    3. Does anyone have a file of the lineage on the internet or computer of Henry Lee family, whom Doris has just spoken about. If anyone could send me the file through e-mail, I would greatly appreciate it. 1. LEE, Francis, born c. 1809, U.S.
    2. REGINALD ROSS
    3. I have been looking for about 15 years for this Francis Lee. The details I have are; Francis Lee was born c. 1809 in the U.S.. His mother Cruicy Russel Ligh remarried in 1832 in Markham, Ontario, Canada, to Jean Baptiste Lemoine. Therefore, the family came to Canada sometime between 1809 and 1832. I do not know the father's name. Francis married about 1840 in Markham, On, CA to Elizabeth Grainger. They had 10 children as follows; James Joseph LEE Caroline Elizabeth LEE Julia LEE Russell LEE Marshall (Mack) LEE William Francis LEE Adolphus Homer LEE Albert LEE Ellen LEE Aurelia LEE I have studied the Robert E. Lee line and have not been able to make any connection. I have looked through any LEE genealogy on the net that I can find. Recently, Edward Plunkett posted some information that I found interesting; that of Frank Adolph LEE. I do not often see the names Frank and Adolph together. The name Francis and William have been passed down in our line. The above name of Aldolphus has always made me wonder where it came from. Does anyone have information that may relate to this line? Has anyone heard of the name Cruicy before? It's origin? Are there any suggestions for where to search, when so little is known? While the birth place of Francis is the U.S., his origin is English. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jocelyn Lee

    1. Re: LEE, Jessie & William 1800s
    2. I have a xerox copy of "The Henry Lee Family" page 900 of History of Stewart County (GA) which follows the line of Henry Lee, b ca 1779, NC, d 1860, Stewart Co GA; m Letitia (Lettie) --- b ca 1;779, NC; came from their home in Wilkes Co, GA to Stewart Co about 1835. The family account says he was a cousin of "Light Horse" Harry Lee, the father of Gen Robert E. Lee, but offers no proof nor does it give Henry Lee's parentage. And they follow the family to Jessie Lee m. John Chennault, with their son being Claire Lee Chennault. I can't give you all the details as the xerox copy is poor. The Lewis Lee family is also followed, with the statement that although the families of Lewis Lee and Henry Lee lived within two miles of each other, there is no known familial relationship. Let me know if this helps. It doesn't document, but it gives some mighty good leads as to where the families were, etc. DorisTaz@aol.com

    1. William Lee>VA/MD.1651
    2. Patricia Junkin
    3. There is much work still to be done on on the Lees of Virginia. I have studied this Lee family and other Lee families in Pennsylvania and New York. I would appreciate a discussion of the Lee family....I have given two copies of original records to the Lee Library in Alexandria, VA one naming at least two children that had not been named for John and Elizabeth Bell Lee. My research is priimary when I can find it. Re: Recent postings about Edmund Jennings #12...William Lee There has always been something quite mysterious about this William. Do you have documentation for a marriage to Alice Felton and his children William and John? I know he inherited his brother's land in Maryland. I know that Hancock lived there (MD) at least 12 years and he wills to the "gentlewoman in Maryland" I believe. That Mary Lee is handling William Lee's estate siignals she was named by William and not appointed by the state. Who was Hancock Pope? Who was the Mary Lee that marries John Fearne in Gloucester Co...Fearne becomes guardian of Lee children? #26 1. Anne/Anna, dau of Hancock and presumably Mary Kendall. EJL states Anna Lee was born prior to 5 Jan 1682, living as late as 1754; married twice. 1) to William Armistead by whom she had: John and Judith, Martha, Mary. Armistead d. ca 13 Jun 1711[Middlesex Co. Will Bk. A 1698-1713 pp. 46&52: William Armistead is named in the wills of William Churchill and Ralph Wormeley and is called brother by Wormeley.” Anna was remarried by 1726 to 2) William Eustace. John Eustace’ son, William m. Anne Lee. John Eustace’s will made 23 Dec 1701, pro 15 April 1702 .. names his son William, names William W.____and Elizabeth, his wife, names Thos. Pinchard and Margaret his wife, names John Steptoe and Maurice Linah on the day of his freedom. Exors. were Thomas Pinchard, James Innis and John Steptoe. John Steptoe signs inventory of Hancock Lee; then marries widow of John Eustace by 16 Nov 1719. John Eustaces’ son William then marries Anne, daughter of Hancock and Sarah Allerton. Wm. Eustace adms. the estate of Sarah Allerton Lee on 16 Jun 1731. 21 May 1735 he is one of the exors. of a Richard Lee and pr. 1735. Wm. Eustace of Wicomico Parish d. between 3 Sep 1739 and 10 Mar 1740, names wife Ann, sons John, Wm. , Hanciock and Issac. Daus. were Elizabeth, Sarah and Ann...he wills land in Prince William, bot in 1727 from George Rust[Pr. Wm Deeds p. 198-202 and in King Geo. from George Evans to Geo. Rust 1727], to his son William...wills Issac land in Pr. Wm. he bought on Pignut Ridge from Capt. John Lee, wit: Elizabeth Howson, Thomas Edwards, Thomas Gaskins.:Northumberland Records...wills p. 65 A (Ref. deed in Warren Co, OH...] If you note the names of the children by Eustace, it would appear that Anne has named her children after the Allertons, Sarah and Issac and not the Kendalls. Could she have been the daughter of Sarah Allerton? #160 Sarah Lettice, dau. Richard and Grace Ashton m. 1759 Philip Richard Fendall, d. 1761. Regards, Pat

