All- Seeking the parents and ancestors of Andrew Lee of Edgefield Co., SC whose will of 1795 names wife, Nancy, and sons, Garsham, John W., and Wilson. Also need data on son, John W. Lee. Please respond to HFTHusma@aol.com
My mother in law (Maw N Law) said that her mother was always proud to be kin to Robert E Lee - I have just started this line and have no proof either way. My maw-n-law has had a massive stroke and I care for her now (that is how I have the time to dig for those lost roots) and she can tell me nothing. Her grandmother was Queen Ann Lee whose parents were James Elias Lee and Martha Singleton. Elizabeth LEE's parents were John Lee and Sallie Bean. So she has a good bit of LEE blood in her. If anyone could give any clues on these Lee's I would dearly love it. She seems to enjoy when I tell her about any information I find - (she is about 60-80 percent cognizant) and besides which I seem to be getting addicted to this search! I'm very much interested in the family of William Lee, b. 1718 Shankill, Armagh, North Ireland, especially as my Lee's might be connected. I found the following on the son Frances who m. Jane Alexander in "Genealogical and Personal Memorial of Mercer Co., NJ. Francis Bazley Lee, ed., Lewis Publishing Co., NY, Chicago, 1907." The Lee Family Francis Lee, original emigrant and founder of the Port Elizabeth and Trenton branch of the family, was born in 1749. His birthplace was in the "county of the town of Carrickfergus," an Antrim seaport, ten miles from Belfast. Carrickfergus is memorable in history as an ancient capital of Ireland, and the landing place of William III, 1690. Owing to the destruction of family papers there is no record of Francis Lee's ancestors, although tradition says that they were non-conformists of Midland English stock. Nothing is known of Francis Lee until November 21, 1770, when he married Jane Alexander, a school girl of good family. With her, it is said, he eloped to America. It is supposed that Francis Lee landed in Philadelphia. He soon began to acquire property. In 1774 he paid a lb. 4 tax in the Chestnut Ward of Philadelphia, and is named among warrantees for thirty acres of land in Northumberland county, Pa. and two lots in Sunbury, the then recently settled capital of that county. During the Revolutionary War Francis Lee prospered, and toward its close he dealt actively in Real Estate. In 1780 he purchased ....(it's a very long article and I've yet to copy it all). Anyway, our branch of the Lee's who were also in NJ, are listed as descended from Hosea Lee, b. 1655 England, d. 1713 Carrickfergus, Antrim, Northern Ireland. He m. Elizabeth Albet in 1675 in N. Ire. They had sons: William, Abraham, Elder, Gershom and David Andrew Lee. All but Abraham came to America in 1714. Only descendants of Gershom Lee who m. Mary Drake (dau. of Capt. Andrew Drake and Hannah FitzRandolph) are yet known. It would seem that there might be a connection between these Lee's. I'd appreciate any information that might connect them. I would like to share information with researchers of the William and Margaret McKan Lee family. William was born in 1718 in Shankill, Armagh, North Ireland; he married Margaret McKan there. Their children were: (1) John b ca 1742; (2) William b ca 1745 d 1803 and married first Susannah Chaffings and then Sarah McMullin (2) Sarah (3) Frances b 1749 married Jane Alexander. I am especially interested in the William and Susannah Chaffings Lee family.Susannah was born in 1757 in Orange Co., NC. They married ca 1770 and had four children: (1) William b ca 1772 (2) Frances b ca 1774; Samuel Chaffing b 1775 and Isaac b 1776. Susnnah died leaving William with the small children. Researchers disagree on the death of the first children in early childhood. Regardless, William was not able to care for the children and adopted the out. Samuel went with a Puritan couple and they move to Illinois. Isaac went with a Baptist couple and they moved first to Greene Co., TN and then Tuscaloosa Co., AL. Most of the descendants of Samuel Chaffing became Morman and one, Edward Lee became President of the LDS church in the 1940-50s. Isaac lived in Greene Co., TN and there he met and married Elizabeth Pruitt. They moved to Tuscaloosa Co., AL and raised a number of children who were: (1) William Pruitt b 1807 m Susanah Hill (2) John H. b 1808 m Agnes Mann Jenkins, (3) Catherine Ann b 1811 m John Jacob Samuel, (4) Missouri Ann b 1814 m Reubin Robison, (5) Hazy Ann b 1816, Louise b 1818 m Wm. Hi Everyone! I thought maybe someone could help me, although this may be futile. I have been trying to make the connection from my "LEE" lines to those of Margaret LEA Houston (General Sam's wife). This has alway been a family legend, as well as, the "never-say-die" story