James Lee, Sr. made his will in Frederick Co., Md. under date of 17 March 1756 wherein he names his wife as Mary; his children as: Rachel Lea, John Lee, James Lee, Robert Lee, MARY WAFORD, ANNE HUGHS, Sarah Grant, Margaret Ludger (Seager), Elizabeth Willis, Martha Thresher, Eleanor Betterton and Rebecca Littlefield. She is part of the James LEE family I just mentioned in my message. Maybe they moved on. A. G. TERRY and Sarah went to Denton Co., TX abt. 1881. That's one of my 3 LEE / LEA lines. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Another is William LEA, b. abt. 1714, poss. England, d.1814 in Person Co., NC and married Frances ___. On p. 7 of the pamphlet, Mrs. GRAVES has a section called JAMES LEA and WILLIAM LEA in VIRGINIA: "The earliest records in Virginia of our JAMES and WILLIAM LEA, that are know to me, appear in the Spotsylvania County records: 'On Motion of WILLIAM LEA Orphan of JOHN LEA Deced to have Liberty to Choose ZACHARY TAYLOR his Guardian is granted, the said TAYLOR having Entered bond with THOMAS CHEW Gent his Security & acknowledged the same in Court as the Law directs.' [Spotsylvania County, VA, Order Book 2, p. 89, October 7, 1731] 'That WILLIAM LEA was fourteen years or older is indicated by his being allowed to choose his own guardian, and the fact that the Court appointed a guardian for his brother, JAMES LEA, indicates that JAMES LEA was less than fourteen years old. "On page 86, Spotsylvania Co., VA Order Book 2, os the statement that ANN LEA, Relict of the said JOHN, had intermarried with THOMAS CREATHERS, and was since deceased. "The proof that JAMES LEA and WILLIAM LEA, the subjects of this article, were the orphan sons of JOHN LEA and ANN LEA, both deceased by 1731, lies in the transfer of 100 acres in Spotsylvania County, Virginia, from THOMAS CRETHERS to WILLIAM LEA, a minor on October 5, 1731, and the subsequent sale of this property by WILLIAM LEA and wife, FRANCES, September, 1752, to THOMAS WHITE. "A situation had developed in the lives of this family, which is revealed by the following: 'On petition of RICHARD SHACKELFORD & CATHERINE his Wife, Extx of GEORGE PRIDDY, Late of King & Queen County, Deced, &c to have THOMAS CREATHERS attached to give an account and Security for the Estate of JOHN LEA Late of King and Queen County, Deced, he having intermarried with ANN LEA Relict of the said JOHN & removed the said LEA's Deced Estate out of the County of King & Queen into this, and is ging out of the Country &c the said CREATHERS appearing and having proved that he has paid & Satisfied two of the saidf LEA's Deced Orphans & that he was ready to give Security for the payments of the Third. It is therefore Ordered that the said petition be Dismist With Costs, and that the said CREATHERS pay the said SHACKELFORD &c the same, and it is Likewise Considered that the Said CREATHERS (charge) the said Costs against the said Orphans Estate. November the Second 1731. [Ibid., p. 91] "On October 4, 1731, an indenture was signed by THOMAS CRETHERS and ZACHARY TAYLOR, Guardian to WILLIAM LEA, covering "Deed of Lease for Land unto WILLIAM LEA and admitted to record at a Court held for Spotsylvania County, VA, on October 5, 1731, 100 acres. [Ibid., DB B, 1729-1734, pp. 227-31] "This instrument covered the 100 acres of land sold by said WILLIAM LEA and wife FRANCES on Sept. 1, 1752 to THOMAS WHITE of Spots. Co., VA. THis land can be identified as being the same by its descriptions, there being only minor variations. "The testimony of THOMAS CRETHERS, above cited, provides proof that there were at least three children of JOHN and ANN LEA. Some researchers have thought the wives of JOHN KEY and RICHARD SHACKELFORD were also children of JOHN and ANN LEA." More later, Bob http://members.aol.com/genny1/lea.html He came to America and Virginia about 1720 with his parents. Being over 14 years of age when they were orphaned by the death of their mother, they were allowed to choose their gurardian. At first he choose his step-father, Thomas CRETHERS. However, a month later, he changed his mind and choose Zachary TAYLOR, who was the grandfather of President Zachary TAYLOR. He moved to Orange Co., NC about 1752. His will was written abt. 1802. There is so much conflict in the parentage of this William LEA, I don't know who they really are. Does anyone know for sure? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The 3rd line is from James LEE, d. abt. 1764 in Frederick Co., MD, and Mary ___. Dau. Eleanor LEE m. Thomas BETTERTON in Frederick Co., MD abt. 1746 and went to Spartanburg Co., SC where Thomas d. abt. 1788. Their grandson, Harvey BETTERTON, b. 1809 in Spartanburg Co., SC married in 1828 in Lauderdale Co., AL to Nancy HENDRIX, b. 1811 in Spartanburg Co., SC who was great granddau. of the above mentioned William LEA and Frances ___, which seems almost too strange to be a coincidence to me. Harvey and Nancy also lived in Harden Co., TN, across the stateline since he was a river navigator, and then they went on to Barry Co., MO where they died. My line went on to Collin Co., TX. Hi everyone, Since I'm a new admin to you, let's do "new." July - the month the United States celebrates its independence. However, we wouldn't have anything if it weren't for our immigrants... our NEW citizens of America, the colonies, then the U.S. (quick progression intended here). Your challenge: Tell us about your Lee immigrants - whether they came to America or traveled to Australia - wherever. Your ancestor(s) must have left their country of origin and gone to another one - a NEW one. The time period is irrelevant, but please include it in your narrative. Do not give just names and dates please. TELL us about your people - none living, though. Send your challenge response to the family <[email protected]>. I'll be waiting to see if anyone picks up the gauntlet! :) Colleen

