    1. Re: [LDS-WC] releasing names to Temples
    2. I think Nancy's experience is more typical. My male names languish for 6-9 months after initiatory for endowment to be done and then another 6 months for sealings. I wonder if it has something to do with the temple to which they are assigned. Isn't there a policy that sends your names to the temple closest to the zip code of the submitter? We have a small temple and there is probably a backlog....even for them to request. I wish they would just send the names in chronological order of receiving them. Once I release them to the temple, I really do not care if "my" temple does them or someone in China, Peru, Spain or even Salt Lake does them!!! Michele In a message dated 3/24/2012 11:47:13 A.M. 1. Re: [LDS-WC] releasing names to Temples
    2. Mary S. Scott (Michigan)
    3. First a bit of explanation:   For the past few weeks I have been requesting family file names to be done in temple file. (This means that I have been "releasing" the names from my own file as the ordinance cards have been printed. Then I go back into the pedigree to request the names. When the temple ordinance list loads, I have been placing these names into temple file.)   I have had to re-assign the names from family file to temple file because I just can't get the ordinances done.   This morning as I was working with the NFS temple ordinance list, I noticed that some of the names I requested endowments for in the past 30 days have moved into the queue to have their ordinances completed.   Meanwhile, names that were originally placed into the general temple file even 1 or 2 years ago are still waiting, waiting, waiting.   This raises lots of questions in my mind. How are these names being assigned?   The endowments are not being done in only my local temple. The endowments have been completed in temples all over the world.   Just wanted to share my own experience with the list since we have been dealing with the general temple file for a while.   Mary Scott       ________________________________ From: Megan Smith <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2012 12:44 PM Subject: [LDS-WC] releasing names to Temples We have discussed before releasing names into the Temple system. 3. I code "dit" thusly: Jean Baptiste dit Belleville /Provencher/ The problem is, a record might well be produced with Provencher as the last name, or Produced with Belleville as the last name. Listings of the name may say Provencher dit Belleville, or Belleville dit Provencher..Add variant spellings, and Americanization's (Provoncha, Provancha, etc) and life, not to mention NFS, gets interesting. As someone said, If I know the cemetery, it's a sure thing I'll add it. Leaving that off would be criminal... Regards, Fred (Provoncha) dit Uncle

    3. I'm sure there are more cities than Omaha with this problem: we have 5 specifically Catholic cemeteries in our city, 6 Jewish ones, and half a dozen non-denomination/non-ethnic "public" access cemeteries within the city limits. There are also numerous cemeteries in the county. I'm sure that's similar to other places with any size. There is no way I am not going to specify which cemetery is the correct one, so people have half a chance to find it if they want to go there...or if they want to know where the person was laid to rest, or scattered, or whatever. And no, it often is not the city in which they died. The standardized place names system needs lots and lots of work. I have suggested a gazeteer for Danish names which is at http://www.krabsen.dk/stednavnebase/ but no one has listened as yet. In the Danish standardized place names there are sometimes 4 choices for exactly the same place, there are 2 places with the same name in the same county which are not distiguished by the herred name. In Copenhagen, it is very difficult for instance to get the right church of many, many churches which you work very hard to get the right one and then all you can put in is Copenhagen as standard unless you really work at trying to find the place name. If Copenhagen for instand it would be nice to have a complete list of the possible churches pop up so we could choose the correct one. The system needs a lot of work to improve these. 3. When looking for place names that are not included in standardized place names, and should I want to make a suggestion via Support rather than just entering an alternate name, I find this site to be helpful: http://geonames.usgs.gov/ It is the site for the gazetteers for the Geodesic Survey folks out of Washington, DC. These folks are good at what they do. They do all the survey plats and coordinates for the United States and also have a list of similar sites for other countries around the world. Those are shown under Main Menu to the left of the screen. For the United States, first click Domestic Names. Then click Search which then appears just under Domestic Names. Search can be used in a variety of named features. I used to enter the town (Feature class: populated place) and state and wait for the county to come up. Now I let the NFS General Location Finder do most of that. However one can search all features at a time within a state, or just a feature name (without the state). Many old populated places are now just a post office, school, or cemetery. So if at first you don't find what you want, restructure your search and try variations. I once located a stream in the Midwest for someone on a Mailing List I was using. It had been named for his ancestor who emigrated to America. Since this list also gives longitude and latitude, one could use Google Earth to take a picture for one's records. One can also save a map right from the site. I have not used the foreign gazetteers as extensively, but they are official for their part of the world. They may work differently. Please note that the Search template doesn't "save" as a favorite very well. So I save the URL listed above in my favorites and click to the Search template. Hope this is helpful. Then, as I said before, if NFS standardization is unhelpful, hit the Escape key before the entry is final. To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]om> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Hi, I've been going round & round with the Help folks and we don't seem to be communicating. Can anyone tell me how to talk with the folks managing the Standardized Place Names? Issue: Arbie LeRoy Brooks (1889-1951) LHNR-VY5 Born in Big Creek, Monroe, Wisconsin The birth-place shows correctly in details as being in Big Creek, Monroe, Wisconsin (with some minor variations as to be expected with multiple submissions), however, if one looks at the map display for him or his father it shows Arbie's birth is in Big Creek, Monroe, Tennessee, NOT the Wisconsin location. Also if one does a duplicate search, it auto-populates the fields for the search with the (wrong) location in Tennessee. It appears that the Standardized Place Names system is firmly convinced that the ONLY place in the world that can possibly be Big Creek, Monroe County is a place of that name in Tennessee, REGARDLESS of what state is listed in the details. I tried truncating the place in Standard Locations by leaving off Big Creek and stopping at Monroe County, Wisconsin. If that instance is selected for the summary, then it partially solves the problem at the expense of being less precise. At least in the the search for duplicates it has the right state, but the Map pin is still in Tennessee because of the other entries with Big Creek in them. p.s. At Help's suggestion I deleted my previous (correct location) and added a new opinion with the same info. Didn't fix the problem. Any ideas on how to get the complete place name in the system and have it recognized as being in the right state? Or how to discuss the problem with the folks running the Standardized place names? I imagine my situation is not unique and that there are other instances of the same type of thing happenning with other localities. thanks, -- Dan Taysom [email protected] __________ Information from ESET NOD32 Antivirus, version of virus signature database 6960 (20120312) __________ The message was checked by ESET NOD32 Antivirus. http://www.eset.com

In the alternative you can submit the suggestion and supporting information using the Feedback link in the new FamilySearch. Requests will be forwarded for review and inclusion in a future release of the new FamilySearch. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Steve Kelsey Sent: Sunday, March 11, 2012 10:57 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [LDS-WC] How do I talk w/ people in Standardized Place Names?
