Hi-In reply to John Lee Melbourne. My William Lee was born in Cornwall in 1831 and moved to Jersey sometime before 1871. The family were in Jersey until the 1891 census and then I've lost them. I can find no trace of them in the UK 1901 census so I assumed (?) that they were still in Jersey in 1901. Regards Len Newcombe.
Dennis: Thank you very much. Your message gave me one or two new items. I have documentation for a good bit of the material which I can send if you wish. I am researching my great grandfather's family history. His name Milton (Mitt) Washington Lee b. Dec 8, 1870 in Simpson County Mississippi. He expired Jan 16, 1945. Mitt's parents were slaves of Milton Chester Beauregard Lee, Esq., and wife Fannie Lou in Simpson County (Skiffer Community). Their names Daniel (Dan) Webster Lee and Harriet. Daniel was born in 1808 in NC. His parents were also born in NC, but I don't have any other information. Stories passed down through the years boasted that Master Beau was a descendant of General Robert E. Lee, but this has not been confirmed. Mitt's siblings from Daniel's (Dan's) first marriage were Mary and Preston. Daniel's (Dan) second wife was Mariah Hubbard. They had three boys Willie, John and William. Mitt married Mattie Payne b. Mar 1877 of Simpson County Mississippi in 1891. They had 11 children Obed, Chellie, Dan, Hugh, Ransom, Onus, Rachel, Mattie, Magdalene, Ellison and Gird. Mitt's second wife Gertrude Mangum b. May 12, 1888 of Simpson County Mississippi. They had 2 children Maudie, Rosa Bena. Any links? Or suggestions on how to pinpoint the NC connections? Thanks so much! Robin

would like to reply to Leonard Newcombe re his Lee family from Jersey. My ggrandfather John (Harcourt) Lee supposedly born 1861/1821 according to London census. The Jersey Heritage Trust, St Helier have tracked down a John Lee born in 1808 & a William Lee born 1810, to a father Malcolm, that checks with the marriage of John Lee's second marriage to a Laura Mason, in John was a professor of music. John Lee married a Charlotte Maria Percival I do not not know when & where at the moment. My grandfather Thomas George Percy Lee was born in 1840 in Gloucester Terrace Bayswater London, he came to Australia in c 1863, John was a widower at the 1861 census, another son John Harcourt Lee was born c 1842, he became a London solicitor & died in 1897. I would welcome any feed back, John Lee, Melbourne

John, anyone info re: William Samuel Lee b 1830, England....travelled to the California Gold Rush at 18, ( circa 1848) then lived in Ohio before travelling to Canada ( British North America ) in 1867 - present day Alberta - site of Pincher Creek. Included in the Rangeman Book - owned 10,000 acres of land. Horses, cattle. Lots of local newspaper stories of him, but no information re place of birth, family etc. described by locals as a gentleman...hmmmm on another note: found this plaque on the net...thought it might be interesting to someone..regards jcs http://www.waynecook.com/achatham-kent.html PLAQUE #5 Location: Civic Square Park, Wallaceburg JAMES PARIS LEE 1831 - 1904 One of the foremost 19th century arms inventors, Lee was born in Scotland. In 1836 his family came to Canada and settled at Galt. Lee was trained in his father's profession of watchmaker and jeweller, before moving to Wisconsin about 1858, where he began his career as an inventor. His greatest contribution to firearms design was made in 1878 when he completed the development of the "box magazine". Tradition holds that this occurred at Wallaceburg while Lee was visiting his brother John, a local foundry owner. The magazine was first incorporated in his U.S. Navy rifle of 1879. Eight years later his rifle was adopted by the British Army and, with modifications, it became, in 1895, the Lee-Enfield, which remained a standard British weapon for over sixty years. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Erected by the Ontario Heritage Foundation, Ministry of Culture and Recreation At 9:05 am -0500 29/6/04, John Philip Adams wrote: >I'll send it to you later today.
