I too have reluctantly given up on PAF 5(Freezing problems with large databases). I LOVE that program. But, I have upgraded to AQ and Rootsmagic and am still figuring out which one I like better. I think many older users prefer PAF for it's simplicity. I did also, but really liked the fact that it was free. Most newer programs have free versions or free trials. I am encouraging all new and old family historians that I work with to upgrade if they haven't already. If upgrading is too difficult for people to come to terms with (and they want to quit)it may be time to introduce younger members of their families to family history research. They will undoubtedly have an easier time of using the new programs since they have grown up with computers. As for the rest of us-we depend on tutorials and the experience of others...Just my 2 cents. My point was/is, I won't switch until I have to. I have the "new" software, I'll use it when I have to. But dozens of thousands of people won't. As in "will not".. I have been working with computers since 1968. I have supported dozens of fortune 500 businesses. I currently support General Electric. Most software users never upgrade anything until they are forced to, and then it's kicking and screaming. Same thing for most companies.. A tiny fraction of LDS consultants are on these forums, a minute fraction of Family History software users are on these forums. We are the ones who will change. We are the ones who are aware of the issues. All I'm saying is that we will leave behind many people when PAF no longer functions. I am NOT saying that is a good thing, I'm saying we taught a generation of people how to do their family history (with PAF), and now technology is taking that away. Many of them will simply stop. I cou! ld give you a thousand examples, but I'm done. The world is what it is, and people as a group act predictably. I think as far as most users are concerned, we are re-creating the tower of Babel here... Maybe 5% of users want bells and whistles, 95% want simplicity... Regards, Fred ***************************
