    3. I've seen ditto marks in past censuses while indexing. However, in the 1940 Census they appear to be just a line in the field. What do y'all think? Joan in NC

    3. The line across the field has been on the batches of the 1940 U.S. Federal Census which I have done.   That must have been the usual indication for identical information.   Mary Scott