of General Robert E. Lee. I think we're ALL related to him...hehehe I have managed to piece together information regarding my relatives with very obscure names that coincide with those of Margaret LEA Houston's family. The names appear to be family names that aren't your typical John, Elizabeth, William. Although we definitely have our share of those, too! I know that the spelling of "LEE" is different between the 2 families, but it has been my experience that this sometimes occurred even between Father and Sons. Here are the naming coincidences. I have documented sources in all cases that include deed records, census records, marriage records etc...So, I think my facts are accurate. Although, you know there is always room for misinterpretation: ----------------------COLUMBUS W. LEE/LEA---------- Columbus W. LEE - my GG-Uncle b. 1848 in Tusc. Al youngest son to Thomas (b. 1799, Ga) and Elizabeth Binion LEE (my GGG-Grandparents). Columbus W. LEA - b. ca 1800 Margaret LEA Houston's 1st cousin from Perry Co., Al and State Senator in Alabama. He was the son of Green Lea and Peggy Moffett. I have a recorded deed showing that my GGG-Grandfather Thomas Lee bought/sold slaves from Columus W. LEA of Perry Co., Al in 1850. Why would Thomas name his youngest son for someone that he simply had business associations with? ----------------ELVIRA LEE/LEA---------------------- Elvira Lee - b. 1828 in Tusc. Al was the oldest daughter to my GGG-Uncle Lewis LEE. Lewis LEE b. 1796, Ga was Thomas LEE (above) older brother. Elvira married Dr. Francis B. Appling in Al. Elvira Lea Hightower - b. 1817, Tn was the daughter to Eunice LEA. Margaret LEA's G-Aunt. Eunice LEA married Joshua Hightower in Caswell Co, NC in 1800 ---------------VARILLA LEE/LEA--------------------- Varilla Lee Appling - b. after 1850 was the daughter of Elvira Lee and Dr. Francis Appling as shown above. Varilla LEA Royston - it appears that this Varilla Lea COULD have been Margaret's sister. I don't have published proof on this, but found it on GENDEX. However, I do know that Temple LEA, Margaret's father, had custody of a "Robertson Royston" who married a Varilla LEA in 1817. Additionally, Margaret's older brother Vernal, married a lady named Mary Royston, who apparently died because he re-married a Catherine Davies. ------------RANSOM LEE/LEA-------------------- Now this one gets really fun...NOT! Ransom LEE - b. ca 1835 in Tusc., Al son of my GGG-Uncle Lewis Lee (above) was "in the army" in 1862 when Lewis died. (This is from Lewis' will) Ransom LEA - b. ca 1768 Margaret Lea's uncle, brother to Temple LEA.. Ransom LEE/LEA? - d. 1846 in Tusc., Al I have a recorded document stating the following: "Richards, Willis Administrator of Ransom Lee, deceased.... 14-Sept-1846" Willis Richards was married to Harriett LEE, older sister to Thomas and Lewis Lee above. That would make him my GGG-Uncle by marriage. The Ransom Lee referred to in the document could not have been Lewis' son...he was still alive in 1862, at the time of his father's death. Could this have been Margaret's Uncle? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------- I have been trying to piece this stuff together for over a year now...with no luck. As you can see the names and associations would lead one to think there is a connection between the families. There are also geographic links. Margaret Lea Houston came to Huntsville, Tx (Walker Co) not 10 miles from where my LEE's settled in 1853. Any help on these families, or just the names would be greatly appreciated! Looking for information regarding Levi Lee and Elizabeth Mann. Levi LEE, born about 1755 in Botetourt County, VA. Levi moved to Campbell County, Virginia before 1791, when he married Elizabeth MANN. I only know of one child to this union (that's not to say there weren't others, I just haven't found them!): Andrew LEE, who, with Levi, moved to Barren County, Kentucky shortly after 1815. He married Elizabeth ("Betsy") Gillock April 1815 in Campbell County, Virginia. They had seven children together: four boys and three girls. The names of the children were: Nathaniel Henderson Lee (b. Apr. 29, 1816 in Campbell County, VA) Cynthia Ann Lee (b. Dec. 12, 1821 in TN?) W. R. Lee (b. between 1821 and 1825) John M. Lee (b. between 1826 and 1830) Elizabeth Jane Lee (b. Nov. 10, 1827 in Monroe County, KY) George H. Lee (b. between 1830-1835) Sophia Alice Lee (b. Sept. 21, 1831 in Monroe County, KY). Cynthia, Elizabeth and Sophia all ended up in Texas (Cleburne, Johnson County as far as I can tell). I am willing to share information on this family. I have copies of letters regarding Elizabeth's family, biographical information on Nathaniel (he was a Methodist minister, very well respected) and other bits and pieces of stuff.
