    3. Greetings to All, Any help on the LEE family below would be very much appreciated. Three Lee Brothers: newspaper clipping found in the Hamilton County Texas Historical Book page 216 After walking thirty miles on crutches. Returning from the war between the states. The 1000 mile wagon trip from Pike County Alabama to Hamilton Texas must not have been too much of a challenge to Zachary Edward Lee. His two brothers Benjamin Moses Lee and Robert Elijah Lee and their families. The general unrest which covered the southland following the armistice in 1865 had its effect on the Lee brothers. Their father John Lee had died and the family had moved from their home in Covington County Alabama to Pike County Alabama. Zachary and Benjamin Moses had fought for the Confederacy in the 5th Alabama battalion infantry and Zachary had been wounded and taking prisoner at the battle of Chickamauga in Tennessee. He was held in the federal prison at Chicago Illinois and was presumed dead by his family. Robert did not serve since he was only 8 when 20 year old Zachary and 18 year old Benjamin enlisted in 1862. Six months after the close of the war Zachary returned home to Alabama walking the last 30 miles on crutches. Zachary married a childhood sweetheart Beady Robbins and their first two children Nancy and Elizabeth were born in Alabama. Benjamin Moses and his wife Margaret and daughter Mary. Late in 1870 loaded all of their belongings into wagons and began the 1000 mile trip to Hamilton Texas arriving in 1871. Within a few years Robert and his young bride known to us by her initials M. A. arrived in Hamilton . Their first child a daughter was born in 1879. The children born to Zachary and Beady Lee in Hamilton are Charlotte 1873 Temperance 1875 John 1877 Robert M. 1880 and Sue and Cleave. The children born to Benjamin and Margaret include Joseph 1871 John 1873 William 1875 and George 1878. All three brothers bought land and began farming in the community known as Shive and Robert Lee continued to farm and operated a vanity store in Hamilton. He died in 1941 at age 86 and is buried in Hamilton. He married a widow. Mrs. Alice McDaniel Harris and they had four children all born in Shive . Robert S. Lee born in 1893 and was a mail carrier for the post office in Hamilton until his death in 1972. His widow Mrs. R. S. Lee lives in Hamilton and is active in the Baptist Church. Jewel was born in 1894 followed by Cordia and Irving. In 1896 Zachary and Benjamin Moses moved their families to Brady Texas where many of the Lee descendants still live. Zachary died at 84 in 1925 . He and Beady who died in 1918 are buried in Cisco Eastland County Texas . They were active members in the Primitive Baptist Church. Benjamin died in 1922 and is buried at Brownwood Texas. ( Mrs. Clymer Wright Jr. Great Granddaughter of Zachary Lee )The above are the older brothers of William John Adam Julius Lee ( my grandfather) Charles R. 3. This is quite a posting. I'm having trouble making any links to LEEs of Georgia. My great, great grandfather, Thomas Palmer Lee was said to have been born in Screven County, GA, (was always told Thomasville, GA) joined the Civil War at a young age (younger than he should have, I believe) with his brother John Holcomb Lee. After the war they settled in Northern Florida (Umatilla). I have found record of their father's name to be William. Some records record his birth in GA and others say NC. One record indicated a spouse as, "Miss Barber". Does any of this sound like it might connect to any of you? Here is my information: 01/10/1998 Descendants of: William Lee 1 William Lee #144 m. Miss Barber #145 Death certificates of both John Holcomb Lee and Thomas Palmer Lee read that their father was born in Screven County, GA. Could be either GA or NC. 3. -- [ From: Helen Nichols Battleson * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- [021] Message was not delivered due to missing routing file. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Historic Bldgs. in Middlesex Co., VA 1650-1875, p. 51-53; Architecturally and historically, LANSDOWNE, in the center of the town, is one of Urbanna's, indeed of the area's, most interesting houses. In 1763 Ralph Wormeley III, owner of "Rosegill", sold "Lansdowne" to James Mills, a Scottish merchant in Urbanna. At Mill's death the estate passed to Robert beverley, Arthur LEE, its most illustrious inhabitant, purchased the property in 1791 from him, adding additional acreage later .. It was LEE, who named the plantation, "Lansdowne-on-the-Rappahannock" in honor of his friend, the Marquis of Shelbourne and Earl of Lansdowne, a proponent of the colonies cause. LEE served the Colonies Joint Commission to the Court of France and represented America's interests in Berlin as Commissioner to the Court of Prussia. After the Revolution, he represented the Commonwealth of Virginia in the Continental Congress from 1782 to 1785, was a member of the Commission to treat with the Indians, and was one of the three members of the Board of Treasury charged with