That was fast~ It sounds like that house is amazing-- this one is very nice but doesn't have so many bells and whistles. It has one archway that used to have pocket doors (we WILL be putting an appropriate pair in the empty spot), it has pine floors throughout (underneath layers of carpet, linoleum(s), etc.), 11 1/2 foot ceilings (many of them lowered, which we will undo, of course), 25 fully-rounded arched windows (unfortunately no stained glass), most of the original woodwork, and we also found in the attic stairwell and parlor bay window some original wallpaper that we will hopefully be able to have reproduced. The house had a cupola on top that we will also replace, and that will literally be the "crowning glory" of our project. Thank you for all of that information-- we wanted to create a family tree for the LeDucs that lived in the house and whoever else we could find information about. If you know of anyone who might have old photographs of the house or family that would be extremely helpful! We have one photo so far, which I put on the Facebook page. If you ever want to come visit us we'd be happy to give you a tour of your Great Great Grandfather's house! It is on the block right behind the mansion that Edward Rutledge lived in until he passed away, which is now the Cook-Rutledge Mansion museum (not to be confused with the massive gothic Rutledge Home like so many people here do!). Both the Cook-Rutledge Mansion and the Elzear LeDuc house are brick and probably the two best examples of Italianate architecture in the Chippewa Valley. Please don't hesitate to send me a message if you're ever planning a visit to Chippewa Falls and would like to see the house! George Elzear Leduc was my Great Great Grandfather. The 2nd Leduc daughter, Mary Jean Leduc, married Adelard Bergevin in about 1880 and their daughter, Marey Maude Bergevin, (My Grandmother) married Peter Plante in about 1910. Their only son, Leon H. Plante was my father. The Leducs, Bergevins, and Plantes all were French Canadians that followed the timber cutting industry from Montreal Canada to the United States. My grandparents were resdidents at the Rutledge Home in Chippewa Falls for many years. I am sure you know that that home was originally set up for all of the lumberjacks by a Mr. Rutlefage who, made his fortune in the logging industry and wanted to do somerthing for the people that made him successfull. It is my understanding that you have to have been born in Chippewa County to gain admittance and once in the home evrything is then paid for... at least it was when my grandparents lived there.. I do not have facebook but my children do and I will have them look up your posting.. Good luck on your restoration project. My wife and I restored a 115 year old home several years ago...It was a 5-year project. We completely redid all of the plumbing and electrical as well as replacing the lathe and plaster to bring the home back to its original floorplan. It had 11 foot ceilings and in some areas had up to 7 layers of wall paper. About 75% of the home had 1/4 sawen oak panels. There were 13 stained class windows and a dozen more with beveled glass. 6 10 feet pocket doors and 4 fireplaces... it was along remodel job and we lived there as we went along.. WE made 1 mistake .. we started upstairs and worked our way down... b y the time we reached the basement area we noticed that some of the walls were slightly sagging and we could not jackup the low areas becaes we would then crack the paster walls we had just repaired up stairs on the 1st, 2nd and 3rd floors... Please rememebr to get your bottom floor level first before you start your remodel job upstairs... Good luck on your project.. we will be sure to drive by and see the place when we visit Chippewa Falls... The Grandparents are buried there... My friend and I purchased a house in Chippewa Falls, WI this summer. The information we have on the house is that it was built in 1875 by Elzear and Eleanor LeDuc, and they had ten children: Wilfred, Ludger, Louis A., Adelard, Prosper, Edward (died at 15), Clarina, Mary Jane, Exilda, and Anna. There is more information and some pictures on a Facebook page I created to get information shared quickly: If you have or sign up for a Facebook account you can search: LeDuc House of Chippewa Falls . . . and find out most of what we know about the home. If you prefer not to have anything to do with Facebook, don't worry. Someday we'll have a website devoted to the restoration of the house that you won't need any kind of account to see. Anyway, any pictures, info, and/or info about people who to get in contact with would be EXTREMELY appreciated as we are trying to restore the house to as close to what we can find out about it. Thanks! Kyle Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The oldest one in my file is Pierre Leduc born about 1645 in France, then his son immigrated to "New France" later known as Canada. As the years went by and families grew my great grand father immigrated to the U.S.A. with his parents and siblings in about 1841. As they could not read or write English and the Census taker could not read or write French the spelling got changed to LaDuke. I see nothing retarded here, the same thing happened to many thousands of people that immigrated in that time period, from all parts of the world. My LeDuc family came from France and went to London in the 1700's. It is believed the name changed to Duke. Not because they were retards, but probably due to the desire to 'fit in' with the English. The French were not welcomed in England so many French people anglicized their names. I cannot believe you would write such an ignorant post to this board. May I suggest that you grow up, get yourself literate and start learning your history accurately Cheers Jocelyn Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: weekendinparis Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.leduc/536/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello Everyone... I have hit a brick wall and have been going round and round for the past year with no luck (ugh!). So, I thought I would try a different angle and see if someone on the message board might be able to help. I will try not to be too confusing... I will have to do a little history beforehand, though. I am sorry for the length but I wanted to make sure I put all the information out there that I could. The ancestor I am looking for is CHARLES MADOX and whom he may have married. Charles is the father of PELAGIE MADOX. ================== Part One..... Pelagie Madox married Jean Baptiste St. Francois 18 April 1803 at Detroit, L'Assomption de Sandwich de Windsor (Douin Records). She was JB's 2nd wife. The marriage record states that Pelagie was the "natural" daughter of Charles Madox and that Charles was a "Convert." I also know from Charles' burial record that he was a meat caterer/trader "at the post." Witnesses for the Groom: JEAN BAPTISTE LEDUC, DOMINIC LEDUC, Andre Peltier, Joseph Amable Bigras, Francis Champagne and Pierre Giroux. Witnesses for the Bride: Jean Baptiste Ouellette, Charles Ouellette, Alexander Ouellette, Alexis Delisle and Henry Blondin. ================== Part Two:..... Jean Baptiste St. Francois' 1st wife was Genevieve Cloutier, daughter of Zacharie Cloutier and Marie Josephe of the Sauteaux Nation. I do not know if they had any children before she died. Witnesses for the Groom: JEAN BAPTISTE LEDUC, Andre Peltier and Marie Josephe Peltier wife of Jean Baptiste Pare. Witnesses for the Bride: Charles Spinard (?), Andre Goupille, Claude Reaume and Jean Baptiste Pare. ================== Elisabeth Peltier was the Godmother of JB and Pelagie's son, Jean Baptiste St. Francois JEAN BAPTISTE LEDUC was the Godfather of JB and Pelagie's daughter, Pelagie St. Francois Jean Baptiste Proux was Godfather and Victoire Ouellette was the Godmother of JB and Pelagie's daughter, Louisa ================== JEAN BAPTISTE LEDUC was a witness to both of JB St. Francois' marriages. Were they related????? Or maybe just very good friends..... I am wondering if Charles being a "Convert" was married to an Indian woman and I have not a clue how to go about researching. Another question is where did he do his trading (he died about 1788)? Where would I find records for "traders?" Also, Pelagie is mentioned as the "natural" daughter of Charles so was her mother Indian??? I have read that a "natural child" is a child of an Indian. Again, I am lost and do not know where to begin researching. This is all new territory for me... Did Pelagie choose the witnesses to her marriage because they were family members? I don't know anything about how witnesses were chosen. Another thing to add to the confusion (sorry) is that all of the St. Francois family were killed on 2 Oct 1813 except for Pelagie (mother) and daughter Scholastique (my ancestor). According to Fr. Christian Denissen, "Genealogy of the French Families of the Detroit River Region 1701-1936," the family were "scalped by the Indians." I don't speak or read French so I had the burial records translated and nowhere does Fr. Gabriel Richard state they were "scalped." Does anyone know if there are more records out there that would indicate they were scalped????? The dates of their deaths are close to the day Tecumseh died (5 Oct 1813). They all lived in Monguagon (now Trenton) Michigan. I do not know if Pelagie remarried or where she went after her family's deaths. I could never find any records if she remarried. I have Scholastica in the Monroe, Michigan 1850 Census married and have had no trouble tracing her to me. Sorry for the lengthy and confusing post. I know I have lots of questions and like I said, I have hit a brick wall. Anything, and I mean anything, you can suggest would be wonderful to me. Thank you!!!
