I am looking for information on the ancestors of a Richard Lee who married a Nancy Dodd in 1789 in Orange County, Virginia. Richard lived in Nelson County and his will, written in 1835, was probated in 1848. Nancy Dodd's father was John Dodd. She also had a sister Sarah Dodd who married Abner Lee and a brother, William Dodd who married Suzanna Lee. Richard's father may have been John Lee and a Milley (last name unknown) based on an Orange County will by John Lee in which this John names Milley as his wife and Richard Lee, Zachary Lee, Susanna, James, Betsy, William, Samuel, Lucy and Sarah as his children. He also mentions Abner Lee as husband of Sarah, and William Dodd as husband of Susan. There is also a will dated August 10, 1775 by Charles Lee in which he mentions his mother, Jenne Lee and a brother Jessee Lee. He also leaves a gun to Richard Lee, son of John Lee to be used by John Lee until Richard becomes of age. Others mentioned in this will are Betty Lee, John Lee again, William Lee, and Daniel Lee. Does anyone have any information on this Lee line? Richard and Nancy had a daughter, Susannah, who married into the Truslow family in Nelson County. Any help on the ancestors of Richard, both maternal and paternal lines would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.........Ann

If he was a confederate Vet in Texas after I believe 1884, he was eligible for a State Pension. Write or contact The State Archives, with the Library of Texas. http://www.tsl.state.tx.us/. I believe most of the southern states were of a similar character and the Vets were issued pensions, if they were indigent. If he is in Texas, they will make a research all files in the possession of the State of Texas for any info on your party to be researched, copy, send it to you and charge what I have considered to be an extremely nominal fee. If he died after 1903 contact the Bureau of Vital Statistics, in Austin. They have a site to get request forms, fees and other info. Good luck. PROOF SOURCES: 2 Bibles, tax records, land records, marriage licenses, tombstones, William G. Lee estate settlement, CSA & Union Military Service records, Union Civil War Pension Records & U.S. Census. NOTES: I first find "an" ABEL LEE on BARRY CO., MO. Land Certificate #2587 including a sworn statement indicating he was on the property by 1833. These witness statements were signed by GEORGE M. GIBSON & DANL LEE. Barry Co. was formed in 1835 so it would have actually still been Greene Co. at Abel's time of arrival. The certificate wasn't officially finished and posted until Aug. 6, 1839, & was designated BARRY CO. In 1834, GREENE CO., MO, ABEL & William G. were both taxed, living near one another. WILLIAM G. LEE was on the 1837 CARROLL CO., ARK. tax list and his oldest son, ABEL G. LEE, was born in ARK, Feb. 6, 1837. MELISSA SHELLEY, W.G.'s first wife, was born in AR & ABRAM & LETICIA SHELLEY are on 1835 CARROLL CO. AR Tax List. LETICIA WAGNON is in my Bible record being b. Feb. 9, 1817, which would seem to be Melissa's sister since she is only 1 year older. Next I find WILLIAM G. on BARRY CO., MO. Land Certificate #2586 with witness sworn statements indicating he was on that land since Feb. 22, 1838. These witnesses were DANIEL G. LEE & ROBERT LEE. W.G. is not on the 1838 Carroll Co., AR tax list. His next child, JOHN W. was born Apr. 22, 1839 in Barry Co. WILLIAM G. paid $50. on a receipt dated Mar. 25, 1840, on BARRY CO., MO. Land Certificate #5854. There is only one ABEL LEE on the 1840 BARRY CO., MO. Sugar Creek Township census and it indicates he & his wife would be in the correct age bracket. My Abel's wife, PHEBE, died Nov. 21, 1846. WILLIAM G. & Melissa's 4th child, WILLIAM C. was b. Dec. 10, 1841, LINN CO., MO., which is totally out of the area for William G. OLD ABEL's wife, Phebe, died Nov. 21, 1846, and he would have had plenty of time to remarry before he died on Dec. 25, 1859. WILLIAM G.'s 1st wife, MELISSA (SHELLEY) d. Aug. 9, 1846, and he marries 2nd wife, MRS. MARY A. ROBERTS, in HOPKINS CO., TX, Jul. 15, 1847, and is on the 1850 HUNT CO., TX census. There are 3 ABEL LEEs in the 1850 BARRY CO., MO census, one is only 25, one with a wife named Lucy & the other named Lucinda. That seems just too coincidental. My Abel would have been 67 yrs. old on Oct. 8, 1850; the 2 Abel's listed are 63 & 68. The Rev. Abel Lee that married, Lucinda Hill, for his wife #2, seems a likely match but the age is further off than the Abel listed as 68 years old with several children still at home. I'm beginning to think these 2 ABEL's are the same person and were listed twice on the 1850 census because he still had his original home & land and possibly was listed the 2nd time with the new wife, Lucinda, and her children at their house. I would welcome the list members' thoughts on this possibility. Do any of you know what happened to Lucinda (Hill) Lee after this census or possibly where she is buried? Does anyone know where her husband, Abel Lee was buried? I'm searching for tombstone information on ABEL LEE, PHEBE LEE & MELISSA (SHELLEY) LEE and hopefully an estate settlement, guardianship papers or a will probate that will list Abel's children in order to pin down which Abel is William G. Lee's father. It would really be nice to learn what W.G.'s middle name is that started with the letter "G". This WILLIAM G. and an ABEL were side by side in the above listed land documents and would seem to be father and son. I think this information would probably be in GREEN, BARRY and/or LAWRENCE CO., MO.
Several people already have him connected to that couple in the WorldConnect / Ancestry.com dbs. Hugh, Thank you so much! It has been quite a struggle with Moses. I am getting up in years now, and I do want to get past him while I can. I read each email that is posted to the Lee list, hoping someday, I will run across information that will help. My husband and I are planning a few trips this year and early next, so I may try to plan a trip where I can do some research around Giles County, Tennessee. Again, Thanks for taking the time to write. Hello All: I am still looking for my GGGrandfather's parents and siblings. Moses P. (Perkins) Lee, he was born July 22, 1818 in Giles County, Tennessee and died December 06, 1897 in Grayson County, Texas. He moved at an early age to Monroe County, Mississippi, and married Alpha Omega Cain on December 23, 1847 in Aberdeen. I have his marriage license showing his place and date of birth as Pulaski, Giles County, Tennessee, and found him in the Washburn Cemetery in Grayson County, Texas, but can not find any information of his origins. (I'm beginning to think he came from nowhere!!) I've posted before, but to no avail. Thought there just might be someone out there with a Moses Lee in their files. Thanks, Audrey Lee Diener

Lorien...Will you check to see if this particular Lee is in any of the books? There are many Burrell Lee's and surely my Burrell is part of the family, but I don't know who his parents were. One of his wives was Mahala ? and the last one was Nancy Pate. He was born in Columbia, SC and was living in Chattahoochee/Muscogee Counties in 1850 & 1860. He was living in St. Clair County, AL in 1870 until his death. I was told his parents lived in Alabama and his sister was named Alsie and that she married a Speights...Martha
Many thanks, Lorien. Lee, Jr., co-compiler of the first two books, passed away a couple of years ago. About 8 years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting him and having him tour me all over Madisonville TN and surrounding areas, cemeteries, gravesites (some way back in the woods where it would be hard to find them again), etc. He was extraordinarily kind to me and he will be missed by the genealogical community. He took a lot of information with him in spite of the wealth of knowledge documented in his books. Lorien (Lee) Gunsallus Desc. of John Lee, Esq. through Capt. Thomas Lee of Hawkins Co.
