Honora Lee Wolfe expressed interest in Lees in New York state around 1800. Children of Captain Samuel Lee ( 1749-1829) of Salisbury, Connecticut settled in several states. Some in New York. Much has been researched, studied and written of this line of Lees. Dr. Charles Alfred Lee (1801-1872) moved to New York in 1827. One reference for the Lee family descending from John Lee of Farmington, Connecticut is John Lee of Farmington, Hartford Co., Conn., and his descendants, 1634-1897. Glenda - I was able to open the Andrea's document you sent. I'm not sure that I rec'd all of it. Can you lell me about how many pages were involved? Would you type out what little there is from Maryland and Virginia and North Carolina? In MD and NC a look for Francis Lee, brother of John Lee, could be helpful. There just might be the clue I'm seeking. Francis Lee settled in an area that was at the time (after 1751) part of NC that later became part of SC. (I think still on Rocky Creek upon which his father and brother were located in SC) I'll need some help from a Carolina history buff to explain the reason for the transition of the area from NC to SC and when. From the Andrea data you sent I'm sure that Mrs. Bettis' "Lees of Virginia" is on the right tract, but she missed a generation by consolidating the bios of 2 Johns (father and son). This, of course, needs to be corrected. The problem is in what forum. The basic problem is that the BETTIS document assumed that only one John Lee came from MD to SC in 1751. In fact a father, John, and his sons, John and Francis, came to SC. In Francis' 1752 presentation of his father's petition for 50 acres of land to establish a mill, Francis states that he is representing his father, John, who is "very old". On the same day Francis' brother, John Lee, represents himself in a petition for 200 acres. This later petition apparently has been read without the researchers knowledge or recognition of Francis' preceding petition. At least Mrs. Bettis does not reference it in her document. She cites Dr Robert L. Meriweather of the University of SC as a source. Neither recognized, as reported by Mrs. Bettis, that there were two Johns involved. An inconsistency is created in the Bettis story as she tries to establish that the John Lee, son to Thomas and Elizabeth (Keene) Lee, born in Lancaster Co., VA who was in SC by 1759 is the same as John whose petition for 200 acres of land in SC cites that he is a native of MD. The fact is that John of VA, son of Thomas, was the father of John of SC who claimed to be a native of MD . What is not explained is why John of VA was in MD at the birth of his son, John. in c1725. and why did they go to SC in 1751. 1. Richard Lee, emigrant 2. Charles Lee of Cobbs Hall 3. Thomas Lee of Lancaster Co., VA, m. Elizabeth Keene of MD 4. John Lee of VA, then SC by 1759 = 4. John Lee, then SC in 1751, very old. (his son born MD) 5. John Lee, native of MD, then SC in 1751 5. Francis Lee, in SC 1851, son of John In a document entitled "The Revolutionary Soldiers of Catholic Presbyterian Church, Chester County, South Carolina" by Mary Wylie Strange, Historian of the Catholic Memorial Association, the relationship of father and son, as I have presented, is confirmed. Do I make a point here? Best regards, Hugh
Jocelyn and anyone else searching Lees, I'm also interested in any and all info on Lees originating in New York in the late 1700s. Bob Flaws
Hi, I posted a message quite awhile ago, and thank those for their responses, however to date I havn't matched anything. I would like now to ask if anyone can review any information they may have on these two areas. 1st; Francis Lee may have come to Canada around 1812. He is living on the property of a Peter Milne in 1851. Peter came to Canada from New York State. Does anyone have information on migrations from New York to Canada in this time period. William Berczy was another individual bringing families in through New York. It is possible the mother and father came with their son Francis when he was just an infant. 2nd; Francis is also amongst the mennonite families from Pennsylvania. The family marries into some of them, namely the Barkey's, the Millers. Does anyone have information about immigrants from Pennsylvania up to Ontario, Canada. Francis Lee married Elizabeth Grainger around 1840 in Markham, Ontario, Canada. Francis' mother was Cruicy Russel Ligh. I think Russel is her maiden name. Francis' first son is named James Joseph, and other names are; William Francis, Aldolphus Homer, Russell, Marshall, Albert, Caroline Elizabeth, Julia, Ellen, Aurelia. I believe there was german in the family as they attended the Lutheran Church in Markham, and the wife Elizabeth Grainger is shown as German on one of the census records. If anyone can offer any suggestions or help at all, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks. Jocelyn Lee

