    3. it's for her own privacy. I can't see my own either. I can see living relatives I entered in nFS but not their ordinances, and I can see birth dates of my living relatives whose names I entered. If I didn't, I don't see. That is why I can see my 2nd cousin's name and his deceased son because I entered the record to maintain unity of the record. 3. Temple ordinances do not show up for the living in nFS. Now if she is checking for temple work for a deceased person and can't find it, she should check everyone for duplications. Sometimes the temple work shows up on just one file that has not yet been combined. A friend of mine could not find her brother's sealing to their deceased parents. Then we noticed she did not have a death date for her brother. Once she put that in, the sealing information appeared. It probably has something to do with the fact that she is living. If she is looking for unlisted temple work for a deceased person, she should check duplicates and if she still cannot find the dates, she can go to labs.familysearch.org and Family Tree and add it and the appropriate dates from her records, but it will say "conditional" beside the sealing date on nFS. For the deceased with no temple work showing that she knows is done, she should contact Family Support and ask them to help her correct the information. 3. We must remember to teach our members that the NFS and FT are for the deceased. The living are not visible in most cases -- even then only to those with the "need to know". They are there to link the deceased to the living members on the pedigrees. Having expressed these ideas, ask your friend a couple of questions. (1) Were her deceased parents sealed together the same day she was sealed to them? If so, that is the same date for the ordinance when she was sealed to her parents. She will be able to see the date they were sealed together on the lds ordinances screen. (2) Has she received an individual ordinance summary from her ward clerk (or the membership clerk)? Many clerks give out a report at the time of tithing. Unfortunately, many members do not realize how valuable that individual ordinance summary is. (Always keep the latest copy in your personal files.) 1. [LDS-WC] Thoughts on Individual Ordinance Summaries
    2. Mary S. Scott (Michigan)
    3. When we move from our ward, we should ask for a copy of the individual ordinance summary from the ward clerk or the membership clerk. We should then give the individual ordinance summary to the new bishop or ward clerk so that the correct membership records can be requested. Have the membership record numbers makes it much easier for everyone. This has been a good reminder for me. Our ward here in southeastern Michigan has a lot of changes right now with the recession and the trouble in the automobile industry. I think this is a good idea to tell people who are moving -- be sure to take an individual ordinance summary with you for every member of the family. This individual ordinance summary is invaluable in so many ways. It contains membership record numbers for all members of the family. For instance, my husband's contains not only the information for him but the names, birth dates, and record numbers for his parents. It also contants my name & birth date, as well as the date we were sealed in the Washington D.C. temple. For our children, it includes their names, birth dates, and confirmation dates -- plus their record numbers. By the way, when I am using our online ward directory, I often notice mistakes -- ie. babies who have not been added to the family or marriages that have not been recorded. When I see such information is missing, I often take the opportunity to say a gentle word to a clerk or the family. Family history consultants can encourage ward members to check their membership records as that is the first step for our family history pursuits. It is easier to correct the information before someone moves out of the ward than from the new ward. When our family moved back to Michigan from Germany nearly 10 years ago, my family file cards ended up in the sea shipment and not with our air shipment. I wanted to do the endowment for my mother at the Detroit Temple. (Her baptism and confirmation were done in Frankfurt.) The temple recorder used my membership number from the individual ordinance summary to find information on me and my parents (both non-members).  My mother's information was there because of a diligent ward clerk who created my original membership record. The temple recorder was then able to use other databases and check on my family file submission. I was then able to do the initiatory and endowment for my mother. I give this example as a way to show the importance of the individual ordinance summary and the record numbers contained on it. We just never know when it will be handy for us to have this information. I sure enjoy this email list. You teach me new ways of doing things -- for which I am grateful. Your testimonies and examples show through your emails and brighten many days. Thanks for all you do!! Mary Scott Northville Ward Westland Michigan Stake Detroit Michigan Temple

The only way is to ask her membership clerk for her membership print out. Remember too that adding a death date in FT on a membership record will not make the original ordinance information appear. The death date needs to be added by the membership department which will release the info to nFS and FT. 1. [LDS-WC] How to do individual temple work and sealing to parents in one stroke
    2. Sylvia H. Sonneborn
    3. Michele, If you put up the "parents and spouses" view for the child and highlight his father's name, then click on the temple icon to the left of the father's name (slightly above his name), it will show you what temple work is completed and what is still needed for the entire family. [This is a good way to check each family, as I like to work on the entire family. Be aware that before you do this, you need to have checked each parent and child for duplicates. Also, as you check each child, make sure the parents' names do not appear a second time underneath the Spouse title beneath the mother's name, as I have had that happen and then pick up a duplicate record of parents. When I combine, sometimes the temple work is already done. The cleaning up of a family is serious business and requires checking everyone for duplication!] If you make sure the whole family is ready before you click that temple icon to the left of father's name, then you can click on your preference at the bottom (assign to temple or do work yourself), and any work not completed on that family will be done if the information is complete enough on each person. If not, it will say it's not available. What a wonderful feeling it is to see the check make before the icon, open it up and see "completed" for every individual in the family. You can then go back to the child and click him on as parent with his spouse, click the "family icon" to the left of his name and do the work for any uncompleted and eligible family members. It will not redo the child's work [now showing s father] if it has already been specified for temple work with his mother and father's family, but it will show as "Ready" if you have just done his father's family. The sealings will stay "on hold" until the proper sequence of temple ordinances is finished, but eventually they will be done if assigned to the temple. Sylvia York, PA I find that if I submit an individual as a child, then the sealing to their spouse is "on hold" until the individual ordinances are done. If I submit the same person as a parent, I can clear the sealing to spouse but the sealing to parents is on hold until the individual ordinances are done. It's frustrating and requires me to go back a second time (if I don't forget) and clear the second sealing. I wish they would clear both at the same time and assume we have common sense (and the temple as well) to see that baptisms and endowments are completed. Michele

    1. [LDS-WC] How to get teens interested in FH? HELP!
