Nancy, I apologize that the matter wasn't explained more clearly to you at the time. Paf Insight and FamilyInsight have never been subscription-based products. The only reason that you would have to pay more after a year would have been to get an update. And the update price has always been $15. Aloha, John

With the announcement that this program will no longer be supported, I have been considering selecting a commercial program. While NFS is great for recording information, I felt that research for new information might be enhanced by subscribing to Ancestry, RootsMagic or similar program. I realize that I have no knowledge about commercial programs and what they offer. Consequently, I felt some of you might share some of your insights and experiences that would help me in this decision. I am also looking for other programs for personal history, family atlas or any other programs you might recommend. Peter F. Thorne Toms River, NJ

    3. Harry: Personal Ancestral File (PAF) is the trademarked name of the LDS Church's desktop database manager. PAF versions 4 and 5 (with the latest subversion being 5.2) are derived from Ancestral Quest 3.0. These are the Windows versions of PAF. Earlier versions of PAF (3.0 and earlier) were DOS programs, and were not derived from Ancestral Quest. 3. Peter: I suspect that you mean, "Personal Ancestral File" rather than "Personal Ancestry File". Affectionately known as "PAF". A little known fact is that the Windows versions of PAF were created from an older version of Ancestral Quest, by Incline Software. (Incline Software donated a copy of the AQ code to the LDS Church in 1999, and thus most members of the Church are using a slightly modified copy of Ancestral Quest, but with the name changed to "Personal Ancestral File".) You might want to look at the current version of Ancestral Quest (you can download a free trial of the program at www.ancquest.com). 3. Nancy Scott said: > If you purchase Family Insight you will be paying a yearly subscription > ... That is a common misconception. When you buy a copy of FamilyInsight ($25) you get a year of free updates. You can continue to use it after that without paying a cent more. Most programs come out with a new version every year. To get the new version you have to pay an upgrade price. At Ohana Software we choose to make our enhancements available throughout the year so you can use them as soon as possible. Since we are continuously updating FamilyInsight and adding new features, most people choose to buy another year of updates for $15 when their initial year of free updates runs out. In practice it isn't much different than buying the updated version of any program, except that you don't have to wait a full year to get the new features. Want to know what the solution to my dilemma was? I mistakenly assumed that the first page that came up when I wanted to reprint the FOR contained ALL the FOR's I had printed. I must have overlooked the little word in the upper right hand corner that said "next page"! When I clicked on that two more times the wanted FOR's showed up...It has been a long week of gardening in 90 degree weather-I guess I fried my brain...Thanks to all who responded and tried to help. 3. Yep, and having said that, everyone MUST have a separate, personal genealogy database. Some of the early talk of members not needing one, is now moot. The existing Ancestral file and PRF data will not sync with members databases if that data shows the person as living, even if they have been dead 200 years. And if you have new information containing their death info, still no good, as the nFS's record shows them as living, and trump's your info..So we now have two databases to maintain, our own, and nFS's, which will contain somewhat different information..I have a several folks in my database who have died, but I can't sync them (with FI) because they are not dead in nFS, even though I have supplied the death info from my PAF file..I will try adding the info manually to nFS, but I have not had a lot of luck with that in the past... 3. Fred, you can. In Summary for individual, change information to correct one. 3. No, she wants to find her own sealing -- just to make sure it is there. So she really can't find it, just like she can't see her own baptism. I was afraid that might be the case. I wonder if this information is part of her membership record, by the way. So she could check her own Ordinance Summary to be sure. -------------------------------------------------- From: "Sylvia H. 3. Hello, list. How can I help a member find her own sealing to parents information in nFS? She was sealed to her already deceased parents many years ago. She just registered to nFS and she can see her membership information (wirh her married name, not maiden name), but no sealing information. Thank you already for your help. 3. Excellent point, John! I just added this to my file called "Youth Family History class and training." -----Original Message----- From: lds-ward-consultant-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:lds-ward-consultant-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of John Vilburn Sent: Saturday, May 02, 2009 4:03 PM To: lds-ward-consultant@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [LDS-WC] How to get teens interested in FH? HELP! Recently I attended a family history conference and talked with some of the FamilySearch Indexing representatives from Salt Lake. They said that many wards had more success with indexing when they approached the youth instead of the adults. There is a time and season for everything. For the youth, indexing may be a better fit for their lives than other genealogical pursuits. 3. There is a way to get it added quickly, use feedback to notify the membership dept and they will take care of it promptly. Even missing ordinances as it was in case of one couple I helped, her uncle and aunt's sealing was missing for over a year.
