    3. Harold, In search of Francis Ludwell Lee, I have traced a great number of the Lees of Va and have found Hannah Ludwell married to Thomas Lee (Son of Richard Lee and Lettice Corbin). Many of the children were given the Ludwell middle name. This branch of the Lee Of Va tree might prove the most fruitful for you -- Patrick A. 3. Adrienne: Although I am not researching your Leigh line, I couldn't help but notice you mentioned a birthplace of Campbell, Dunklin, MO for William Leigh about 1850. My husband's parents grew up in Campbell as did one or two generations before them. I don't know if you are aware, but Campbell did not exist until 1882. There was a small community, now extinct, called Four Mile which was just up the hill a mile or so from present day Campbell. Four Mile didn't survive since Campbell was founded at the railroad tracks. The rail service was a high side of the area for some time and Four Mile was just a little too far for people. I don't recall remembering any Leigh family around that area in the 1850's. However, I could be wrong. I have a history book of Campbell which was published in the early 1980's. If you have a little bit more information as to where around Campbell the Leigh family resided I might be able to help you out somehow. I know quite a few individuals in Campbell and can make a quick contact if need be. I descend from the marriage of a John LEE and Elizabeth SMITH of Giles County, TN in the early 1800's. I don't think that it is correct, even though the LDS has distributed information on this relationship. 2. PSmoot
    3. Hi! Don't know if this info will help, or not...but I have the following documentation: Data received from Sam Houston Memorial Museum, Huntsville, Tx. This data was compiled by Martha Lea and Dick Gardner, in 1979. Mrs. Martha Lea Gardner was accepted for membership in the National Society of Colonial Dames XVII Century, as a descendant of Col. William Lea (b. 1654)...and further has determined that the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution accepts the service of Lt. Major Lea, Sr. (b. 1742) as sufficient proof of eligibility for membership in that organization. The data that Mrs. Gardner compiled was from several different sources, her own research, Dr. Casey's book "The History of Amite County", Mrs. Edythe Whitley's material "Whitley's Genealogical Collection on the Lea Family", as well as direct descendant research. The material from Mrs. Gardner is as follows ( I am summarizing, except where noted. Mrs. Gardner provides a very detailed account that I will be happy to provide if needed.) William Lea b. 1654, New Kent Co., Va married Mary Green in 1675. William died 07-14-1703 from a fall off a horse on the Sabbath. Important dates: between the years of 1682 and 1692 acquired approximately 1700 acres that was in St. Stephens Parish, on the north side of Mattapony River, New Kent Co., Va (later became K&Q Co., Va.) In the year, 1699, had acquired with Benjamin Harrison, 3474 acres in K&Q Co., Va. (branch of the Mattapony Creek - he later purchased Harrison's part) 1691 - Lea became Burgess for New Kent Co., Va 8-12-1692 - Lea helped form new K&Q Co. and became Burgess. 07-15-1702 - Lea became first Judge of Admirality Court. Jan, 1701/1702 - Commander in Chief of Militia for K&Q Co., Va. 05-02-1705: from the "Virginia Land Patent" Book Vol 9 pp. 649 & 657" "virtually all of 6200 acres left to his eldest son, Capt. John Lea." "Madam Mary Lea, Valentine Ware, and William Haines (son's in laws), each granted 860 acres near William Lea ( the other brother)". The Children of William and Mary Green Lea are as follows: John Lea (1677 - 1729) married Ann Taylor (1684 - 1731) Daugher Lea b. ca 1679 married William Haines William Lea (1682 - 1784) married Frances Major Daugher Lea b. ca 1684 married William Valentine Ware There is extensive information on the children of John Lea and Ann Taylor, including dates and names of events in Caswell Co., NC. I will be happy to correspond, or furnish to the list, regarding the remaining information. Patty Smoot psmoot@lcc.net