implementation of the Ordinance of 1784. During this latter period he also served as a member of the Commission charged with revision of the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Arthur LEE is buried in a family cemetery on original "Lansdowne" property. Upon his untimely death in 1792, the estate passed to his brother, Richard Henry LEE, and next to his nephew, Francis Lightfoot LEE. Although today "Lansdowne" property is reduced from the original acreage to a spacious yard, it stands serenely, a charming reminder of Virginia's gracious past and a welcome refuge from the past. ==== LEE Mailing List ==== 1 Subject line format: SURNAME always first (or variant spelling): LEE/LEA, firstname & key YEAR & LOCATION/country < fill in actual data mailto:LEE-L@rootsweb.com ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ spell address exactly this way!!! ------- FORWARD, End of original message ------- -- Hewick@prodigy.com or Hewick@oasisonline.com - Helen Nichols Battleson, Hewick Plantation, POB 82, Urbanna, VA 23175 in Middlesex Co.,the 1678 home of Christopher Robinson, Esq. catering to genealogists & travelers to the Tidewater area, convenient to Gloucester, Matthews, Lancaster, Essex, K&Q, King Wm. 2. HELEN N BATTLESON
    3. -- [ From: Helen Nichols Battleson * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Dr. Arthur LEE to the LEE List; Wormeley-Lee-Montague House, p. 65; The Wormeley-Lee-Montague House has been in Urbanna almost as long as there has been a Town of Urbanna. The lot on which the building stands was conveyed by Christopher Robinson and James Reid, Trustees, to Ralph Wormeley by deed dated Aug. 4, 1747. It reflects the transfer of lots 74 & 75, which lots include the location of the house on the Towles Map of 1747. The transfer was made in "...consideration of 841 pounds of tobacco and cask...provided he build...within twelve months...." "This deed, together with an evaluation by experts from the APVA and the VA Landmarks Commission, is the best evidence that the house was built by 1748. In all probability it is the oldest frame structure in the town, and it is distinguished by a massive brick chimney on the east end. etc. Robert Beverley conveyed the property to Arthur LEE, a son of Thomas LEE of "Stratford", by deed in 1791. In the same deed LEE also acquired "Lansdowne" creating the possibility that he may have used the building for his office or for some other purpose associated with the operation of "Lansdowne", a plantation of hundreds of acres. Arthur LEE left a like estate in the property to his brother, Richard Henry LEE, who was the author of the Resolution (sic) for Independence and one of the Virginia signers of the Declaration of Independence. The remainder passed to Francis Lightfoot LEE, the great grandfather of Blair LEE, the present Governor of Maryland. (1978). The property passed out of the LEE family when it was deeded to Robert Beverly Spratt in 1803. -- Hewick@prodigy.com or Hewick@oasisonline.com - Helen Nichols Battleson, Hewick Plantation, POB 82, Urbanna, VA 23175 in Middlesex Co.,the 1678 home of Christopher Robinson, Esq. catering to genealogists & travelers to the Tidewater area, convenient to Gloucester, Matthews, Lancaster, Essex, K&Q, King Wm. Garen Lee Smith>> I have most of what is in the History of Stewart Co., GA History Volume II on Henry Lee and his family. Following are references from that book and/or Census information that I have in my data base: 1 Henry LEE ————————————————————————————————————————————— Birth: ca 1779, NC Death: 1860, Stewart Co., GA Burial: Henry Lee Cemetary, Stewart Co., GA Henry Lee, one of the most beloved, admired and respected men of the community, a deacon in a Baptist Church, Henry Lee, a cousin of "Light Horse" Harry Lee, the father of General Robert E. Lee, was similar in appearance and manner as the famed Civil War General; courtly, cultured, highly educated, deeply religious, quiet and modest. He was strongly patriotic as evidenced by his sons, grandsons and descendants, who to this date have fought and died in every War. Henry and wife, Lettie, came to Stewart Co. from their home in Wilkes Co., GA about 1835, settling in the southern part of the county in the 21st district on the Lumpkin-Georgetown Stage route. They had a large family of children, some of whom were married when they came to Stewart. He was faithful in church, honorable, missionary minded and financially well off. He died at the age of 81 and his wife died a few years later. Their home was a gathering place. They reared several orphan children. His second son, Henry B. Lee, built a large home which is still standing, which was used as a stage stop for change of horses, occasionally travelers slept overnight. A store was nearby which is still in use. Henry B. Lee's father settled a short distance away from w with it's well kept graves. Henry Lee, his wife, several children and grandchildren are probably buried there. Both Henry Lee and his wife were blind before death. The 1850 census shows Henry