    2. Sandra E Harris
    3. I have seen on this site what I thought were excellent suggestions for getting ward teenagers involved in family history. However, since that was many months ago and I didn't need that info at the time I didn't save it. I do recall a few suggestions but would appreciate hearing from any of you who have had success working with these busy, busy young people. My husband and I as ward consultants are excited to work with the youth but we want to start out right by impressing them with the importance of this work but also acknowledging how busy most of them are already. We do not want to say or do anything that will discourage them. Thanks in advance for your help. 2. John, I've done that, but the card for the temple still printed with the nickname form of the name rather than the accurate form of the birth name (which I know from several records is accurate, though she often went by the nickname form on things like censuses.) Nancy, The information printed on the card comes from the summary data for the person. To set the summary data, go to that person on NFS and be sure you have selected the Summary view from the list on the left. Then click on the down arrow next to the name. You will see all of the name variations that have been entered for her. Choose the one you like. That is the main name that will show for her from then on. You should just go ahead and do the temple work with the card you have. 2. Because part of the program needs to be worked on, I think. I have found that to be true as well, and names that I have put in as the preferred names because they are more complete are passed over for abbreviations and incomplete names--perhaps because they were in the system first, or who knows. But I find it somewhat irritating myself to find that when I print things out, it isn't the way I had done the corrections to fit the actual facts and not some single record where the recorder hadn't had time or inclination to do the entire thing. I have been assured that the people in question know who they are, and the problems that show up in the records, or the sealer who insists on calling Byron as Bryan--and that stuff doesn't matter in the eternal scheme of things. But then, why we are told time after time to get things as accurate as possible if they don't matter is beyond me. I will continue to be obsessive-compulsive about my records and try to get things right, however. Karen In a message dated 5/1/2009 7:14:08 P.M. I combined Eliza J. 94WF-HTM and Eliza Jane Brown KL67-82R. I thought when we combined records that the information would be all on the card. The Eliza Jane Brown was my person and I have her husband, and both parents. I have two combined numbers KL67-YQM and a 968Y-XWX I cannot remember now why I have these two numbers. Anyway when I printed the card it came out Eliza J. with no parents. I called SLC and was told the information is in NFS but go ahead and do the ordinances just as Eliza J. and for my records I can write Brown and her parents on the card when everything is completed. Question: Is there any way to get a card with Eliza Jane Brown and her parents or doesn't it matter? 2. I printed out two other sisters in another family. Their parents are in NFS and their ordinances are done and they are sealed together. The printed card does not show the parents and the block sealing to parents is blocked out. Why? 3. I have two brothers in another line. The parents are in NFS and are sealed. One brother's card printed out with parent's name the other did not. Why? 4. Another male card who's parents are in the database and ordinances done did not show the parents on the card and sealed to parents block is blocked out. 3. Thefirst names I submitted I sent in as individuals. They did not have very much information on the card. No parents. The ones that are submitted as families to finish work on family members have parents names. Many years ago we were told to submit names as families. If you want parents names, etc. on the cards this evidently still hold true. --- On Sat, 5/2/09, JCBrooks@aol.com <JCBrooks@aol.com> wrote: > From: JCBrooks@aol.com <JCBrooks@aol.com> > Subject: Re: [LDS-WC] Help understanidng NFS > To: lds-ward-consultant@rootsweb.com > Date: Saturday, May 2, 2009, 1:46 AM > I find that if I submit an individual as a child, then the > sealing to their > spouse is "on hold" until the individual > ordinances are done. > > If I submit the same person as a parent, I can clear the > sealing to spouse > but the sealing to parents is on hold until the individual > ordinances are > done. > > It's frustrating and requires me to go back a second > time (if I don't > forget) and clear the second sealing. 2. I find that if I submit an individual as a child, then the sealing to their spouse is "on hold" until the individual ordinances are done. 1. [LDS-WC] Unable to Print FOR Solution-
    2. Carrie Taylor
    3. Okay, Folks-I can officially have the word "stupid" tattooed on my forehead. Want to know what the solution to my dilemma was? I mistakenly assumed that the first page that came up when I wanted to reprint the FOR contained ALL the FOR's I had printed. I must have overlooked the little word in the upper right hand corner that said "next page"! When I clicked on that two more times the wanted FOR's showed up...It has been a long week of gardening in 90 degree weather-I guess I fried my brain...Thanks to all who responded and tried to help.
