    3. Unfortunately, no. The instructions came from the temple presidents, ward must supply the cards. Believe me, the Young Men president checked with each Temple. Same instructions. I am NOT the one doing the coordinating the Temple expedition, the young men president is. The prime reason is to give the youths the experience of what the youths in far away countries face with planning for long time to go to Temples such as Frankfurt, Freiberg, Stockholm, Berne, Madrid, etc. David Samuelsen Tom Kemp wrote: > The temples have all the names you need. > > Since you are coordinating with the Temples - wouldn't that be > appropriate for this Temple Expedittion? 3. Why not help the youth get their own names? Can you have the YM presidency get them together for a few hours each week and have them work up some names? It would have more meaning to them to do their own ancestors. Maybe get with the RS or HP and have them spend a day in the FHC working up names. When we had a goal of x names in a year we managed to do it by having 5 people work through their lines and get the cards printed. This would be easier with nFS but it still isn't impossible. As you said "The prime reason is to give the youths the experience of what the youths in far away countries face with planning for long time to go to Temples such as Frankfurt, Freiberg, Stockholm, Berne, Madrid, etc." What better way to give them the experience than to actually do the research themselves. 3. First question. Already working with them on that. The objective you stated was already met last year. The objective this year is to give them the experience the youths who live quite a distance from a temple to give them the idea how the members prepare, saving and travel at great expense, the distance ("Honeymoon Trail", etc) David Miles Meyer wrote: > Why not help the youth get their own names? 3. David wrote: Unfortunately, no. The instructions came from the temple presidents, ward must supply the cards. Perhaps this is a Utah "rule," if others of you don't deal with this. David is correct. If a youth group plans a temple visit that is not their annual temple assignment, then they must provide their own names. I deal with this all the time. My understanding is that the purpose of this rule is to keep the baptisms in balance with the other ordinances of the temple. Family files can be worked on as submitted by patrons, but the temple file ordinances need to stay somewhat in balance. I'll echo what Miles said. One problem with these temple trips is that the youth get the idea that the names just appear and the ordinances are the beginning and end of the work. With Utah families, it isn't so simple to suddenly produce over a 1000 names that legitimately need the work done. I have talked with our youth leaders numerous times to teach them that the research and identifying names comes first, THEN the temple trips can be planned. As you might expect, I haven't gotten very far with that. David, I don't envy you the position you are in. It's hard to feel like you might disappoint the youth, but it's also difficult to assure that the names you are given on short notice are sufficiently researched and truly ready to be submitted. I hope you are able to get the names you need, but even if you do, I would use this as a teaching moment for the youth leaders and help them understand the FULL process of performing ordinances for our ancestors. Use the statements of the prophets that tell us the research is a crucial part of this work, and set up some classes for teaching the youth and their leaders how to do that research. Once they get involved in it, they will have an appreciation of what is needed to do quality work. Temple trips begin to have much greater meaning when these kids put in the effort and sacrifice to identify their ancestors and thus "know" them when they head to the temple. Best of luck, Jill Crandell

    3. I feel I should respond as until July of last year.. I was in the Madrid Temple District for eight years.. A Temple trip involves an eight hour ride (each way) plus a night in the Temple Hostal in a caravan... I doubt you will duplicate that experience.. Then.. the Temple Worker giving them instructions, etc. translated by me or another bilingual person. Of course it is neat the kids can goof off in Madrid for the afternoon as the rest of us were doing other ordinances. I still feel new here in Utah.. In Spain.. I saw a Temple only 2-4 times a year.. now I see more than one 2-4 times a week travelling from Ogden to the Family History Library. Might I suggest that in exchange for tapping consultants for names.. the kids put in some time doing extraction work? Actually, this was one of the creative things we did many years ago. (The kids who participated are married and have up to four and five kids now.) We were approved for a special extraction project where the A cards had been done through extraction. We were the B extraction. Our kids data entered all of the names into PAF, searched the IGI, and then cleared them through TempleReady. There were three youths that coordinated it for their Eagle project or a Personal Progress project. I was the adult advisor. I taught RS, Elders Quorum, High Priests Quorum, Young Men and Young Women classes on successive Sundays to explain what we were going to do. The only way we could be approved on this was if the parents performed ALL of the ordinances after the kids did the baptisms. We needed the support of the entire ward. The kids signed up for shifts on Sunday afternoons and really worked hard for months. Just as we were ready to start submitting, the special extraction concept was ended. We were allowed to perform the ordinances, but we had to do them very quickly. Our ward performed all of the ordinances in less than a year. I can't even remember how many it was, but it was huge. (The cards in my file drawer are almost 14" deep.) We had major family support to give these kids that blessing. Since that time, special extractions have not been available. Outside of approved special extraction projects (which are no longer approved), we are only allowed to submit names of related individuals--as you all know. The kids cannot do extraction work to provide opportunities for baptisms. Believe me, we (at least in our ward) have worked this in every way we can think of. If you are suggesting that they should do indexing as "payment" for the cards that ward members give them, our kids are actively involved in that as well. We have a number of youth who are indexing for personal progress and faith in God requirements. I do push teaching them what it takes to research and clear a name, but there is no way to produce the number of names we need on a regular basis in our ward. I appreciate all of the suggestions that have been made today, and I hope that you see the reality of our situation. It is unique, and it is difficult. As I said earlier, if anyone has people ready for baptisms beyond David's needs, I stand ready to help you and share them with our kids. :-) Jill Crandell

    3. I am greatful to learn things from this list.. I did Indexing while in Spain.. and now in Ogden UT. I did not know that some did not have access to FS Indexing. Then again.. as some of us (ahem) have been on nFS for at least a year.. how can we share names with other youth groups? Alan On Mon, Jun 1, 2009 at 10:52 PM, W. 3. David, I don't understand why you say, "Not all have access to FS Indexing". Just go to http://www.familysearchindexing.org and click the volunteer button. There are tutorials on the web site - click the help button. Indexing is not restricted. Even non members are doing indexing. Kathy Taylor Portland, OR On 6/1/09, W.
