Leay Genealogy From:lindsay@discover.wright.edu> My mother's maiden name is Lay (a spelling variation of Leay), and your line's migration pattern to North America is very similar to our family oral history. I am hopeful that you can provide some general information on the migration of Leays from Scotland to Ireland to North America. According to my late grandfather, his surname was an anglicized and simplified version of the name, and his ancestors came to North America from Ireland. One of his cousins also believes ("has heard") his family was of "Scotch Irish" descent. I am familiar with the Scottish surname MacLeay (and its various spelling variations), and have tracked my mother's line from Alabama back to the late 18th century in East Tennessee, but there it disappears into what was then a frontier, with low literacy and little-to-no official record keeping. Lay/Leay/MacLeay/MacLay, etc, entries - I would greatly appreciate any insight you can provide into the general issue of Leay immigrants from Northern Ireland to North America. Any info I can share related to the origins of Leays in Scotland (mainly the entry in Black's "Surnames of Scotland" is at your disposal, as well. Thanks Lee Fuell Please post connections per this surname (or variant) first per Subject line format: LEAY, _____ -1800s- IRELAND > USA or generally per Subject: LEAY, firstname & key YEAR & LOCATION/country < fill in actual data mailto:LEE-L@rootsweb.com ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ spell address exactly this way!!! with explicit detail in body of message, please - thanks CHANGE a Subject line to reply per above format if prior post failed :) P.S. I would like help in finding the Parents of Hannah H. Lee born 16 Sep 1816 in Hampshire Co., VA. She married there in 1838 to Robert Poland. In 1644 they moved to Jefferson Co., IA in 1844. They had nine children, but only three survived to be adults. Hannah's mother was Margaret ( ??? ) LEE and she was living with her daughter per the 1850 Census and was 68 years old. There were other Lee families in the Jefferson Co., IA area but not sure if they are related. Any help would greatly appreciated. Donald
>A mystery occurs in the Jonathan Lee family: One daughter named Sarah Jane >Lee was born February 7, 1832, in Botetourt County, VA; A second daughter is >listed in the 1850/60 census named Mary Elizabeth ("Betsy") Lee who, it >appears, was ALSO born in 1832. Can anyone explain? Sure. I live in a neighborhood with tons of children and I see children born ten and eleven months apart all the time (terribly hard on the mom, though!). Mary Elizabeth could have been born in December or she could be a twin. Also, she could be a cousin that Sarah's family took in for a time. Or she could have been just visiting when the census was taken (she was18 for the first census and 28 for the second). mailto:bearden1@gte.net (that's a # one) _____________________________________________________ Researching southern surnames: Bearden (TN>GA>Jefferson Co., AL; Marshall Co.>Jefferson Co., AL), Berryhill (GA>AL), Byars (VA>NC>SC>AL), Caffee (TN>AL), Darling, Davis (VA>NC>GA> SC>GA>AL>MS>AL; LA), Duprey (AL), Goode (VA>KY>AL; VA>NC>AL), Hogan (TN>AL), Langford (NC), Leatham, Lee (NC>GA>AL), Lewis (MS>AL), Lion (NC), Lowrey/Lowry (Ireland>VA>TN>AL), Phelps (TN), Pratt (NC>TN>AL), Ramsden (AL), Riley (AL), Shaffield (Alcase Loraine>DC>GA>AL), Stedham/Steadman (NC>AL), Taylor (TN>AL), Thomas (AL), Watkins (Wales>VA>NC>TN>AL), Wilson (MS), Wood (AL). _____________________________________________________

Hello to All, I've subscribed to the Lee list to help out a friend who doesn't have internet access. While it's probably a long shot.....I told her it was worth a try. My friend has been searching for the Lee Family Bible for the last 10 years. She has contacted ANY and ALL family members who might have it, with no luck. This was a family heirloom with listings back to the 1700's. This is the only information she knows...... " I'm searching for the Lee Family Bible.....last known to have been in the possession of Thomas Kary Lee in the late 1950's in Seminole, (Gaines County), Texas. Some names listed in this bible would be: Zacarie B. Lee and Josiah B. Lee born in the late 1700's. Other names in the bible are: Zeretha Roberts, Onstott, James F. Lee, and Tom & Poke Hall. (Born around Hamilton Co., Texas." If anyone knows of this bible....please email me at xeno40@airmail.net I will forward the information to her. Sincerely, Alicia Brown
