Hi all...I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about who to notify or what to do about an issue I have with the 1940 census...or if there is really nothing I can do about it. I found myself as a child in the 1940 census, but the last name is not there. My maiden name was Bachtell and my father's first name is Marlin. The 1940 census has him listed as (Last name) Marlin (First name) Marlin. In other words, he is listed as Marlin Marlin instead of Bachtell, Marlin. No one will EVER be able to find us! Any ideas, anyone??? Eileen
Have patience... when your state is out with index, use feedback to add alternative name. Well, the good thing is -- you know exactly where to find yourself. :-) In any case, since the Census is wrong, the Index will be wrong, too. Indexing will not provide a way to fix fact errors -- indexing will "type as seen." Of course, at some point the information might be on a wiki, or on New FamilySearch, and then it can be edited. In the meantime, don't lose yourself. :-) -----Mensagem Original----- From: Eileen Wheeler Sent: Friday, April 20, 2012 2:35 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [LDS-WC] 1940 Census Hi all...I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about who to notify or what to do about an issue I have with the 1940 census...or if there is really nothing I can do about it. Eileen, If you use Ancestry.com, you can make the change there now as you would using the "Page Tools" menu item "View/Add Alternate Info". I have already made a change for my husband's grandfather using this tool. His grandfather is indexed as F Bardis Camper. The name was F Rawlins Camper. The "F" stands for Francis which he never used. I added the transcription error as a name change. I also changed the state that my mother-in-law was born in after checking with her to be sure that I was correct. FamilySearch is not allowing Alternate Information at present but when Dear Myrtle interview one of the key guests from FamilySearch recently on the RootsMagic Webinars regarding the 1940 US Federal Census, the guest was anticipating sometime early next year for that tool to be implemented into FamilySearch. It seems to me that the sooner the better but I do realize that they have a multitude of tasks to accomplish. As Jill Crandell has commented in the past, it would be good for all of us to keep a list of names we come across that need correcting. I have not done this unfortunately but I am going to go right now and develop a table in Word where I can list this type of correction. I will probably list the problem, the correction, where it needs to be corrected and where it has already been corrected. Something like that so that I can track it without having to redo or recheck things that are already completed. Nancy Scott PS If Jill has any comments about what might be good to list or how she has tracked it, I would be happy to hear them. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Eileen Wheeler Sent: Friday, April 20, 2012 01:36 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [LDS-WC] 1940 Census Hi all...I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about who to notify or what to do about an issue I have with the 1940 census...or if there is really nothing I can do about it.
