LEE researchers, Looking for the ancestry of this LEE family. There is a statement in a 1911 memoir by Thomas Jefferson YOUNGBLOOD that his maternal grandfather was John LEE who married Sarah BEAN in Edgefield Distr., SC. He thought that John's father was also John LEE who was a valued scout for Gen. Francis Marion during Revolutionary War. Need a cite. 3. Hugh, This John & Margaret Lee don't fit the dates I have, but yet Prince Frederick is where David Lee was born and baptised. If John & Margaret were married 1746 in Maryland is there two John & Margaret Lees, or did Boddie get it wrong, or what??? "History of Williamsburg", by William W. Boddie Excerpt From 1735 to 1737, a great many settlers came to the new township on Black River and practically every acre of land had been taken up by these settlers within a year after the township had been surveyed. Within the territory limits of what is now Williamsburg co., but outside of Williamsburg Township as surveyed in 1736, were a JOHN & MARGARET LEE. These people settled along Black River from the point where it turns abruptly Northward, just after entering Georgetown Co. From Williamsburg Co., and along the present Williamsburg-Georgetown Co., line to the Pee Dee River. This settlement was called Winyaw, and this was the first part of the present Co. of Williamsburg that was inhabited by white people. Some of these people lived there in 1710. They organized Prince Frederick's Church in 1713.

    3. Estelle I found this book in two out of town libraries several years ago. I first copied only the pages with my family interest and the complete Index. I was on a very active SC List sites and offered to check the Index and get info whenever I went to one of the libraries again. I had such a collection on pages that I eventually copied the whole book. I don't know that it is available. The book is THE REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIERS OF CATHOLIC PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH, CHESTER COUNTY, SOUTH CAROLINA, By Mary Wiley Strange, 1946. 1. Re: [LEE] John LEE, Edgefield Distr., SC bef 1800
    2. As Peg has pointed out, Sarah (Lee) GORDON, the daughter of John and Mary (Cassell) LEE, named a son, Greenberry GORDON. As it turns out another sister, Elizabeth, married William MARSHALL and they named a son, Greenberry. Having pursued this LEE family to find a Colonel Greenberry LEE connection has not been fruitful. John LEE's will was written after Colonel Greenberry LEE died (1786). There was no mention in the Will of Colonel Greenberry LEE or the Colonel's children. There are good indications that Colonel Greenberry's father was named John. 1) Just after Colonel Greenberry LEE died in late 1786 in Richmond Co., GA, his widow, Elizabeth (Few) LEE, rec'd for $5 some 500 acres of GA land from John LEE. 2) Colonel Greenberry LEE appears to have named his children (John, William, Mary) after the children's grand parents: John LEE, William FEW, and Mary (Wheeler) FEW. 3) there was a John LEE living in Wrightsboro, Richmond Co., GA at the time. At this time the John LEE in Wrightsboro has not been further identified. We do know at the time that Greenberry LEE rec'd a 100 acre GA land grant in 1773 that he identified himself as single from SC. A John LEE in 1772 had rec'd a GA land grant of 500 acres. This is the land that John transferred to Elizabeth (Few) LEE in 1786. It is a reasonable assumption that John and Greenberry are related. In that John had to have a large family to warrant a 500 acre grant, it can be assumed that he was older than Greenberry and possibly his father. There is another factor, seldom mentioned. Almost concurrent with Greenberry's grant of 100 acres in GA, was a GA grant to Francis LEE for 100 acres (the single person allotment). Subsequently, Francis gave up the grant and returned to NC. Because of the concurrency of Francis with John and Greenberry, he needs to be looked at as a possible member of the same LEE family. Oddly enough, in the hearings in Charleston, SC two John's (father/son) and son, Francis, (all LEEs) sought land at the same time. This family identified itself as from MD. Emma Lee BETTIS in her manuscript asserted that this LEE group was linked to John and Margaret (Howard) LEE who married in Harford Co., MD in 1746. I think this is a leap of faith, but it needs to be sorted out. The phenomenon of the two Greenberry grand children of John and Mary (Cassel) LEE may be a reflection of hero worship rather than family relationship. Until we find the Identity of John LEE of Wrightsboro, Richmond Co., GA we may never know for sure. 3. The will referenced here is contained in its entirety below and does show a Burrel as Peg showed in her book. I believe Sooky is a nickname for Susan or Susanah at the time this will was written. Just a reminder to all that I continue to seek the parents of one James B. / E. Lee b. ca 1804 and dd 1876 in Chester County where the line continues to this day. From