    3. I printed out all four of the LEE genealogies received through LEE-L. In my line I have two LEEs that have few ties so far, in our research. In the lines e-mailed I discovered several names that ring true to mine. If anyone has a connection to these names I'd appreciate the info. Susannah LEE b) 6 May 1770 Rutland VT m) 10 Nov 1787 Lima NY to Jeffery A HUMPHREY d) 10 April 1846 Lima NY In one sourse she is called "Betsey" LEE...sister, cousin? She named her oldest son William, not a name from father's side... Her father is reported to be a Thomas LEE. Sounds awfully familiar doesn't it? "Polly" LEE b) 1772 m) Robert MILLER d) 19 Oct 1828 Franklin NY Are Susannah, Betsey or Polly the same or related to the women of the same names in the large US Lee genealogy sent through the LEE mailing? Both women are my direct line. Thank you to anyone with information. Jan Johnson

    3. <bigger> Given the interesting comments on the Thomas Lee family, I decided after lurking for a while it might be a good idea to post a work in progress. There are known errors and omissions and in the interest of brevity I have decided not to post the references. Nonetheless, I believe the majority to be true. This includes Lee families in NY, IL, CA, MN, NB, among others. I have endeavored to trace both female and male lines. My hope is that others who have been lurking as have I will respond, realizing that more than Lees of VA are represented. One known error is that abigail lee ross has at least one other child, various given as Nathan or John N. of Kentucky. My goal is to track each line to living descendents. 1. LEE, Edmund Jennings, 1797, US Lineage-Generation 11 (2-4) Correction
    2. Lorien Gunsallus referenced the following extract from my Generation 11 (2 of 4) message dated 97-08-30 18:18:52 EDT. She states near the end that "This erroneously attaches Capt. Thomas LEE, son of John Lee, Esq. of Johnston Co. NC to this line. This information has been around for a long time and has been proven to be incorrect, but continues to live on in publications for all to see." I apologize for perpetuating a lineage that has been proven incorrect and hope the following will help those that have an interest to correct this information. Also... 1. Re: LEE, Edmund Jennings, US Lineage-1 thru 10 generations (1 of 4)
    2. I am responding to your query regarding Edmund Jennings Lee (1797 is Junior), William Fitzhugh Lee (1804, Fitzhugh is an old family name of the early 1700's), etc. Since I have a pretty lengthy linage that I believe is linked with reasonably certain references, I am including 12 generations. E-mail (4 of 4) has an Index and a full copy file in MS Word Rich Text Format. English Lineage Families-LEE. 7B 87B A record of "The Lee Family and its Descendants", by Rev. Walter M. Lee follows: In the Library of Congress is a card index file of about 40 books and pamphlets dealing exclusively with the history of the Lee family of America. The Lee's are of English descent, members of this family having been in the Army of Cromwell. The Lees of America are, according to authorities consulted by the writer, divided into two general families, one of which begins in Virginia, and the other in Connecticut. Members of the latter branch (Connecticut) are scattered throughout the West and Northwest. Members of the Virginia family are scattered generally throughout the South and Southwest. Richard Henry Lee, the eminent American statesman of Revolutionary times, and Henry Lee, Colonel in the Army of the Revolution, as well as General Robert E. Lee were members of the Southeast branch. In Halifax District, near the Virginia line, were Daniel, Green and John Lee. These names are common in the family under special treatment, viz., the family of John Lee, who removed from South Carolina to Georgia as a pioneer settler, located in Wilkinson Co., seven miles south of Irwinton, the county seat, on the Fairchilds plantation, and died not many years afterwards. Elizabeth, the wife of John Lee, after death of her husband, became the wife of a young man, John T. Fairchilds, who was one of the leading families of that section. Her bones lie in the Fairchilds cemetery beside those of her two husbands. This cemetery is located on what is known as the James Knight land on the road from Allentown to Irwinton, via Pleasant Plains Church. Crossing Maiden Creek going north, one find himself on the Knight-Fairchilds-John Lee plantation and the cemetery is located just off the road to the right, after crossing the creek, about 7 miles from Irwintown. Richard Lee, of Virginia is the beginning of the Lee family in America. Genealogists so far have been unable to determine who his father was, but it is generally supposed that he was from the Irish Thomas Lee family, who went from England to Ireland in the latter part of the sixteenth century. It is known, however, from his coat of arms that he was from the "Conton" branch of the family. Col. Richard Lee married Ann Hancock and to them were born eight children, namely: Richard (born 1647 and died 1714), from whom is directly descended General Robert E. Lee; John; Francis; William; Elizabeth; Charles; and Hancock (born 1653). 