I have looked at the early St. George temple records from 1877 and on. When my family was doing baptisms for family members, they often used the term "friend". On further investigation, the "friend" turned out to be a family member. When the husband was proxy for his wife's family and ancestors, he gave the relationship "friend". When the wife was proxy for her husband's family and ancestors, she gave the relationship "friend". So, look closely at those entries for "friends". We certainly have it easier now. I've seen entries in old temple records that say "friend" for relationship as someone else mentioned, and thought that that was odd. So would someone in SLC have been checking these against the Temple Index Bureau to get them approved? Thanks, Paula
