dorcus McGowen in Clarke Co, GA. in 1824. Their had their first child a son William M. Lee (1826-1907) was born in 1826. John died while their 6 children were young and Dorcus died in 1848 leaving 6 young children including William. No wills or estates have been found concerning John or Dorcus Lee in Clarke Co., Ga. Other than the will and the fact that there is a John on the 1830 census and Darcus on the 1840 census there are NO indications to this family lived in Clarke Co., Ga. The problem with the 1830 census is there was also another John Lee family in Clarke Co., Ga. at the same time. This John Lee was married to an Elizabeth White and he also died in the 1830s, BUT he left a will and his childred are found on the 1850 census. John and Dorcus' children are not found on the 1850 or 1860 census of Clarke co., GA. and none have ever been located except William who marrys in 1866 to Oliff Pridgeon in Clarke Co., GA. and from then on William and his family can be traced. ANY help in find this John Lee and Dorcus would be APPRECIATED!!! Becky
George Bowers LEIGH is son of James Thompson Leigh and wife mary Coon. He was born 25 may 1855 in Indiana probably Randolph county and later lived in Illinois and Carroll county, Missouri. He married a Sarah______ 1874 in Carroll county and was last seen in 1880 census. No further record of him. Has anyone information on this individual? Kay Kayfleming@aol.com
Am posting this to Lottie, with a copy to the Lee list since it may prove valuable for others. Dear Lottie, Unfortunately, this information (below) is incorrect. I have researched your third generation Lee for years and know quite a lot about him. He is my ancestor through his son Henry who married Mary Dunham. In fact, generations have been looking for this William Lee's parents. There is no evidence in any document that his middle name was Fairfax. Unless George Lee had a son William by his first wife, the William I know he had was b. 1750. My William was born 16 March 1742; had three wives according to testimony of his son Zephaniah (two whose last names we really do not know and the third may have been a married name); had 21 children and died in Warren Co., OH. My mother discovered the exact date of his birth by reading the John Lee journal citation on his death and I recently found the name of another daughter, Phoebe. It took about 17 years to settle his estate in OH and I think I have copies of all that data. Circumstantial evidence and John Lee's journal places William Lee's family in Frederick Co. VA for a period of time around 1760's and possibly before. The family history maintains that William was a Virginian and a relative of the VA Lees. Certainly, this family was in VA but whether the origins are here or not has been debated. His sons married many of the Baptist faith whose origins were from PA and NJ. (My Dunhams, for instance, and your Isabel Hays' family....she, the daughter of William Hays and Ann Hoge out of Bucks co., PA). Nevertheless, there are a couple of families that give this Lee strong ties to VA. This John Lee and Colston Payne of Fauquier Co., VA are closely connected. In fact, I believe that Colston Payne lived with John and Isabel in Deerfield Twp. Warren Co. OH. When spouses die, Isabel Hays Lee married Colston Payne. Further, their children marry and both this John and his brother, Henry buy land in Illinois territory from Colston who was in War of 1812. Also, there seems to be a tie to the Reno family of Prince William, VA. And, lastly, there is a birth date of 16 May 1741/2 recorded in the Christ Church, Middlesex Co., VA Paris Register (keep in mind baptisms were not always on day of birth and this record has been copied off ca. 1800's). This may be a bit much for now, however, have other evidence of related families going along the same path west. Happy to share the information I have and it is very concrete from William Lee down. We are researching these LEEs, would appreciate contact from others researching any of the following: William Lee: b. Ca. 1638 d Jan 1693/94 m. Ann Unk. Issue: 1. William Leigh/Lee b. 23 Jun 1683 2. John b. Other researchers claim this line descended from William, second son of Sir John and Joyce Romney Lee. Conflicting research shows this son died young. If you have information to help solve this riddle, I'd like to hear from you. We continue our research on the decendents. Hi folks... In the course of researching other family lines in Cumberland, Cape May, Salem and Glouchester Counties in New Jersey, I ran across a source of information known as the "Sheppard Folders". Charles Sheppard was a genealogist in the late 1800's to early 1900's who amassed quite a bit of information on the early settlers of the above counties...The folders contain his handwritten charts, verbatim will transcriptions and so on. I've got microfilm# 0441369 (one of 17 of Sheppard's work) that includes his folder on the surname LEE for another 30 days or so...I'll be happy to do lookups for anyone who is interested....please provide me with as much information as possible on your line...the data runs from early 1700 to mid 1800's. Or you can order the film yourself from your local FHC. Robin

Im trying to sort Lees to find my Lee family, from VA to Nelson, later Hardin Co KY in late 1700s. I just copied all the Lee marriages in Nelson/Hardin Cos from two books at the DAR Library. Thought Id post them to the list for the benefit of anyone else who needs them. But if any of you can tell me anything about the families any of these Lees came from how any of them fit together as families Id be very grateful for an e-mail. Many thanks.
