    2. Sometimes it is in the research that we learn to know and love our ancestors. Sometimes it is in the service being rendered at some point within the Temple walls. But it is a connecting process. While I've had some special experiences with people that I don't know and have just been handed at the temple, the most unique experiences that I've had were with family names. Why cheat ourselves by not trying to do our own family names? That said, I am grateful that there are Temple files available, because when I find a mother lode of names that I can't possibly get done in a reasonable time with the number of family I have as a convert that are Temple worthy, I am happy that there is a Temple file available to assist. If our ward doesn't have a Youth trip coming up for baptisms, I sometimes hand the baptisms in at the office for someone else to do, but take care of the rest myself. They've had to wait long enough for me to find them, without waiting for months for me to get it done personally or to find someone to do the work as well. I try to limit my personal "pending" somewhat...and sometimes it works, and sometimes, I have a big stack to work through. Our Temple allows us to give them two names for endowments when we take one of our names through. Usually we split evenly with my husband, but one week I was getting well caught up on the sisters in my file, but still had a huge stack of brothers, so I told my husband to hand in two extra men for my "extra two." One evening recently, all but two of the sisters on one of the sessions I was with had family file names. While I know that there are people waiting in the Temple Files, I like to see that many Family File names go through. It means that more of us are doing what we're supposed to be doing. If a youth group plans a temple visit that is not their annual temple assignment, then they must provide their own names. I deal with this all the time. My understanding is that the purpose of this rule is to keep the baptisms in balance with the other ordinances of the temple. Family files can be worked on as submitted by patrons, but the temple file ordinances need to stay somewhat in balance. I'll echo what Miles said. One problem with these temple trips is that the youth get the idea that the names just appear and the ordinances are the beginning and end of the work. With Utah families, it isn't so simple to suddenly produce over a 1000 names that legitimately need the work done. I have talked with our youth leaders numerous times to teach them that the research and identifying names comes first, THEN the temple trips can be planned. As you might expect, I haven't gotten very far with that. David, I don't envy you the position you are in. It's hard to feel like you might disappoint the youth, but it's also difficult to assure that the names you are given on short notice are sufficiently researched and truly ready to be submitted. I hope you are able to get the names you need, but even if you do, I would use this as a teaching moment for the youth leaders and help them understand the FULL process of performing ordinances for our ancestors. Use the statements of the prophets that tell us the research is a crucial part of this work, and set up some classes for teaching the youth and their leaders how to do that research. Once they get involved in it, they will have an appreciation of what is needed to do quality work. Temple trips begin to have much greater meaning when these kids put in the effort and sacrifice to identify their ancestors and thus "know" them when they head to the temple. 3. I certainly must echo the sentiments here. The youth leaders seem to have no Idea what it takes to get names for the kids to do baptisms for the dead. I Have supplied the names for our ward kids twice a year for the last 8 to 10 years As well as a stake baptism project. I usually keep at least 150 on hand because The youth leaders will call and say they are going "next week" and do I have names For them. I guess I have made it too easy; but I am grateful that the work gets Done--the big problem is getting the rest of the work done after the baptisms and Confirmations are done. I usually end up taking most of the cards back to the Temple to get the endowments done. True for many but not in my ward. They knew what was involved because they are also Temple workers, too! It is the math of the cards. I was asked to explain the logistics of getting that many in short notice next Sunday to the youths for 5 to 10 minutes. Jill Crandall is right on the mark, it's Utah temples with their requirements. Only Salt Lake Temple does not require the cards, can use Temple file to supply the names. Salt Lake Temple is my ward's primary Temple (requires 2 times per year per Temple President's assignments to the wards/stakes in the district to supply youths for baptisms) with additional Bountiful and Jordan River Temples occasionally.
