    3. We have always been instructed to never use 'son' or 'daughter'. As long as the sex of the child is entered it will be on a pink or blue card accordingly and should be addressed by 'Miss' or 'Mr.' As someone stated earlier, if son or daughter is used too often it will come up for combining for all of them with that as the name. Male and female should never be used as a first name, either. The sex will also determine that. However, I have had instances where a child was born but the sex was not enter, just that it was stillborn or died shortly after birth. Those are the ones that I have no idea what to do with. 3. And I do have a true story to support this naming anomoly, still being done today apparently. Back somewhere between 1991 (hs graduation) and 1996 (when she married) my 3rd daughter got a phone call from someone named Sargent Pike. Since she had also had a few military recruiters calling, trying to talk her into joining one branch of the service or another, I assumed this Sargent Pike was a military recruiter, and I told her that when I called her to the phone. She corrected me, saying that "Sargent" (however it's spelled) was his real name, and he was a member of the Singles ward. 2. Yes, I did. That's one of the reasons I was so surprised when the nickname came up on the sheet that printed. I went back in and tried again (I have gotten in the habit of not saying "yes it printed," until I look at what printed.) I don't know why it printed out that way, but it did. So we moved on. I figure it this way: I will try to use the most complete name that I can find. If it is only a nick name form of the name that will print out because she's in there several times, or if all I can find is "Mrs. John Doe", or whatever, we'll go with it. I am not one to grab the first thing that crosses the desk, but sometimes it becomes futile to keep looking for more sources that give a different opinion. Or like the sealer that kept pronouncing my Dad's middle name as a totally different name. It was right on the paper, he knows who he is. We do the best that we can within reasonable effort. That's one of the reasons I love the NFS. If after the work is done, we finally find who the person was in their own right, and they were done as Mrs. John Doe, we can put in the correct name. Additional hours don't need to be spent redoing the work. Karen In a message dated 6/9/2009 5:05:29 P.M. 3. Amy, I agree with you that it will go through and that it may have been instruction that was given in the past. Not sure if you saw the email I posted about an hour ago. The User's Guide to NFS, (May 2009), on page 154 addresses when a first name if not known. It says that if you do not know the mother's first name, enter Mrs. plus her husband's last name or family name. For a child who died before being named, enter Son or Daughter plus the father's last name or family name. Using Son or Daughter does make it more specific, in my opinion, than using Miss and Mr. It also tells the relationship in a simple way that is easy to see. 3. For clarification, I only used Mrs. Mary Doe as a possible name. Not sure why you state that NFS does not recognize "Mrs." If you have an individual to connect the name to who has sufficient data, she will be unique because of the other information you have entered. User's Guide to NFS on page 154 actually addresses when a first name is not known. It says that if you do not know the mother's first name, enter Mrs. plus her husband's last name or family name. For a child who died before being named, enter Son or Daughter plus the father's last name or family name. Son or Daughter sounds the same as what the Recorder said only not in German. 3. This can be a real problem when someone has twins of the same sex who die unnamed Because someone always comes along and merges the two together. However, I have had instances where a child was born but the sex was not enter, just that it was stillborn or died shortly after birth. Those are the ones that I have no idea what to do with. 3. Search in the Help Center for Document 105243. It states: ordinance category. Close the window. Click Make names available for others to do. A window appears that allows you to select who will provide the proxy: the temple or you. For each ordinance you had selected for others to do, you will see the word "Temple." Click Next Page to see the following pages of names where you selected ordinances to be performed by others or by yourself. Click Done. (Note: If you want to change your mind and do the ordinances yourself, you may click the down arrow, and select Me. Now you can print a Family Ordinance Request and do the ordinances yourself). The names you selected for the temple to do are now in a database, and each week the Temple Department assigns names to specific temples, depending on their needs. The temples will perform the ordinances one at a time. The baptism could be performed in one temple, confirmation in another, initiatory in another, and endowment in another. When a temple pulls the name, the status in your reserved list and also on the LDS Ordinances tab will change to "In Progress," and the other ordinances for that individual will show "On Hold." The names in your reserved list that you assigned for others to do (that are showing as In Progress or On Hold) will not show on your Reprint Family Ordinance Request list. (Note: When you have chosen to do the work yourself, the names that are In Progress will show in the Reprint Family Ordinance Request list). When an ordinance has been performed, your reserved list will show "Completed," and the LDS Ordinances tab will show the date and name of the temple where the ordinance was performed. In the Family Tree Project (at http://labs.familysearch.org/), you will see your own name as the person who reserved the name until the ordinances are completed at the temple. Then you will see the date and name of the temple where the ordinance was performed. ----- Original Message ----- From: JCBrooks@aol.com To: lds-ward-consultant@rootsweb.com Sent: Tue, 9 Jun 2009 06:32:55 +0000 (UTC) Subject: Re: [LDS-WC] Making temple work available for others to do I don't want to print FORS. 1. Re: [LDS-WC] Making temple work available for others to do
