    1. [LEE-L] (REVISED) ANALYSIS OF JOHN LEE FAMILY of MD and SC
    2. HFTHusma
    3. All- ANALYSIS OF JOHN LEE FAMILY of Maryland and South Carolina (REVISED) Having read various conflicting papers on this family, I have come to the following point of view on the descendancy of John Lee who brought his family to SC from Maryland in 1751 and who settled on Wateree/Rocky Creek, Craven Co., SC.. For identification sake, John above is John1 and his sons, Francis and John are Francis2 and John2, and the son of John2 is John3.. John1 was described in Nov 1752 as "very old." His situation was so severe that he could not represent himself in his petition for a land grant before the Council in Charles Town, SC. He was represented by his son, Francis2. As a result John1 was granted 50 acres on Wateree/Rocky Cr., Craven Co., SC Concurrently, John2 petitioned for land (200 acres)., presumably, it included the 9 acres he cleared earlier to establish a home. In his petition John2 identifies himself as a native of Maryland It is quite logical to place John1 as from there. But nowhere does it say that John1 was a native. In the 1758 will of Thomas Lee of Northampton, Lancaster VA,, he names his brother, John Lee, as his executor, but the record shows that John could not serve as he was in SC (1759). It is the strong possibility that this John is John1. If so, then John1 would be from VA and be a Lee descendant in the Cobbs Hall line which connects to Richard, the progenitor of the Lees of VA. Further Thomas, the father of John1 Lee, married Elizabeth Keene of Maryland which would provide a reason for John1 to be in MD before he came to SC. According to The Revolutionary Soldiers of Catholic Presbyterian Church, Chester County, South Carolina, p. 79, the sons of John1 were Francis2 who represented John1 before the Council in Charles Town, SC in 1752 and John2. who made his own petition Both had to be adults at the time. A John married Margaret Howard Greenberry in 1746 in Harford Co., MD. What this suggests is that that John2. married Margaret Howard, daughter of Gideon Howard and gdau of Nicholas Greenberry and wife, Ann. John2 states that he had a wife and a child in his 1752 petition in SC. It was the marriage of John2 and Margaret that produced Greenberry Lee, b. c1748 who was probably the child mentioned in the petition of John2. Since the 1786 Fairfield Co., SC will of John2 mentions wife, Mary, she would have to be a second wife. Among the children mentioned is John3. Greenberry, a son of John2, is not mentioned in the 1786 will of John2, because Greenberry had died two years earlier and John2 had settled 500 acres of GA land on his son's widow, Elizabeth Few, in 1784. It was this John2 who is identified as a RW soldier on a memorial stone at the Catholic Presbyterian Church in Chester Co., SC. John2 died in 1787. John2 was married in 1746 assuming at least at the age of 20, then he would have been born c1726 or earlier and would have been at least age 61 at death in 1787. This brings us to John3 who was the oldest surviving son of John2, though not the oldest child, and who was the executor of his father's estate. Calculation would estimate that John3 was born c1753/4 and would have been old enough to serve in the RW. Some children of John3 are known--Susannah (m. Cloud) and Elizabeth (m1. James Wrenn, m2. John Dixon). John3's wife is not known and there is no John4 cited. I'm looking for comment, pro or con, on this analysis. Best regards, Hugh <HFTHusma@aol.com>

