It has been explained to me that so few people in relative numbers of church membership are actively involved in family history that these collateral efforts were introduced to stimulate interest and collaboration and ultimately submission of names for the temple. Must switch to pedigree to correct parents. There's no way to mark as default like it is in nFS. So it does "move towards the goal for the accomplishment of temple work." Friends, just an idea re fan charts. Of course, they are not necessary. Those of us who have been researching our families can certainly get by without them. However, some of us are more graphically oriented than others. Perhaps I'm one of those, because I do appreciate fan charts. For years, I've enjoyed enclosing them in birthday cards for family members, especially the younger ones. I think fan charts do a good job of illustrating missing fields and it is my hope the missing parts will inspire someone to become inspired to help me fill in some blanks (so far it hasn't worked, but I continue to be hopeful. LOL LOL). Seriously, it makes for tidy enclosure and at least reminds the recipient that their family history actually exists. I think of it as planting seeds which I hope will someday bloom into an avid interest. I should add that none of my relatives are LDS -- I'm the only one, so I also look upon things like fan charts as missionary tools. It is my belief that Family History is one of our greatest missionary hooks to get folks interested.
