It has been a while that I have helped prepare someone to get their own ordinance work done in the Temple. This sister is going to get her ordinance work on June 30. She has a son who wishes to take his deceased brother's name to get his work done at the same time. What is the current procedures to take to make this all come together? Thanks, Susanne
What an exciting day for this sister and her son. After the sister has met with the bishop, she will be given a recommend for living ordinances. She should then call the temple and set up the time for her initiatory and endowment (plus sealing if applicable). Calling the temple is the first step towards receiving ordinances for a living person. The temple recorder or the office staff will make the appointment, mail out a letter with what the member needs to do or bring. Meanwhile, the sister or her son should use New FamilySearch and submit the deceased brother's name for ordinances. If the baptism and confirmation are already done, the initiatory and endowment ordinances will be cleared. (If he was not baptized or confirmed these ordinances need to be done too -- before the day that the sister goes to the temple for her own ordinances.) In our Detroit Temple, consultants have been asked to prepare a family group record for the family if there is a sealing which will occur. (The family group record is just used by the temple to generate their own records and doesn't become part of the official records of the temple.) All deceased individuals on the family group record have their information processed through New FamilySearch. A family ordinance request is created for these individuals. The ordinances can then begin for these deceased family members -- so that they are ready for the endowment session when the living sister/brother attends the temple for their own ordinances. If the sister is going to be sealed to her own parents that same day, she needs to have the individual ordinances completed for her mother and father before they can be sealed together. The temple's sealer will seal the parents together if all the other work is completed. Then the sister may be sealed to the parents. The sister needs to be sealed to her spouse for the deceased and/or living sons to be sealed to her. The best thing to do is telephone the temple and clarify what needs to be done. If the sister has questions and doesn't understand exactly what is needed or will happen, the consultant can telephone the temple recorder or the office staff to verify the procedures. Good luck!! Best wishes to the sister on her special day at the temple!!