    3. Dear LAY family member's: I am looking for the following person. This will hopefully be a breif summary of what we know about William Robert Lay William Robert was born Jan. 11, 1852 in Look out Mtn. or Hamilton Co., Tennessee. His parents are presumed to be either William, Silas, or Lewis R. Lay and Elizabeth Brown or Smith. Not much is known about them except that when Wiliam Robert was 5, Elizabeth died, so this would have been around 1857/58. His father soon remarried and between 1860 and 1865 passed away himself leaving William Robert to live with his Step-mother. She then remarried. I do not know either of the step-parent's names In about 1865/67 William Robert ran away from home and was presumed to go to Mississippi where he lived with a black family. Stories have said that one day he was helping some black men to make knives and was arrested. On his way to prison he escaped and ran to Texas where he was to be on the day that the outlaw Sam Bass was shot and killed in 1878. After this he had to come to Utah where he married Emily Phydilia Kenner sometime before 1882, because their first son was born in 1882. His name was also William Robert (Jr.) who married Eugenie Sudwicks and had four children. William (Sr.) and Emily had 13 children born between 1882 and 1906. William and Emily were sealed in the Manti Temple in 1888. My father was the 8th child, Amos Earl "doc", born 1894 who married Mae Avis and Jennie Estelle Walton. William Robert (Sr.) died in Taft Ca. in 1935. There is no real evidence that William Robert ever was born. The dates that we have are from church documents and government census records. In the census he mentions that he is born in Tennessee and the age of himself at the time of the census. On his marriage certifcate from when he and Emily were sealed in the temple he mentions that he was born on Jan. 11, 1852 and the place of his birth. In the IGI there is mention of Silas and Elizabeth married before 1851 in Memphis, Shelby Co., Tennessee. This record is false. It was placed there by Beth Anderson from Colorado. Almost all of the records she has given to the church are false. She has only listed 6 of the 13 children. All of their dates of birth are incorrect. Any help you could give will be greatly appreciated. Sorry that this has not turned out to be the short summary that I promised. But I wanted to give you as much information that I know. 3. ok guys some questions maybe just maybe you can help sort this out for my simple yet very confussed brain. according to the Indianan Marriage records of Orange Co 1816-1835 there is a Clement LEE married a Maria Welleby. Jan 12, 1824. I have her death as Sep, 11, 1854 Wayne co. IN. Same records show a Mariah LEE marring a Kane BRANEN 14 may 1829. then I have found from scatterd records and or others speculations a Mariah LEE b. 1812 Orange Co In, d 6, Aug 1840, Orange Co., In married a Cam R Brown with Cam being guardian of children. Then I have my Myra Ballard with sons Walter LEA and James LEA in DeKalb county along with younger children with the Ballard surname. Walter and James are listed as being born TN according to Walter's Military Pinssion records he was born in Bledsoe Co TN c 1830. In the Will of Myra Ballard she calls Walter and James her sons. No mention of husband in will. Will was dated Dec 30, 1872. Is this Myra LEE the daughter of William LEE and Ann Brook (maybe stepdaughter from earlier marriage of William) or is she someone that married a LEE then later the BALLARD . I have a photo of Walter from it he looks like he may have some Indian in him. Any Ideals as to who she is? Jerry Stephens JerryS4605@aol.com

    3. Trudy LEE (wife of Edward B. LEE) in the late 1960's and early 1970's had a good LEE thing going and helped many LEE researchers along the way. She collected every LEE record she could find and made what she called her Indexes from the data people sent her. If someone wrote her re: a LEE, say a WILLIAM, she would go through her entire collection, pick out all references to any WILLIAM, make a copy and sent it to the researcher. Then she'd add those pages to her Index and when she had 100 pages, would make a new 'book' out of them. Each booklet was chock full of LEE information--and she was very knowledgeable about the LEE surname. I understand there were at least 30 of these booklets. She finally got tired of it about 1975--and gave it up. I did contact and hear from her in abt 1990--she told me that she had donated all her LEE files to Newberry Library in Chicago. I have heard nothing further about her since 1990. She was researching a LEE family that I am also interested in--- Peter LEE b. abt 1770 in VA d. 1854 in White Co., IL m. Margaret EOFF Children: William, James, George, Peter jr., Jesse Franklin, John, Rebecca DANIELS, Reese--,maybe others. This family was in Bedford Co., TN, Shelby Co., IL, and White Co., IL Shirley

    1. [LEE-L] Lee Information - Notebooks
    2. Laura Irvin
    3. I have heard from Mary Harvey (thank you, Mary) that at least one copy of these notebooks is in the genealogy library in Salt Lake City. Linda Bloom says: > Based on what I know, she might have been researching Virginia, North > Carolina, and Tennessee areas for Jesse Lee and Judith Shelley, > Shelley Lee and Sarah Billups, and/or Augustus Billups (AB) Lee and > Nancy Anderson. Answers to inquiries received today: 1. I am not an historical society. (my poor choice of words-sorry) I found the indexes at "the" local historical society. I'm just an individual researching a Lee line in Indiana. Charles G. Lee of Maryland>Indiana, actually. I'm just trying to do a good deed. 2. The prices listed in the original post were hers, not mine. I have no right to sell copies of these. I am still hoping to find the person(s) who has the rights to these notebooks, and a copy of them, to see if they will give me permission to transcribe to the web. All help appreciated. Laura Irvin

