I am searching for information on Jesse Lee. He was born in NC ca 1775-1778. He was married to Catherine (unknown) also born in NC. The children that I know about are William G. Lee born in NC ca 1818. Stanford Lee born in NC ca 1825. Annis born NC ca 1808. John born TN ca 1829. All of these Lee's show up in the 1850 and 1860 census of Muhlenberg Co. KY. Jesse died in Muhlenberg Co Ky in 1861. His son William G.Lee married Martha Jane Foster in Muhlenberg Co. in 1842. She was born in NC the daughter of Richard and Lucy Foster. Haven't posted in a while, lots of new folks though. I am descended from the Virginia Lightfoots, and we are supposed to be intermarried into the Lee family of Virginia. i.e. Francis Lightfoot Lee. Anyone know the connection?
This is a long shot...I am looking for an A.O. LEE who sent a postcard to my g-grandmother, JOHANNA STENSRUD WANG, in the early 1900's. The greeting on the postcard is "My dear brother's sister" and states that Mr. LEE is on a "stock farm" in Minnesota, halfway between Fairfax and Franklin, but 1/2 mile closer to Fairfax. It is my understanding that LEE was a version of the Norwegian name Lien or Lein. As my g-grandfather was born in Vang, Norway and given the name JOHAN CHRISTOPERSEN VANG, we are unsure as to who Mr. Lee might be? Johan was illegitimate and as far as anyone knows never met his father...but could Mr. Lee be his half brother? The greeting "My dear brother's sister" could have been meant to read "my dear brother's wife". If anyone can help I would greatly apprecaite hearing from you. I just hope that my decendants aren't left with the confusion I am facing! Thanks Marilyn Siemering ==== LEE Mailing List ==== 5 We need sources, please - can you help? All- ANALYSIS OF JOHN LEE FAMILY of Maryland and South Carolina Having read various conflicting papers on this family, I have come to the following point of view on the descendancy of John Lee who brought his family to SC from Maryland in 1751 and who settled on Wateree Creek, Craven Co., SC.. For identification sake, John above is John1 and his sons, Francis and John are Francis2 and John2, and the son of John2 is John3.. John1 was described in Nov 1752 as "very old." His situation was so severe that he could not represent himself in his petition for a land grant before the Council in Charles Town, SC. He was represented by his son, Francis2. As a result John1 was granted 50 acres on Wateree Cr., Craven Co., SC Concurrently, John2 petitioned for land (200 acres)., presumably, it included the 9 acres he cleared earlier to establish a home. In his petition John2 identifies himself as a native of Maryland It is quite logical to place John1 as from there. But nowhere does it say that John1 was a native. In the 1758 will of Thomas Lee of Northampton, Lancaster VA,, he names his brother, John Lee, as his executor, but the record shows that John cannot serve as he is in SC (1759). It is the strong possibility that this John is John1. If so, then John1 would be from VA and be a Lee descendant in the Cobbs Hall line which connects to Richard, the progenitor of the Lees of VA. Further Thomas, the father of John1 Lee, married Elizabeth Keene of Maryland which would provide a reason for John1 to be in MD before he came to SC. The sons of John1 were Francis2 who represented John1 before the Council in Charles Town, SC in 1752 and John2. who made his own petition Both had to be adults at the time. A John married Margaret Howard Greenberry in 1746 in Harford Co., MD. What this suggests is that that John2. married Margaret Howard, daughter of Nicholas Greenberry and wife, Ann. John2 states that he had a wife and a child in his 1752 petition in SC. It was this marriage that produced Greenberry Lee, b. c1748 who was probably the child mentioned in the petition of John2. Since the 1786 Fairfield Co., SC will of John2 mentions wife, Mary, she would have to be a second wife. Among the children mentioned is John3. Greenberry, the son of John2, is not mentioned in the 1786 will of John2, because Greenberry had died two years earlier and John2 had settled 500 acres of GA land on his son's widow, Elizabeth Few, in 1784. It was this John2 who is identified as a RW soldier on a memorial stone at the Catholic Presbyterian Church in Chester Co., SC. John2 died in 1787. Assuming John2 was married in 1746 at least at the age of 20, then he would have been born c1726 or earlier and would have been at least age 61 at death in 1787. This brings us to John3 who was the oldest surviving son of John2, though not the oldest child, and who was the executor of his father's estate. Calculation would estimate that John3 was born c1753/4 and would have been old enough to serve in the RW. Some children of John3 are known--Susannah (m. Cloud) and Elizabeth (m1. James Wrenn, m2. John Dixon). John3's wife is not known and there is no John4 cited. I'm looking for comment, pro or con, on this analysis. This is not true. Arthur LEE, the son of Richard LEE of Edgecomb County NC remained in NC until 1784 when he sold the property that he had been given from by his father in 1749. His son Simon also sold his property at the same time. Simon shows up in the 1790 SC census. Arthur's brother