If you have access to an LDS Family History Library, there are SEVERAL books, books on microfilm and other resources that you can order in from Salt Lake. Also, on the Ancestral File and IGI you will be able to find some information. I checked this out rather thoroughly (although I haven't been able to access many of the books on film) because OUR family story is the same as all those who are researching the LEE name: "My relative was related to General Robert E. Lee". Our LEE ancestor was purportedly his brother ... but so far I've not been able to prove that. I very much doubt it. I find Lee's in St. MAry's County as early as 1652. There was a Joshua and John there who appeared before the court. Also in 1639 there was a Richard LEE and his wife who arrived in ST. MAry's from VA and he died at the home of Thomas Gerrard. HAnnah Hewitt LEE, the wife of Hugh LEE of Northumberland married William Price and in 1663 sold her property in St MAry's which became the State House. When Hugh married Hannah he was of Chicacone and Maryland, so it is possible that it was his land. MAny people from Norfolk County, VA, Western Branch of the Elizabeth River went to Maryland. I have been working on several connections to MAryland, Accomake amd the Northern Neck. Also there was a James LEE in Charles County MAryland who was desd by 1674. He was in Accomack before going to Maryland with William Stone. I believe that he had two children, but don't know names. I find a Jacob LEE but don't know if there is a connection. Sarah LEE, wife of Sampson Waring and mother of Basil Waring was a sister to Francis LEE of Accomack who died around 1670. She was born in 1629. I don't know of their connection to other LEE's but believe it is possiblethat they might be the children of John and Eme LEigh who were in Accomack in 1643. Also there were LEE connections to Kent Island prior to 1635. Colonel Richard LEE also had sons and grandsons' in Maryland. It is possible that some LEE's came into early NC with some other's from Maryland. These people possibly had ties to MAryland and the Northern Neck of VA. Does anyone out there have genealogy information on the famous General Robert E LEE? I would be interested in knowing something about his family. Thank you for your time, Darolyn Mason
Hoping to make connection with any LEE families that have roots in Pennsylvania. In particular, we are looking for Nelson Robert LEE b 1859 in PA (county not yet determined). As with all good LEE tales, Nelson is purported related somehow to "HIM" (you know, Robert E. LEE) but I'm not counting on it. Nelson was b in PA, Lillie LONG was b in IL, Samuel Benjamin was b in MO, and they've been on the move ever since. I have information about the descendants of * Samuel Lee & Mary Hackney. I am also very interested in purchasing any books written about this line. This message is for the original sender of this message as well as any other Mail listers who fall into the same category ... It is unfortunate that there is a significant number of my mail messages going straight to my trash folder unread because they all come either with or as unsolicited attached files. I don't know where this problem originates, but several lists DO MAKE IT QUITE CLEAR that attachments should not be sent via the mailing lists. I don't think it my own program that is causing this because I receive 100's of messages a day without this problem, and I hope that I'm not missing out on a family connection because the message didn't get read. She is not my relation other than she married a Horton, and later a Terry. Both of those surnames are of my family. It was in a book on the Howell family of Long Island that I found this information and thought I would pass it on to you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sarah Lee the wife of Israel Horton and mother of Eunice Howell, was a daughter of the Rev. Joseph and Mary Allen Lee who were married 21 Aug. 1727 at Lyme, CT where Sarah was born 9 Aug 1733. There were at least 4 other ch: Joseph Jr. b. 1737/8 in Lyme; Jason who was a minister; Hester b. 1735 who married Elder Zadock Darrow and Samuel. The family of their mother Mary Allen lived in Montville, CT. The Rev. Joseph Lee was the third pastor of the church organized in 1728 at Orient, then called Oysterponds in Southold, L.I.; coming there after 1759 and remaining until 1775 when he returned to Lyme. "He was a quiet, meek, good bur infirm man, faithful in the vineyards at all times, dispensing the word of Life equal to his strength and ability" The Lee Genealogical Tables trace Joseph's family back for three generations. He was born 24 Nov 1705 in Lyme, son of John and Elizabeth Smith Lee. John's father and grandfather were both named Thomas. After Israel Horton died in 1774, Sarah his wife married Parshall Terry who had lost his wife in the Wyoming Massacre. It is related that the combined households numbered 22 members, so many of them children that a schoolmaster was hired to keep school in half of the family's double log house. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I would be interested in knowing more about the Wyoming massacre. I was not aware that my ancestor was killed in that. If you have information that you can pass on to me about it, I would appreciate it.