The people you have listed are descendants of John Lee, Esq. (JLX) of Johnston Co. NC through his son Edward. Edward had a son Jeremiah b. 1770 who had the children you listed: Winifred, Nancy, Esther, Hardy, Nicholas and Isaac who was b. 1805. Isaac married in 1827 to Polly Fail and the only child I see in the database (not necessarily the only child, mind you) was Elizabeth H. Whether your Sarah Elizabeth is a child of Isaac I cannot say, but at least you know the lineage if you can prove her connection to this family. Perhaps someone else on the list can help? Good luck! You can view this database of JLX at Jim Williams Lee House web site: http://members.tripod.com/%7ELeeHouse/Jlx-fgs.txt Lorien Gunsallus
Hi fellow Lee researchers - Searching for any details on Sarah Elizabeth LEE, b. ca 1840, place unknown. My son-in-law was given a hand drawn family tree that showed Sarah, his Great Grandmother, to be the daughter of Isaac Alpha Lee, who was the son of Jeremiah Lee, b. ca 1700. The main problem is that all research to date indicates that Isaac had no children. That possibly bogus family tree showed Isaac's father, Jeremiah, as having eight children: Henry, Alexander, Winifred, Nancy, Esther, Hardy, Nicholas and Isaac Alpha. Do any of those names sound familiar? Sarah seems to be authentic, so we are trying to determine if Isaac was really childless, and if so, could Sarah Elizabeth possibly the daughter of one of Isaac's siblings, or in some other line altogether. Any help would be appreciated, and as always, I'll be most happy to share. John E. Price Ft. Worth, TX
I am interested in having contact with anyone researching Lees in Ontario, Canada or Lees originating from Desertmartin, Co. Derry Ireland. My mother's family were several generations in Simcoe, Co Ontario and I have traced much of the geneology there but have a few unanswered questions. There were many children and descendants of the original Lees that settled there from Ireland and I would also like to trace the ancestory further in Ireland. Cynthia (Lee) Hines-Sabol

All - I have a John Lee, Sr. who acquired 500 acres of land in 1771 in Richmond Co., GA and sold it to Elizabeth Few Lee, widow of Colonel Greenberry Lee , in 1786 for $5.00. Since Greenberry Lee died in 1784, the sale was actually a gift to her from her father-in-law. John, Sr wrote his will in Nov of 1786, but it made no reference to Greenberry since he had already made this gift to Elizabeth. John, Sr. died in 1787 in Fairfield Co., SC. John. Sr. had a son, John (Jr.) but very little is know of him in SC. Perhaps he went to GA as there were relatives there. Does anyone have information on Lees in Richmond Co., GA? Richmond Co., GA is just across the border from Edgefield Co., SC where the Lees may have spent some time. Best regards, Hugh
All - I am interested in locating Lee families in Chester, Fairfield, and Edgefield Districts of SC between 1751 and 1820. According to Caroline County Court Orders (1746-1754), p. 22, a William Lee was apprenticed to James Sherwood, master cooper, on March 13, 1747. The father of this William was also named William Lee, deceased. Does anyone know ANYTHING about either of these two William Lees?? James Thompson(Townes) LEIGH was born 16 may 1812 in Virginia. Parents unknown. He married Mary COON 20 June 1834 in Butler county, Ohio. They had children: Nancy Ann (1836-1928), Amos Harrison (1839-?), Elizabeth J. (1841-1916) Sophia (1844-1844), Mary Sophia (1846-?), John Wesstley (1850-1851), George Bowers (1855-?), James Thompson (1859-1860). He lived in Ohio, Randolph county, Indiana, Bond county, Illinois, Coffey county, Kansas , and Carroll county, Missouri. Mary died in 1876 in Coffey county, Missouri and wasw buried in Coloma, Carroll county, Missouri. James then married Mariah Jane McCall on 9 Aug 1877. They had one child who died shortly after birth. James T. LEIGH died 26 Sep. 1886 in Carroll county, Missouri and is buried at Coloma. Would like to know where in Virginia he was born and who his parents were. Also any information on any of his children appreciated. I have documentation on Nancy Ann who married William FLEMING and Elizabeth J. who married a George W. BAYLESS but none of the others. Kay