blind, and the 1860 census shows Letitia blind. In 1860, Letitia had $3600 cash and property valued at $13,200. Her daughter, Martha, was living with her. Henry made returns in 1841 for sons, Jessie, Nathan W. and John Adams (son-in- law). Records show he was discharged 1 Aug 1861, with no reasons given. No records have been found to indicate that he may have been discharged to allow him to re-enlist as a Surgeon, but his living grandsons remembered hearing him tell of his four years of service as an Army Surgeon, most of which time was spent stooping over operating tables. He was captured once by a negro sentry and escaped from Rock Island prison by knocking a negro sentry in the head and floating down the Mississippi River on a log. When the war ended, his first wife was dead and Mississippi was pretty badly torn up and impoverished. In 1867 he went to Louisiana, Franklin Parish, where he bought a large plantation and established a medical practice. In 1872 he married Josephine Gilbert of an old respected family. 3. -- [ From: Helen Nichols Battleson * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Historic Bldgs. in Middlesex Co., VA 1650-1875, p. 3. -- [ From: Helen Nichols Battleson * EMC.Ver #2.5.3 ] -- Dear Pamela, I saw your message on the Lee List, we live less than a mile from "Landsdowne", where Dr. Arthur LEE. a forebear of Robert E. LEE, lived and is buried here in Middlesex Co., VA. The LEE line that I am tracing is still in IA & IN, hopefully it will eventually get back to this area. He married Elizabeth and mentions in his will of March 8, 1709, his son Charles Lee b. 1683, daughters Mary Lee Jones and Ann Lee Gardner and Elizabeth Lee Mullins, grandsons Thomas Lee and Charles Lee and granddaughter, Elizabeth Mullins. Thomas LEE Sr. was the first known Lee of our line in America and had a small plantation of 300 acres when he died. His Lee family stayed in Middlesex Co., VA for the next 200 years and are listed in the Christ Church Parish Register. (See "The Lee Family of Middlesex Co., Va., Virginia Historical Magazine, Jan.1941, pg 75-78 for the full family line.) Any information about Thomas LEE would be helpful. So far, I have not connected him to the Cobbs Hall Lee line of Ricahrd Lee the immigrant. 2. Dianne Richards
    3. My 2nd great grandmother was Mary K. called Polly LEE born 17 Dec 1805 in VA. I know nothing of her parents or sibblings. Mary married 22 Sep 1824 in Sumner Co, TN. to William McADAMS. On 9 Jul 1821 in Sumner Co, TN a William LEE married Polly McADAMS this could be a brother of hers. That is unknown. One person told me years ago that her father was Harvey LEE and she was born in Rockingham, NC, I have never found any proof of this either way (for or against). In the 1850 and 1860 census it lists her place of birth as VA. Family tradition says she was a granddaughter of Richard Henry LEE, in 1800 and 1810 there are dozens of men named Richard Henry LEE, take your choice. I am in hopes there is someone else out there working on this family, and can name her parents and brothers and sisters.

    2. My husband and I are looking for any information about his ancestor, James Madison Leigh, born (according to census) in Virginia about 1810. He married in Maury Co TN about 1830 to Bernetta Anderson and they lived for a time in Lawrence Co TN (1850 census). They later were in Alabama and Bernetta was alone in Itawamba Co MS in 1860. Their children were: William, Lilburn, George Washington, Lucius, James, Charles and Martha. There was also a Lilburn Leigh in Tennessee in the same counties, also born in Virginia, two or three years older than James M. Leigh, who I think is his brother. Would appreciate any information you might have. Thanks! Ruby Magers magers@tsixroads.com RELATED LINES: Lytal, Forbus, Magers, Henderson. magers@tsixroads.com

    3. This may not be the Greenberry Lee you are asking about but thought you may want to check this. Greenberry Lee was the son of Lewis Lee and Jane (Triplett) Pope. He was b. 1820, Wilkerson Co., GA, d. 1853 buried in Lee Cemetery, Stewart Co., GA. A Greenberry Lee married Jane Corbitt about 1847 or 1848 and was killed in 1853.. To them were born a son in 1850, John Corbitt Lee, who died several years ago leaving a large estate. He was a prominent member, treasure, and deacon in the First Baptist Church of Augusta, and a member of the firm of Lee and Bothwell. His elevated sentiments of honor and virtue enabled him to live above the world in an elevated atmosphere of sobriety, integrity, and rectitude. These admirable traits of superior character, he has transmitted to his offsprings, who have intermarried into the best circles of pious and plutocratic residents of the city of Augusta. After the death of Greenberry Lee, a daughter, Anna was born. She married Sam Carswell of Wilkenson Co., GA. Above excerpt was taken from Reference below: Ref: History of Stewart County, GA, (2 Volumes), Volume II: Sara Robertson Dixon & A.H. Clark, Published by: A.H. Clark, P.O. Box 401 Waycross, GA 1975.
