Shanna, PAF is the personal program I encourage new researchers to use to get them hooked. It is free and teaches them the disciplines of accurate work. Moving on to more can be easily discerned. But I think you are making some very valid points; we should always we aware of where our patrons are coming from and judge our advice suits that. As a ward consultant, Ihave found it can seem overwhelming to "newbies" to try and look at the plethora of individual software products out there. Starting with FamilySearch, in contrast, can be fairly easy once initial entry has been established. I have been successful in a few cases, sitting down one-to-one with a patron, talking about the most common free programs and actually downloading one on the spot for them to use. If they had previous familiarity with PAF, AncestralQuest has the closest-looking format and use (and a free basic version). a major problem here - PAF does not have any codes covering any announced/built Temples since 2000.
