The stories are just that and have maybe a hint of truth to them, my great grand-father might have camped with the Chippewa one winter or something like that and maybe even shared a warm bed but nothing came of it, if it even happened. The hard thing is that my family both sides did some moving, as I suspect everyone else's in the US did otherwise they'd still be in some sleepy little village in Europe, languages change, nationalities merge, it all makes it hard to trace. It's interesting though, I found out things I didn't know, I never really wondered where the Jersey was that they named New Jersey after, until I discovered an ancestor was born on the island. A little more research and you have an idea of maybe why he left, it was right in the middle of the 100 years war between France and England.
