John, I had used PAF Insight before I switched to RootsMagic 3 and when my subscription was finished for the year I was expected to pay for an additional year that I did not. As I remember, the cost was the same as the original subscription and that was what I was basing my focus on. It could be that Family Insight is different? No offense, but I have been trained at our FHC to use FamilyInsight along with the other librarians and we think that the syncing process is difficult to use. Although we like it better than the syncing for Ancestral File which we were also trained on to help Patrons that come in. I agree with you that some software programs do have yearly updates, RM does not have a history of that. Also I have also already received a free upgrade on RM4 since it was released and there is a note that automatically appears when an upgrade has been made. My point is that for the money, with RM4 you get an program with so much more power than PAF that also has a great syncing feature built-in. I just love all the great features RM4 has plus it is so easy to convert PAF over. I was thankful that whoever gave me the advice to change from PAF on this forum to RM did so even though I was using PAF Insight at the time along with PAF. When you buy a copy of FamilyInsight ($25) you get a year of free updates. You can continue to use it after that without paying a cent more. Most programs come out with a new version every year. To get the new version you have to pay an upgrade price. At Ohana Software we choose to make our enhancements available throughout the year so you can use them as soon as possible. Since we are continuously updating FamilyInsight and adding new features, most people choose to buy another year of updates for $15 when their initial year of free updates runs out. In practice it isn't much different than buying the updated version of any program, except that you don't have to wait a full year to get the new features. Nancy, I apologize that the matter wasn't explained more clearly to you at the time. Paf Insight and FamilyInsight have never been subscription-based products. The only reason that you would have to pay more after a year would have been to get an update. And the update price has always been $15. Aloha, John
I agree with Nancy, RootsMagic is fantastic and I am teaching it in my family history classes. I have several students that are really liking the way it syncs. I also like the feature of being about to search several search engines while you still can see the person you are searching for and their information. I love RM4!!! I am still using PAF and have a huge tree of over 30,000 names in it.Is it easy to transfer such a big file into Rootsmagic and does RM allow you to colour the names that have had their Temple work done for them etc.Or does one of the other programmes deal with transfers and name identification better. Dave, I personally do not have a huge tree that was transferred to RM4 but the Director of our Family History Center has at least at big a file as you mention and the other consultant in my Ward who recently changed to RM4 has a huge file and did not have any problems. There is color coding though I have not used it myself. Below is what I pasted from the Help Center for RM4: The normal text color is black, and this is used on screen an in reports. Color coding lets you assign colors to the names of people in your database so they are easily distinguished from others in the database. You can set or clear the display color for any group of people. Ø Set colorolor Lets you choose the color to set for a group of people. You can select from 14 different colors. Ø Clear colorolor Lets you clear the colorr for any group of people Ø Clear all colorolors Lets you clear (reset) the color for the entire database You can perform these operations for: Ø Ancestors of the current person Ø Descendants of the current person. You can optionally choose to include spouses as well with the descendants. Ø People selected from a list. If you choose this option, RootsMagic will bring up the Select people screen for you to choose the individuals whose color you want to set. Ø Highlighted person. Click OK to color code the group of people. If you specified the option to select people from the list, after you click OK the Select people dialog will open for you to choose the individuals whose color you want to set. Click Cancel to close the window making any changes. I would suggest downloading the demo if you want to try anything out. I believe that you cannot download your entire file so you would need to transfer a Gedcom with a smaller group to see how it works. Not sure if I gave you this link before or not: http://www.rootsmagic.com/demo.htm Nancy Scott Cincinnati, Ohio -----Original Message----- From: lds-ward-consultant-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lds-ward-consultant-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of david whittall Sent: Tuesday, May 05, 2009 09:02 PM To: lds-ward-consultant@rootsweb.com Subject: [LDS-WC] What genealogy program do I select?