    1. [LEE-L] Lee Information - Lookups
    2. Laura Irvin
    3. As a follow-on to my previous post - please do not ask for lookups. Apparently Mrs. Lee just entered information as she found it. There appears to be no rhyme or reason to the entries in the index. It would take days to answer requests for lookups. The 5 volumes of index together are approx. 125 pages, 8.5 x 11" typed. If I can find the holder of the notebooks, and they are not pursuing the sale of this information, I would like their permission put it on the web for everyone's benefit. Hence the reason for my earlier post. Thanks. Laura Irvin

    3. My local historical society has a typed binder full of Lee information. The title pages say "Leigh, Lee, Lea, Ley, Lay, Loy, Lees, Leas, Lease Index from the Notebooks of Mrs. Edward B. Lee 2116 Lomina Avenue Long Beach, Calif. 90815 Volume 1 December 1, 1969 Price $2.50" (mostly William Lee's) Volume II January 1, 1970 Price $1.75 (mostly John Lee's) Volume III July 1, 1970 Price $1.75 (mostly John Lee's) Volume IV August 1, 1970 Price $1.75 (mostly William Lee's) Volume V January 1, 1971 Price $2.80 (mostly Mary Lee's) My assumption is that Mrs. Lee compiled (for example) all the William Lee names she could find, perhaps in her own search for family ties? There is a wealth of Lee information, even in just the indexes. Apparently she put an identifying line behind the entries. A sample entry from the indexes reads: "Pg 861, John F Lee b. 1830, and John W D Lee b 1846, 1850 census, Anson Co., N.C. John Lee b. 1786 N.C., wife Celia, moved to Ala." Does anyone know of Mrs. Lee's whereabouts? Or if she is no longer living, who has the notebooks and the rights to them? Thanks for your help. 1. [LEE-L] Lee, John, Sr. of Fairfield Co., SC 1786 (Will)

    3. All- In this scenario three related John Lees are identified which I call elder, senior, and junior. The elder John is described as "very old" in 1752 and not able to personally make a petition for land (50a acres) upon which to build a mill. So his son, Francis, made the presentation and obtained the grant for his father. The same day the elder John's son, John (Sr.), made a petition for 200 acres of land and declared that he was a native of Maryland and had a wife and child. Two things strike me a significant. 1. That these sons would have to be of age (adult) in 1752 to make presentations of petitions before the Governor and Council of SC. This would mean that they came to SC in 1751 as adults, and that the son, John, was married. 2. That when the son, John, declared in his petition he was a native of Maryland he automatically placed his father as a former resident of Maryland. However, this statement did not establish that the father was a native of Maryland. Which permitted a search for his identity beyond the borders of Maryland. There were a number of Lees in Maryland who were natives (i.e., born) of Virginia. This is particularly true of the Lees of the Cobbs Hall line. Thomas Lee (Charles of Cobbs Hall, Richard the Immigrant) married Elizabeth Keene of MD. Their son, John Lee, was known to be in SC in 1759. In the will of John's brother, Thomas, Thomas appointed John executor, but the record shows that John could not serve as he was in SC. It is my contention that this John Lee is the elder John Lee as cited above. An examination of the 1746 marriage of John Lee in Maryland to Margaret Howard, daughter of Gideon Howard and granddaughter of Nicholas Greenberry, is in order. In Maryland the Greenberry name was quite prominent. John Lee and Margaret named a son, Greenberry Lee, who later during the Revolutionary War was a Colonel in the GA militia. Greenberry was born in Maryland about 1748 (he was 36 in 1784 when he died). Greenberry's widow, Elizabeth Few, was provided with 500 acres of land in 1786 by John Lee, Sr. who had acquired the land in 1771. Given the date of marriage of John to Margaret in 1746 and the birth of Greenberry c1748, it is logical to conclude that it was the elder John's son, John Lee, Sr., who married Margaret Howard and produced Greenberry Lee. In the will of John Lee, Sr. in 1786, he does not list Greenberry among his children because Greenberry has already died (1784) and John, Sr. had provided Greenberry's widow with 500 acres. There are some troubling aspects to this scenario. First, In the 1786 will of John Lee, Sr. he cites a wife, Mary, not Margaret. This could be explained by Margaret's death and a subsequent marriage to Mary, but so far there are no records to support the assertion. He does cite a son, John (Jr.). Second, a connection of the elder John Lee in SC to the John Lee who was placed in SC by the VA will of his brother, Thomas, has not been proven. Third, the identity of John Lee who married Margaret Howard has not been connected directly to a Lee family and, specifically, not to the Lees of Cobbs Hall. With all this said, there appears to be no facts that disprove the scenario. I would appreciate any thoughts you have, either pro or con. Best regards, Hugh <HFTHusma@aol.com>