    2. Perfect! Thank you. I will try this out. Michele In a message dated 6/9/2009 7:34:10 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, mscscott28@yahoo.com writes: I have used the temple file submissions a lot -- especially since my family file is large enough already. I particularly like submitting male names for individual ordinances through temple file. I save the sealings sometimes for my family file. In the two years of using New FamilySearch, this is what I have learned. (I will write this as simply as I can and try to help those on the list who are not familiar with the ordinance process.) As I find a family or add/edit information for a family, I notice if anyone needs temple ordinances. If many family members have already had their ordinances done, I concentrate on the other family members who still need their ordinances completed. It is important to seek out duplications, etc. for these missing ordinances because they might actually be completed already. I then choose the flashing arrow temple icon for the family (sometimes the individual in the lds ordinance section) and have two choices: "Assign ordinances to others" or "I will do the ordinances". (Wording might not be exact.) If I choose "assign ordinances to others", I can choose which ordinances I will do and which I want the temple to do. Sometimes I can handle a certain ordinance better than another one. For instance, baptisms and confirmations if our ward is having a youth temple trip. Sometimes I choose to have the temple file responsible for all the ordinances. After I make those selections, I will choose the "temple ordinance" tab at the top of the screen. Then I pick the last selection which has a heading "Make Names Available for Others to Do". I then go through the list which includes my family file entries. As I go through the lists, I determine if I want to keep a name in family file ("Me") or add it to the temple file ("Temple"). The family file entries will be blank if I have already processed the information through an FOR. If they are still available, they will have "ME" in the field. The ones that I have already released for Temple File, will have "Temple" in the field. I make the changes as I go through the information. Later, I can go back and switch the "Temple" back to "Me" if I want to do so. It is important to note that I cannot see which names are in Temple File from the other submission section: "Select Individuals or Families from my Reserved List". If I choose a person whose ordinances are supposed to be done in temple file, it will cause problems at the final steps of the FOR process. For me, I have learned to go into the "Make Names Available for Others to Do" BEFORE I create an FOR for family file. This is just me, perhaps, but it is a lot easier to print off the page for a family as I get the information ready the way I want it. I can then know for certain that the ordinances I choose for family files will be available for family file. As for the temple file submissions, it doesn't always happen right away. Sometimes I check later in the day or the next day. The work is marked "in process" -- sometimes for all the available ordinances or perhaps only for the first missing ordinance. As a person's ordinances are completed, their name is dropped off of the reserve list. They will remain on the list as long as an ordinance is missing. (So a patron can change the field from "temple" back to "me" if the ordinance(s) remains available. NFS is more flexible in these steps than FamilyTree.) One day I found a child who needed to be sealed to their parents. I cleared the name for the temple file and later that day she was sealed to her parents. It made me happy that the missing sealing ordinance was completed within hours. I live in Michigan and the sealing was done in California. What a great blessing NFS is for all of us! One final thought: if we are submitting information to help other ward members or family members, we should sign on as their helper. This helps the information we add to be credited to the proper submitter. It will say that a fact's contact is "so-and_so" and list their email address. The helper is listed with the tag "submitted by:". 1. Re: [LDS-WC] Making temple work available for others to do
    2. Is there no way to do it or instructions to do it on NFS? Seems odd. Michele In a message dated 6/9/2009 6:22:28 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, nascott@cinci.rr.com writes: Michele, I believe that this is an instance where looking at the information in Family Tree instead of NFS is helpful. There is a drop down box so you can select yourself or the temple. I have an ancestor that is assigned to the temple but the work is not yet completed and so it still shows up in my Temple list in Family Tree. I like the idea that the individual remains on the list until the work is completed. That way you know whether progress is being made or not. In my opinion, this is not a bug but a feature. 1. Re: [LDS-WC] Rejected un-named children!
    2. Agree. And this is helpful to temple workers/patrons who receive the printed name slips as well. Sometimes the name slips with just a last name are confusing to some patrons. They are instructed to use Miss/Mrs/Mr as appropriate. Michele In a message dated 6/9/2009 6:17:24 A.M. Pacific Daylight Time, msgen@earthlink.net writes: Please don't put "unnamed child" in to get around the system - the system will accept "Mr." or "Miss". When we see "unnamed child" at our Temple, we put a note on the cards for the patron the speak with the Recorder. Just last night I found the death certificate of a baby who lived 5 hours. She was unnamed, and the system took her as "Miss Cardstensen" just fine, so it does work and is appropriate. 3. There are certain and proper ways to list prefixes and suffixes. I find them in nFS and corrected them as I find them. Reverend is not a given name except of a few rare cases. Squire may be a given name but most are not. in nFS, when editing the name, there is a way to correct and display properly the information. W. I am sure I assigned the ordinances to the temple but they appeared in my reserve list and then I could not change the designation. When I phoned Support about it, they had me print out the FOR. I then had to take the form to the temple to have them cancel the ordinances and then start all over again. There must be some kind of glitch that makes this happen. There is no need to have them deleted in the temple you can ask the recorder to have the names released (to the temples) so you don't have to do the work all over again! Especially when you tell them there was a problem they are always willing to help!
