I am searching for the birth of William LAYTON (could be spelt Clayton) in Cheadle Hulme, Cheshire UK around 1809/10. William married Alice GARNER at Manchester Cathedral in Feb 1833 and was living in Timperley, Cheshire in 1841. Children Samuel, b 1833, Sarah b 1835, William b 1838, Mary b 1843, Elizabeth b 1846. Various spellings of the name developed no doubt with the assistance from parish clerks and other enumerators. It was spelt LAYTON in 1833 -38, CLAYTON in 183 -1841, and by 1881 it was spelt LAYTON and LEIGHTON. It certainly does make research more of a challenge. Have any other Layton researchers come across this problem?
