Sister Scott, I am an associate director at ORFHC. I received a call from Brother Russon about an email going out that would alert ALL registered consultants in the Ogden Temple district that they could now sign into and begin the training for nFS. Personally I have been on the system for some time however I received that email as well as many members of the staff on Thursday. I have had others either call or email me that they were also on the system. I agree. nFS is absolutely the best thing that could have happened to involve families who have been in the Church for generations. It was so awkward and cumbersome to exchange information before -- export and import GEDCOMs, then merge & combine duplicates in your own database and then people just got lost -- that if they were really tech-savvy, otherwise they'd give up much earlier. Now people can take control and even do some research if they feel like something does not look accurate. Good luck, Utah, and welcome aboard. Seems like that is the task before us. The UT areas will be coming on board soon and before you know it the world will be looking in and starting to use nFS. For the members of your ward that feel that their "genealogy" is done - have them approach this is picking up and making sure that everything is ship shape before the guests arrive. Once they get to work and start sprucing up the names on their family tree - and gaining experience examining the records on their recent/immediate relatives - combing and making sure that they are in good order.... then they'll be ready to tackle the next generation on back. They;'ll feel comfortable combining the "obvious" ones .... and feel cautious about combining the names that are less obvious .... "Mary ... born 1840 .... Ireland" ...... Then with everyone pitching in - combining and making sure the records are pulled together - the database will start to look pretty good. No, don't encourage them to start with their ancestors in the 1700s ... have them start with their parents and grandparents - so they can build experience and confidence. Help them move further back - with a family history advisor at their elbow. We can do this. Company is coming - they'll be here before you know it. Let's get everyone working on getting the house cleaned up. My hunch is that by taking this approach we can give our ward members a "task" a challenge that they can handle with confidence ... so that they will then learn how to do genealogical research to fill in and extend the data when they see the blank lines and missing people. On June 4, registered Family History Consultants in the Bountiful Temple district received an email saying they could now register for the new FamilySearch and to invite other consultants to do the same. It indicated that Priesthood leaders would receive release info at a later date. On June 9 Consultants working in the Bountiful Heights FHC, received an email from the FHC Director that June 16 would be the last date that Temple patrons could take Temple Ready disks to the Temple to have cards printed out. After that date they will accept FOR's only. Any one with Temple Ready disks will be referred to the FHC to have them converted to FOR's. Consultants received instructions on how to do the conversions. Sounds like we are very close to implementation in the Bountiful Temple District. I was recently told that the hoped for plan is to have all the remaining Utah and Idaho temples ROLLED OUT by the end of this month or next month at the latest. So, I would expect an accelerated emailing of consultants informing them they can start training. NOW .. if I could just get people in the wards in our stake and our stake moving on getting consultants called. So far, only one consultant in one ward in our stake has been called despite being informed each time a stake in Utah or Idaho is added that it's coming ... coming SOON and FAST to the wards and stakes. Sometimes you can't help but think of the parable of the bridesmaids when it comes to getting the wards and stakes moving on this. > From: jballing@relia.net > To: lds-ward-consultant@rootsweb.com > Date: Sat, 13 Jun 2009 13:33:25 -0600 > Subject: Re: [LDS-WC] Company's Coming ..... > > Sister Scott, > I am an associate director at ORFHC. So, I would expect an accelerated emailing of consultants informing them they can start training. That's not what we're hearing in Provo. I hope that's the case, but the BYU family history classes are gearing up for special arrangements for our students for fall semester. What we have to do is a major process, and nobody is saying that it won't be necessary. There are a number of things that we can't do until the roll-out is completed, and we can't do them for fall semester. That tells me that the full roll-out is not expected until well after September, in my opinion. I hope I'm wrong! Jill Crandell