All, I am working on the LEE surname in NC, specifically, Johnston Co. Much has been written about John LEE (Esq.), d. 1766, and his descendants, but little on other LEEs in the area. One of the heroes of that area was Captain Thomas LEE (RW-NC). There are many assertions about him that are inconsistent. He is claimed as the son of John LEE (Esq.) who indeed had a son, Thomas. What we know of Captain Thomas LEE is that he died in Hawkins Co., TN in 1816 and at the time was married to a widow, Mary RAINS, who survived him. Recognized genealogists have addressed Captain Thomas LEE and seem to have concluded that the information available is not sufficient to make a conclusion. Nevertheless, the swirl of assertions continues without the needed proof to put this issue to rest. It may never be resolved. However, if it is to be resolved some very precise findings are necessary. One, Is the identity of Thomas LEE "of Ditchley" cited in the Samuel Griffin Bible in association with the death of Thomas' wife, Mary Griffin, in 1758. How was he related to Ditchley? What became of him? Two, is the identity of the children of Richard and Judith (Steptoe) LEE of Ditchley Hall, VA. Whether or not there was a son, Thomas, is the issue. Three, is the clear identity of Thomas, son of John LEE (Esq.), as heir and Thomas' subsequent whereabouts. What became of him? Four, is the marriages with associated children of Captain Thomas LEE (RW-NC). Who did he marry and when? I am in hopes that those interested in a resolution to this case would contribute what they know to be fact. This would start a process of affirming or denying these assertions. Best regards, Hugh
Marie: I found Elizabeth Blackman in a different place. There is a Jesse Lee b. 16 Mar 1768 in Johnson Co, NC. I have him marrying the Elizabeth "Betsy" Blackman you mention. This Jesse is the s/o David "Long David" Lee and Martha Blackman or Eldridge (per my data). This Jesse is almost 30 years younger than your Jesse and is almost contemporary with your Jesse's kids. And the ages of this Jesse and Betsy line up pretty well. Bear in mind that this data is suspect, too, and doesn't have to be right. I'll be glad to send you the data from this family if you'd like it. Dennis
Marie: 1) I do not have Joel Lee's spouse, but I have the date of birth as 10 Dec 1770. Looks like either figure could be right, given the sibs. 2) I don't have any evidence or indication that Jesse was married twice. The kids' dates of birth seem to be pretty continuous from 1770 to 1785 - one every year or two. But I only have 10 kids listed... 3) My John was born in the middle 1700's (before 1765) and died in 1814. 4) Are you sure about the Elizabeth "Betsy" Blackman? The birth and death dates of the two wives do not match with the kids, unless a divorce was involved. That was pretty rare in those days. Consider this: Jesse is b. in 1740. If he were to have a first wife, it'd be sometime after 1758 and before he marries Susannah Johnson in 1770. But Elizabeth Blackman wasn't born until 1767, per your info. So, it is unlikely he married her before Susannah. And Susannah died in 1840, per my data. This is well after all the 10 kids were born, and possibly after the ones I'm missing. If either the death date is wrong, or there was a divorce, I guess Jesse could have married Betsy AFTER Susannah, and probably after the last kid I have listed (Rosa) was born (1785). E.g. assume that Susanna dies in 1790 or so (not 1840), Jesse is only 50 and hooks up with a younger woman, Betsy, who is now 23... Maybe they have a few extra kids before Betsy dies in 1811... I've worked on this for years but never got past the N.C.area problem of Jesse's parents. Do you have the spouse of his son,Joel Lee Born: Dec. 10, 1779 (Son of Jesse and Susannah). I also did note the Ingram and Blackman names and wondered if they were siblings from the same family, cousins, or etc.I have most of the spouses for the children of Jesse who were married but no family info other that birth dates. Thank you for the suggestions and I will start looking with sincerity in these suggested areas. I have just dug out the family sheets. Seems Jesse was married twice; There was a total of 15/16 children between the two marriages. Was your JOHN born July 8, 1801 in Sampson Co, N.C.? Jesse's first marriage was to Elizabeth "Betsy" Blackman 1767-1811 and she was the daughter of Joseph Blackman...Marie Dennis Lee <[email protected]> wrote: Marie: It wouldn't surprise me to find that Jesse and my John Lee were brothers. Both were in the NC area at one time in their lives (mine was there in 1785/6, at least)and both ended up in SW MS / SE LA. And they were about the same age. But, that remains to be proved. What it does do is offer you perhaps an avenue for research. My John Lee was married to Elizabeth Fenton in the 1785/6 timeframe, and had land transactions in 1786 in Currituck Co, NC. The transactions list the couple as being "of Beaufort Co, NC", although Elizabeth was living in Currituck in 1785. You might try looking in those counties for your Jesse... Also, I have info on the children of Jesse - who they married, etc., but I suspect that you already have this. Note the Ingram and Blackman names of the spouses. Several other Lee families from NC married into the Ingram and Blackman families. Might mean something; might not. Marie: It wouldn't surprise me to find that Jesse and my John Lee were brothers. Hugh - Did you (and the list) receive the long set of comments I made on these people? My servers were acting funny about the time I sent things out, and we were having to power up and down because of thunderstorms around here - so I don't know if it made it out or not. Regardless, I have some (very suspect) data on most of those guys. I'll be glad to resend. Dennis, Thank you for the quick and surprising reply.