census data, we know he lived in the Blackstock area of Chester County and family legend has him born in Edgefield county. I've not been able to tie him to this line or other early Lee lines in the area -- any and all leads appreciated. From Peg's post, and if this is the same line, we could have John, Abner, Ferdinand and James all as brothers? Wonder who this James is.....? 3. Elaine The two John Lee's who were granted land on Rocky Creek were father & son. Francis also was son of the older John Lee. There has been speculation by some researchers that the younger John Lee, who stated he was a native of Maryland, was the father of Greenberry Lee. This has been reinforced by the fact that John Lee's daughter, Sarah, who married Alexander Gordon, named a son Greenberry Gordon. In John Lee's will his wife is Mary. Research has shown that she was Mary Cassell. One researcher thinks that this John Lee was the one married to Margaret Howard amd that she was the first wife. Also, the JL mark on the tree of the 500 acres in GA claimed by a John Lee, next to Greenberry Lee, was identical to the mark that our John Lee used on documents. It was an unusual J & L. The same mark was used on the deed giving the land to Greenberry's widow. There is still a lot to be cleared up about parents of Greenberry Lee Peg Peggy Pike Gordon [email protected] ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elaine Campbell" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, March 02, 2005 4:52 PM Subject: Re: [LEE] Greenberry Lee's grandchildren > Subject: Re: [LEE] Greenberry Lee's grandchildren > > > Hugh, this is what I've always believed. 3. Martha I have a book on Chester Co, SC. This is possibly the parents of your Burrell Lee. Besides his siblingd, two of his uncles are mentioned There is a page that gives a portion of the will of a John Lee, made March 1831 mentions a wife, Sooky, "my six children, Thomas, Burrell, Annie Matilda, Patsy, Sarah and Carolina, the last two having received a legacy from my brother Abner Lee; my friend Jos. Carter, my brother, Ferdinand Lee." This will also mentions "Poll Spring." Book U, Page 286, Dec 28, 1822 records that Ferdinand Lee of Antange Co, AL, sold his brother James Lee his right and title to a "Negro slave by legacy from my father." (father's name not given) These Lee's were of the Broad Creek, in the western part of Chester Co, SC, not of Rocky Creek Lee's. Good luck in your research. 1. Samuel Lee - SC to Wayne County Mississippi
    2. Pat Nichols
    3. I am looking for Samuel Lee b abt 1775 and sons Jacob, Nathaniel, Samuel Jr, and Roberson. Samuel Sr purchased land in Wayne County Mississippi 3 Mar 1817 Jacob first appears on the Wayne County Tax Roll in 1824, Nathaniel in 1825, and Samuel Jr in 1828. Internet and Wayne County sources attribute at least two wives to Samuel, Sr. - Sharon Slay, and Patricia Overstreet West. Samuel Jr appears on the Clarke County, Mississippi, census for 1850. He married Clarinda Stokes. I have Samuel Jr, Clarinda, and children, Ann, John, George Newton, Sarah M, Arthur, and Elizabeth are all listed in the household. Taylor and George Newton moved to Bowie County, Texas, as did their parents. Does anyone have information on how these Lees connect? Any information greatly appreciated. Pat Nichols

    2. In a message dated 3/2/05 4:32:27 PM, [email protected] writes: << Thanks Hugh. I am interested in Greenberry as I believe he is connected to my David and John Lee somehow.>> ___________ Elaine, If you look at the GA property granted to John LEE in 1771 or 1772 you will see it was for five hundred acres. Since a single man, such as Greenberry LEE, could get 100 acres, John LEE must have had a fairly large family. 100 acres for the main male and 50 acres for each additional member of his family. John would have a family of himself, a wife, and 7 children. This is a rather large family so there is room for a number of male and female children. So your quest for Davis and John is not precluded. Incidentally, John LEE's 500 acres were transferred by John to Elizabeth (Few) LEE just after Greenberry's death in 1786 for $5. The significance of the $5 is unknown. What this action does is underwrite a relationship between John and Greenberry, probably father and son. Further the Greenberry LEE children (John, William, & Mary) could be named after their grand parents who were William FEW, Mary (Wheeler) FEW, and..... John LEE. People associated with Greenberry LEE in GA were from Johnston Co., NC. FEWs and ROGERS come to mind immediately. It is reasonable to look to the NC area for the LEEs. One might take it a step further and find that the FEWs originally came from Harford Co., MD. The plot thickens as there is a John LEE who married Margaret HOWARD in Harford Co., MD in 1746. It is hard to trace this LEE family, but two of Margaret's half brothers, ORRICKs, are found in GA. The suggestion is there, but unconfirmed, that all these people tie together.
