Regarding the sister who wishes to submit her ex-husband's name. There has been much discussion on this one due to all the variables and new submission requirements. I'd begin by having the sister read the new submission policies in NFS. (The consultant may need to assist with getting her registered.) It's the first thing listed under "What's New?" a link on the Home Page of New FamilySearch. It will tell her the order of precedence, which is similar to distributing an inheritance from someone who died without a will. If that doesn't answer the question of whether she is eligible and what she needs to do to become eligible to submit the name, she should talk with her bishop. He may, in turn, direct her to the stake president or temple president. Once that is straightened out, and only then: To put the name into the system, if she has all the permissions and the go ahead, select "Add Information" tab from the Home screen in NFS, then select "Add a Family that is not connected to my family tree" if she doesn't want to show any relationship. If she's okay with showing his relationship to her, she can choose "Add a family that is connected to my family tree." If she gets the "all okay" and wants to show him as her former spouse, she can also go to "See Me and My Ancestors" from the Home Page, then select "Spouses and children" under her name, and select "Spouse Options--Add or find spouse." Putting the name in may well require the assistance of her Family History Consultant, who could then teach her how to prepare and print a Family Ordinance Request. But all this depends first on reading the requirements, receiving permission, and consulting with her priesthood leaders, as needed. Jerry How do enter this on new family search and get the sheet ready? When > she had asked me in the past I knew that his mother was still living > so I told her she needed to get permission. Nancy, when you are on the Home page of nFS, and choose "add information", there is an option to "add an individual that is not connected to my family tree". That is one of the options if she does not want to link him to her as an ex-spouse. Of course all the same rules apply ie: getting permission, etc. Cindy On Mon, Jun 25, 2012 at 10:33 AM, <[email protected]> wrote: > After you get the permission then you should be able t o research census, > etc. to find his parent's info. > > Until u have permission, the rest seems not that important to me. > > Nancy Scott > > Sent from my Epic 4g > > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Nancy Gibert <[email protected]> > To: [email protected] > Sent: Mon, 25 Jun 2012 12:14 PM > Subject: Re: [LDS-WC] help for temple ordinance > > My question is how do I submit it. We have a new sister in our ward who has been a member for just over a year. She has gone to the temple once and did work for her sisters. She wants to do the work for her deceased ex-husband. I have been asked to help her get the card ready. I have his birth date, and place in Sheffield, England. Death 23 Dec. 2009 in Livonia, Wayne, MI I do not have their marriage or divorce date but she does not want to be sealed to he, she just wants the work done. How do enter this on new family search and get the sheet ready? When she had asked me in the past I knew that his mother was still living so I told her she needed to get permission. I don't know if she has done that yet but my RS president just called and asked me to help her get the card ready for this Friday. Thanks Nancy
Ask the RS if the Sister has contact the mother & gotten permission. The Church is becoming very adamant about that these days Were there any children from the marriage? They would take precedence over the mother in getting permission, I'd think. And she would only need permission from one of them. And for that matter, they might want to do their father, or be present when his work is done. Another website that we've found helpful for finding locations and all the names they have been called in the past is the Getty Thesaurus of Geographic Names from the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. Here's the URL. http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/tgn/ You can type in a name and have it search worldwide or else type in the country, e.g. Lithuania, and look for places that start the way you think it is. It includes "inhabited places", valleys, rivers, mountain ranges, etc. If you find what you are looking for, it gives all the earlier names it was called, the geographical jurisdictions, GPS coordinates, where they got the information, etc. We've found it very helpful. I don't have much experience in Lithuania, but in Poland and parts of the Czech Republic, names have not just changed languages but been renamed by various invading cultures. So a village in Poland might have an original Polish name, a German name, a Russian name, and, if it still exists, it's Polish name again. The former Czechoslovakia was an amalgam of several cultures: Bohemian, Austrian, German, and Russian. Same process. Here's another place to try. geonames.usgs.gov (no www) On the left, select foreign names, then GEOnet Names Server (GNS), then GNS search. Now, on the GeoNames Search page, select Lithuania from the box, top center. You'll have to try the ADM1 Names that pop up below it for each of your names. http://geonames.nga.mil/ggmagaz/ Note that you can search by the starting letters of the name and search without diacritics. Take a good look at this page and try the several varieties of searches shown below. By the way, for places in the USA that might be old towns, try geonames.usgs.gov and select domestic names on the left. That old town might now be a cemetery, a church, a school, or still a populated place. You can input name and state, and it gives you county, coordinates, and even maps. The US Geodetic Survey and the National Geospatial-Intelligence agency people do a fine job. If you're a Google person, enter the two words gnis search for the domestic search site. Finally, if your Family History Center still has gazetteers on microfiche, try finding one for Lithuania. Good luck to you. I was listening to a Polsh Research video on family search and she mentions the Daitch Mokotoff Soundex to find cities, I don't understand how it works. I see a spelling on a registration card that looks like Sracsiskan, Lithuania (Russian Empire) as a birth place. Can anyone help me figure out where this might be? In 2010 (August perhaps?), there was an article in "Family Tree Magazine" on doing research in the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania). On the website for "Family Tree Magazine" it's possible to buy the PDF version of the article for $4. As for the Russian town "Trotzki", try spelling it like the political leader "Trotsky'. Remember to try different spellings -- I think the German clerk would spell the town with the letter "z' because it is the sound he heard. I am no authority but I don't think that the "s" in German has that "z" sound. There is a Lithuanian museum in Chicago called the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture http://www.balzekasmuseum.org/. One of the links on this website is for genealogy and you might try finding out what information they have available. Do you have any information as to whom he was going to especially in Pa? There was quite a large community in eastern Pa especially in the coal mining districts. I would direct you to the Lithuanian genealogical group site and you would probably find more information there. Good luck. A similar thing happened when NFS went live in the temples and many names were half completed and went to limbo. I made a spreadsheet of all the names, added the Personal Identification Numbers and a date so another person could be sure. I wrote SL and forwarded the list and they were able to remove the "in progress or "Family Search" over time. They are getting more attuned to this now than they were before. If there aren't hundreds of names, it might get done within a week or so. Once they were back at "ready" status, I just reserved them again and either sent them to the temple file to complete or did them myself as I wished. Michele In a message dated 6/17/2012 1:45:54 P.M. Pacific Daylight Time, writes: Hi, I know similar topics have been discussed, but I need a refresher if someone would be so kind. I have a member that some years ago submitted through Temple Ready a number of ancestors for temple work. The baptisms were done but most of the rest of the ordinances were not done at that time by the member. He wants to continue where he left off. I gave him homework to do over the week: 1) see if he could find the cards with the partially completed ordinances; 2) check on NFS and do any combination that needs to be done before doing any further temple work, then re-checking to see if work still needs to be done; 3) I also discussed claiming any of his prior Legacy Contributor submissions to Family Search (I'll work further with him on that). So my question to you is: Assuming after all the above, NFS shows the work still not done, and he can't find his original cards, and that it is "In Progress" or "Reserved", presumably originally by him (but not on his Temple list) --- How does he reclaim the Temple Submissions (done under Temple Ready) so he can now continue the work? thanks, -- Dan Taysom [email protected] Please send the one word message SUBSCRIBE or UNSUBSCRIBE to [email protected] ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
