Dear Nancy! That's a GOOD question! Who knows with the Belgian archives? Let's hope it's really not going to take too long as I too am disappointed not to have access to the images any more But we can always go back and order the microfilms as you have done. Allow me to direct you to The Belgian Researchers web page on Rootsweb. http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~inbr/index.html We have been working hard at finding Belgians on this continent especially but there are also links to already indexed Belgian registers - not indexed through FamilySearch indexing but the result of private individuals' past and current work - Also I would strongly encourage you to use the Yahoo groups listed in the "Links" as contact with local people might help you connect your patron with other researchers. Let me know what exactly you are looking for, maybe I'll have some more specific information for you. What you describe ordering sounds like "Population Registers". Those can be very helpful to work with as they follow individuals, grouped in families, over a ten year period. They should give you birthdates, places, occupations, death dates if the person dies within the time frame, where and when, whether they were married, to whom and when and where and even here they moved to. Same with emigration. Note too that the women are always listed under their maiden name. The Civil Registers will give you official copies of the birth, marriage and death records. It's always good to work with both. You ask where the Belgian Archives site is. If you use the Blog we started on http://thebelgianresearchers.blogspot.com/ we published an article on January 30, 2010 explaining how to use their site, though looking at it again, i see where I need to review it and update it. To do a search of their site, use: http://arch.arch.be/component/option,com_rab_archieven/Itemid,43/lang,en_GB/ they don't have an English version of the site so you may want to try yourself at which ever language you are better at: Dutch, French or German to understand the fields. (That's what I am going to do a review on so our English speaking researchers can know for sure what they are doing) You can always contact me privately. The purpose of The Belgian Researchers is to help people with Belgian roots find their roots. Let me know how we can be of service to your patron. We ordered a Belgium population register for the time period that is needed but I guess that those records only track movement in the population? Was there any sort of a census record taken in Belguim for the time period 1850-1950? He talked to someone in SLC and they steered him to film number 782912 stating that the Belgium Civil Registrations for the area Knesselare, Oost Vlaanderen, Belguim are online. When I went there, I only found some indexed records and they were mostly later records and NO original digital films. I found a link of known problems with a statement, "The images for the Belgium Civil Registration, 1795-1920, collection have been temporarily removed from the FamilySearch website to assist with the development plans of the Belgian National Archives' website. We apologize for the inconvenience." Is anyone in the know about this situation and what the Belgian National Archives' website is? The nonmember is not very computer literate so it is a struggle for him to even find the records in the catalog. I am hoping to help him after church tomorrow as he lives in the neighborhood with this collection. Thanks for any information if you are aware of what is going on. I do not have any Belgium lines myself. Sorry I missed a part of your question on census... yet answered it when telling you about Population Registers. That's what those are really, but better as they follow the families through out the 10y period, not just 1 day every 10y. The problem with the Population registers is that not all of them have been microfilmed. This web page explains them well: http://belgium.rootsweb.ancestry.com/src/bel/census/index.html Take care, Regine --- On Sat, 1/14/12, Regine Brindle <[email protected]> wrote: From: Regine Brindle <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [LDS-WC] Belgium Records To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, January 14, 2012, 9:56 AM Dear Nancy! Regine, Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions. What you said about the uproar is about what I thought might have happened. I forwarded your first email ONLY with the links to the nonmember, Ralph Van Deveire, who recently took out an email: [email protected] I suggested that he might contact you directly, I hope you do not mind, with questions that I have no clue how to answer. The email address I gave him for you was: [email protected] I see that is different than this one but I assume you use both? Thanks for your support.
