    3. Hi Nora, I am of the Georgia Lees and curious about which Lee lines you are researching. Yes, we also have had stories handed down about being related to General Robert E. Lee...however, I have been unable to find a connection. It is possible there is a "distant" connection, perhaps, back in England, but nothing substantial at this point. 3. Hi, Darcy, The information I have on Frederick Lee who married Ruth Culp in South Carolina states that he died in Chilton County, Alabama on April 1, 1873. I have about 105 pages on his descendants. Mainly I have information on his daughters, Eliza Ruth Lee who married Charles C. Nix and Rhoda Ann Lee who married Andrew M. Caton in Bibb County, Alabama. Here is the census I have on Frederick and Ruth. 2. Go to VA on the usgenweb.com site and then the county of Westmorland. There is a lot of material there on the Lees of VA (Robt. E. Lee) and also use Google and it will take you to some sites that is mostly about the Lee family. Unfortunately, most people think they are kin to REL but most people are not! There were many Lee families in VA and many in NC. I am searching 2 lines of Lees and one of them is definitely not kin to them and one may be kin "from a distance" that has no meaning. I have a lot of Lee sites you may like to go over. However, I am on vacation and will be back home on Wed. I can send you those if you would like. Let me know. Good luck. Talk later. Nora

    1. Re: [LEE] quality of sources
    2. There's a wonderful book called Genealogical Evidence by Neal Stevenson -- I think it's must reading for anyone doing genealogical research. You might also check websites like ancestry.com, genealogy.com, or cyndislist.com -- I think they have sections you can click into that have how-to stuff, and might have something on judging evidence. To some extent, judging evidence is common sense. If you have an official birth record, for instance, that's primary evidence, but if you have a birth date that was given to you by, say, another researcher, but without any sources, that's much more questionable -- good researchers give sources. Census records, giving age at a certain time of year, would be better than sourceless material and are sometimes all you'll ever find, but census records aren't always accurate regarding age, so are not as good as an official birth record. But none of it is carved in stone -- even official records can be wrong, or different official records can conflict with each other. Stevenson says the best evidence of a birth date is testimony of the mother, because she was there when it happened and is, unless somehow impaired, the very best source. And the date of the source is all important. If you ask a mother when her child was born a year after it happened, she's likely to have it exactly right, but if you ask her 80 years later, it's possible that time and/or health may have fuzzed her memory. Or if someone in 1950 wrote down the date of something that happened in 1940, that may suggest personal knowledge of the event and would tend to be better evidence than someone in 1950 writing down something that happened in 1740 -- the latter would require additional source/sources to have any validity. It's like that. But if you can find the Stevenson book, it will answer all your questions. Good luck! Marilyn

    1. Re: [LEE] Robt. E. LEE Cousin?-MO-TX
    2. Larry and Elaine Blackman
    3. My suggestions would be to try to find relatives who could tell you more about the family, especially Tennie's siblings. Get birth cert., death cert., or obits wherever possible. Try to find them on the 1900 census in either MO or TX. You might even have to try AR or OK. Most libraries are now online and have the primary level of Ancestry.com that has the censuses for the various years where you might be able to easily find them in a search. Forget about legends about being related to Robert E. LEE or anyone else and just go with what you know. Any other connections will fall into place later, but I think every LEE family has that tradition, and most do have a Robert E. Lee in the family, it seems. 2. Darcy Howard
    3. Greetings, We are new to this list and began our genealogy search as a Boy Scout genealogy merit badge project. Our family is a group of farmers that we can track pretty well from 1860 in Mississippi as they moved into NE Arkansas, but haven't been able to find much on the parents or siblings of Benjamin Franklin Lee. From oral family history, bibles, headstones, obituaries, vital records and census records we have learned this much. Perhaps it will help you and you can connect with us. Best regards, Darcy Lee Howard Mabelvale, AR John T. Lee was born in South Carolina about 1816. He married Harriet, who was born in Alabama about 1822.