    1. [LEE-L] Lea/Leigh/Lee Families of Va/Nc - Info
    2. RAG LADY
    3. Thank you, B. Rehling, for posting the info on the LDS film; it is now high on my priority list. Following is from book "Lea Families in Caswell & Person Counties North Carolina, and in Virginia before 1800" authored by Ben L Rose; published 1995 by Anundsen Publishing Co. I have found this book to be an excellent reference, not just author's opinions. If an opinion or conjecture, he makes that very clear, unlike many writing about the Lea/Leigh/Lee surname. By the way, I have not seen anything in any documents connecting the LAY surname to the early Lea/Leigh lines of VA/NC, but that certainly does not rule it out as there are many, many items I've not yet seen. One of Mr. Rose's firm contentions is the following (excerpted from his book, page 124-125): "It is unquestionably true that in early Virginia records, since the names of Lea and Leigh are pronounced the same, record keepers occasionally wrote one name when the other spelliing would have been correct. For example, in Amherst Co, Va there is recorded a bond given Dec 19, 1796 by Ferdinand Leigh for his marriage to Elizabeth Cash. The signature is clearly 'Ferdinand Leigh', but on the back of the bond the groom's name is spelled 'Lea' and elsewhere it is spelled 'Lee'. While clerks and other record keepers occasionally made such errors, there is absolutely no evidence that the two names were used interchangeably or that any son ever deliberately changed his name from Leigh to Lea (or vice versa) adopting a different spelling from that of his father." (underline is mine). Elsewhere in the book, Rose gives further reasons for his stance on this issue. He paticularly takes issue with author, Albert E Casey ("Amite County Mississippi 1699-1890) who states several times that "in early records Leigh and Lea were used somwhat interchangeably" and "Lea and Leigh were interchangeable spellings, and have been for five hundred years....." Mr. Rose says that Casey: 1) gives no reference to support his position offering no documented examples to show that this was true in colonial Virginia records and 2) that Casey's position was (and that of many more recent generations) taken to connect up the Leigh/Lea surname to the ancestry of General Robert E Lee. Rose feels that a great deal of misleading and bad information has resulted from those efforts. Rose writes of clear and distinct families of Leas & Leighs established in both Virginia and North Carolina and provides evidence that some of the Virginia Leas were also directly connected to the North Carolina lines (and vice versa); he establishes his case fairly well through record citations. I have absolutely no connection with Mr. Rose, but for anyone interested in purchasing this book, I do have an address for him. I purchased my copy at a genealogical history book fair and paid $30.00. With the permission of the listowner would be willing to send more excerpts to the list. Also will address the William Lea/Leigh b 1623 and House of Burgess issue in separate post as this is too long. Gloria (RAGLADY@aol.com)

    2. This is not really my line, but in looking for help on the line of John and Martha Lay of Caswell Co,NC, I am investigating Leas and Slades in that County..hoping to make a connection. LDS film 877532 includes the Article "Lea Family of Va., NC and Mississipi " by E.W. Dixon, and "Slade Family of Caswell County, NC," Slades and Leas intermarried. This article states that Lea and Leigh were used interchangeably, and since 1800 some lines have used Lee, some Leigh, some Lea, some Lay. There is a wonderful amount of information on William Lea, b.1623 who was of King and Queen Co. Va...probably had sons John ,Francis, William, and James. William b. 1623 was the son of a John Leigh..and his son John (Jr.) inherited the vast acreage of John, his grandfather. John (Jr) had sons Richard Leigh and Ferdinand. William b 1654 was President at one time of the House of Burgess m. Mary Green., served in the House of Burgess until his death, when he was replaced by William Bird, April 20, 1704. Reportedly died when he fell off a horse..after "drinking on the Sabbath" I did not yet make the connection to Caswell Co.. so much of this film unread..Excellent Film, by the DAR. ..B. 3. Sally If this is your line, would very much like to exchange information with you as it is my line of Lea's which later connect into my Sargent lines. Also is the book you cited available? I have "Lea Families in Caswell & Person Counties North Carolina, and in Virginia Before 1800"; author Ben Rose. Lots of info, but sometimes raises more questions than gives answers. Wm & Mary (Green) Lea had a son, William b 1682 (St. Stephens Parish, Va) who married (bef 1715) Francis Major (King & Queen Co, VA) producing a daughter, Sarah Lea b. 1715 (St Stephens Parish) (plus other children I'm sure) Sarah Lea married William Sargeant/Sargent b abt 1715 New Kent, Va. producing Stephen Bryant Sargent, which is my line. There were also at least 5 other children in this line; have some info on several. Please drop me a note. Gloria (Sargent) Lambert (RAGLADY@aol.com)

    1. [LEE-L] LEE, William; 1787; Rockingham Co, VA
    2. Vern
    3. Good Day, Fellow Researchers - For the past year I've tried, in bits and pieces, to gather and make sense of the surviving records of the Lee families of Rockingham Co, VA, in the late 1700's. I have some pieces; I can't get the sense. Perhaps one of you can help. In 1774 Zachariah Lee and Zepheniah Lee served in the militia company from Augusta Co that marched to Point Pleasant under Capt. William Nalle. In 1775 Felix Gilbert submitted a list of tithables which included the names of William Lee, Zepheniah Lee, Zachariah Lee, William Lee Jr, and Boler Lee. In 1776 Theodocia Lee married James Maiden, Revolutionary War Soldier. In 1781 Zachariah Lee married Jean (Jane) Right (Wright, Bright). >From 1782 until 1798, Boler Lee, William Lee Sr, William Lee Jr, Zepheniah Lee, and Zachariah Lee appear off and on in the property tax records of the county. After 1787 the two Williams are no longer listed. After 1792, Zepheniah is no longer listed. In 1793 Zachariah moved his family to Botetourt Co, VA. And after 1798 Boler (Bolen, Bole, Bo) Lee is no longer listed. In November 1786 Mary Lee, Nathan Lee, and Milley Lee are ordered by the court to be bound out by the overseer of the poor. In April 1787 Mille Lee was bound to Phillip Moyer. In 1789 Mary Lee, orphan, married Bowlin Curtis (Custice). My problem is simple: How (if at all) were these people related to one another? Does ANYONE have any evidence to link any of these people to one another? If so, PLEASE contact me. Vern vstinson@ctaz.com