Timothy inherited land on Contenenty Creek in Dobbs County NC(later Duplin) and was on the land until he went to SC in 1772 with his son Needham, LAzuras and others. Your information comes from "Happy Heritage" which is just about all fiction. Timothy and his sons appear to have settled in MArion County. others who were closely related, were in Williamsburgh District and Sumter. There was a David and he might be a son of Arthur. The name Arthur and Ferney come through that line. I don't know of anyone who has been able to untangle the web. I believe that Arthur only had one son. There are many deed transactions between Arthur , Simon and Arthur,s nephew Charles. It is possible that Timothy could have had a son named Arthur. I am a direct Descendent of Sherwood who apparently was a brother of Needham of Williamsburgh District. Simon appeared on a deed as a witness, but a connection has not been documented. Before coming to SC both Timothy and Arthur lived close to other LEe relatives who seemed to move about the same time. There was a Moses that I have not been able to document, but found in Duplin as chain Carrier for a John LEE, the son of Joshua in 1761. Arthur was the grandson of John LEE of Nancemond, VA. Greeting All, Any help on the below family would be greatly appreciated. ==================================================== Lee Family Genealogy Date, Dec. 06, 1997 Lee and Westly (Wesley) Marriage - based on information on hand at above date - , Sources: History of Pulaski and Bleckley Counties (State of Alabama) page 762 Also recorded in book " E " page 17 (courthouse ?? ) Lee, John to Nancy Westley, March 04, 1841. By John Powell. O. M. G. Nancy Charlotte Wesley history is recorded in the Wesley Book by Tom & Betty White as having three brothers, Zachariah Edward, Robert Henry, Benjamin Mose, Even tho we don't know the father or mother of this Wesley line, these brothers and sister hold up through history to be true names and dates. As of the above date I, Charles Ray Lee, son of Charles Alvin Lee, son of William John Adam Julius Lee, son of John Lee and Nancy Charlotte Wesley bring up the question's concerning the complete name of John Lee. 1 Recorded in the Wesley Book as à John Lee 11, son of John Lee 1, 2 - Recorded in the Wesley Book as à lived in & went into c-army from Leon Alabama 3 - Ancestor Chart & military records by Richard Lee, à Andrew (first name of John) 4 - Ancestor Chart & Letter to Tom & Betty White from Sandra Wright à Edward (m-name) In July 1992 I was disabled with heart problems. So I began searching my family history something I have wanted to do for many years, My cousin had put together some history on our Lee family so I picked up where he left off. To my knowledge he received some of his information from the Tom & Betty White Wesley book, Also he sent for and received the military records of one Andrew John Lee from Pike county Alabama, There is also some Lee history recorded in the Hamilton county Texas history book about the Lee brothers and their trip from Pike county Alabama This article was wrote by the great granddaughter of Zachary Edward Lee, Mrs. Sandra Wright. Mrs. Sandra Wright wrote in a letter to Tom & Betty White that Zachary's Father's name was John Edward Lee and also stated she lost contact after he went into the war and served in Miss., Also she stated in a note on one of the genealogy sheets that Zachary's father died in Covington county Alabama, The Tom & Betty White Wesley book states that Nancy Charlotte Wesley Married John Lee Jr in Pulaski county Georgia on March 04, 1841, This record is in book "E" page 17, It states John Lee only ( no Jr,) In the 1840 census of Pulaski county there is a record of a John Sr. and a John Jr., One letter from a genealogy researcher suggest that this John Jr mite be the John that married Nancy Wesley if this is the bases for the "Jr" then most likely there is no "Jr" involved. Also on the 1840 census John Lee Jr shows to have a family with children, my great grandfather John Lee did not get married untill the year 1841 so this would have to be two different people. As for the name "Andrew" there was a Andrew John Lee from Pike county Alabama at this date I don't have anything to prove that My great grandfather name was Andrew. We know that Andrew John Lee was captured at Tilton Ga. On Oct. 08, 1864 and sent to prison in Chicago Ill. Where he died on Nov. 06, 1864. ( note ) war was over in April 1865 Five months after the death of Andrew John Lee. Records of Zachary Edward Lee, oldest son of John, says that Zachary spent the last six months of the war in the Chicago prison camp. If Zachary the son and Andrew the father was in prison at the same time there is no mention of it in family history anywhere to my knowledge. In the past I have put out genealogy sheets concerning Andrew John being husband Of Nancy Wesley and My Great grandfather, After much searching it looks possible That g-grandfather name was not Andrew, As of the above date the search begins for John Edward Lee, As with all genealogy one should not take anything for the truth until it is well documented. ================================================================== Charles R.