88A pg. 49 "Richard Lee; of a good family in Shropshire (and whose Picture I am told is now in Cotton, near Bridgenorth, the seat of Launcelot Lee, Esqr.), some time in the Reign of Charles the first, went to the Colony of Virginia, as Secretary, and one of the King's Privy Council. . . He was a man of good Statue, comely visage, an enterprising genius, a sound head, vigorous spirit and generous nature. When he got to Virginia, which was at that time not much cultivated, he was so pleased with the Country that he made large settlements there with his servants he had carried over; after some years, he returned to England, and gave away all the lands he had taken up, and settled at his own expense, to those servants he had fixed on them; some of whose descendents are now possessed of very considerable Estates in that Colony. After some Time in England, he returned again to Virginia, with a fresh band of Adventurers, all of whom he settled there". These are the few lines, written by William Lee in 1771, give the earliest information (now to be found) of Richard Lee, the progenitor of the Lee family whose history this volume records. From this statement, it is learned that Richard Lee was descended from the Coton branch of the Lees of Shrooshire. Somewhere about 1710-11 he had gone over to London and settled there as a Virginia merchant in partnership with his maternal uncle, Thomas Corbin. Very little information can be found concerning him. By the kindness of William Blackston Lee, Esq., the few items were copied from the London records: 1719 ............ 1724. On the 16th of November 1724, there was issued a commission to John Crabb, creditor of the late Richard Lee, late of the parish of St. Olave, Hart Street, London, but who died in the parish of St. Anne Westminister in Co.: Midd. "Yielding and paying therefor the yearly rent of one peper corb only on the feast day of the birth of Our Lord God." This lease is mentioned in the will of Thomas Lee. He was living as late as 1749, for his nephew mentioned him, at tha date, as being "now in possession" of his estate, Paradise. He left no male heirs, for his brother, Philip Lee, of Maryland, willed the reversion to Francis' estate to his own sons, thus: To "sons, Thomas and Richard and their heirs forever, to be equally divided between them, that tract of land in Gloucester county, Paradise; the reversion left me with my deceased father, Col. Richard Lee, of Virginia." One of his sons, Thomas (in his will, dated in August, 1749) bequeathed his "moiety of a tract of land lying in Virginia, called Paradise, now in possession of Francis Lee, left me by my honored father, Philip Lee, Esquire, to my son Thomas Sim Lee, and my daughter Sarah Brook Lee."Probably Francis never married; at any rate he had no male heirs as late as 1749, or the reversion to his estate could not have been devised. Carolina To Georgia. Remarks Several descendents believe John Lee was born bef 1760. Who was the father of John Lee b. 1763? 7 p. 907 Mrs. H.M. Dixon questioned the statement that John Lee was the son of Capt. Thomas Lee due to the record showing Lewis Lee was born in 1780 and John his father with date of 1763 which would make John 17 years old when Lewis Lee was born in 1780. A descendent of Captain Thomas Lee has documented proof that Captain Thomas Lee was not the father of John. Captain John Lee (1707-1789) was the son of Hancock Lee, Esquire (1663-1709) 7B87B These names are common in the family under special treatment, viz., the family of John Lee, who removed from South Carolina to Georgia as a pioneer settler, located in Wilkinson Co., seven miles south of Irwinton, the county seat, on the banks of Maiden Creek. He is said to have purchased the Fairchilds plantation, and died not many years afterwards. 7B From the Lee Family files of Mrs. H. M. Dixon was a letter from Mrs.Marjie Lee (J.P.) Holbrook of Orlando, FL , dated Nov. 12, 1958, in which she questioned the statement that John Lee was the son of Captain Thomas Lee, and the father of Godfrey, Lewis, Needham, Lovard, John, Sarah and Winnifred Lee, due to the record showing Lewis Lee with birth date of 1780 and John his father with a birth date of 1763 which would make John only seventeen years of age when Lewis was born in 1780. Mrs. Holbrook being a descendent of Lovard Lee, and she stated that a member of Captain Thomas Lee's family had documentary proof that Captain Thomas Lee was not the farther of John. In another letter dated July 12, 1963, Mrs. Holbrook had been in touch with several descendants of the Lee's named in this sketch but still believed that John Lee must have been born some time before 1760. Jon Lee had seven children-five boys and two girls; by name Godfrey, Lovard, Lewis, Needham, and John; and Sarah and Winnie.
