Did you phone their hotline and talk to New Family Search Support?  Here is their number if you don't have it...1-866-406-1830 They were very helpful in removing a name someone else had merged into my family tree, that messed everything up as it was the first name on the list of merges and I could not unmerge it. Try calling if you haven't already.
