    1. [LAY-PREACHERS] Notice about Rootsweb Lists
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. This has been received from the Rootsweb administration: Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state. Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb. As an alternative to RootsWeb Mailing Lists, Ancestry message boards are a great option to network with others in the genealogy community. Message boards are available for free with an Ancestry registered account. Thank you for being part of the RootsWeb family and contributing to this community. Sincerely, The RootsWeb team We are presently setting up email groups at https://groups.io/. If there is interest in migrating this list to groups.io please respond to this message to that effect ASAP. With heavy hearts, Jim and Di

    1. [LAY-PREACHERS] Help Keep This List Active
    2. Jim Jackson
    3. We just wanted to encourage you all to make use of this list in your family searches. A large number of Rootsweb lists have been made inactive due to no messages over a period of time. We want to keep as many lists active as we possibly can and your participation will help toward that goal. If you have a "brick wall" in your family search, send in a message with as much information as you have and let's see if someone may be able to help fill in those blanks. Best wishes, Jim and Di

MON according to the 1881 Census. William took over the farm according to the 1891 and 1901 census, he spoke both Welsh and English and would probably have been involved in the Methodist Church. 3. ++++ My apologies if you're reading this twice. I have also sent it to METHODIST-L/rootsweb ++++ ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- Hello, I'd be grateful if someone is able to point me in the right direction - my ancestor was a lay preacher in the Methodist Church and I have spent many hours trying to learn something of his life and involvement in the Church, so far, to no avail. He was:- Richard SHEARD, my 2x great-grandfather Born: Dec 29, 1818 (Mirfield, Yorks.) Christened: Jan 24, 1819 (Parish Church of Mirfield, C. of E.) Married: Emma OFFICER (b. Hull 1828), in Hull 1850 Died: aged 87, in Worthing, W. Sussex, Mar 31, 1906 Buried: Worthing, April 3, 1906 His obituary shows that, "He preached in the Methodist Church in various parts of the country, for almost 70 years"......and........"he preached to large congregations in Leeds" Richard lived in Gainsborough, Lincs. (until the age of 42), London, Everton Lancs., Leeds, Worthing West Sussex - and I expect he preached in all of these cities On July 30, 1877 he received a bible from his theology students in Leeds (he was 58y.o.). They wrote:- "Presented to Mr. Richard Sheard from the members of his class as a small token of their respect. Leeds, July 30th, 1877" Unfort. the name of this place was not recorded In the 1881 census, he lived at 38 Richmond Terrace in Everton, Liverpool, with his family His occupation is shown as:- Wholesale Provision Merchant & Local Methodist Preacher ((He does not appear in Dr. Nockles' Methodist Archives)) Lester Sheard (Toronto, Ontario)

You could start by contacting the [Methodist]Conference archives for that area (those areas) with as much information about his early life as you have. It sounds like you may have to contact more than one Conference. I'm not sure Feasterville still exists, but you could do a search [I recommend http://www.google.com] for Chester and Chester county. (Also check Rootsweb, of course. There should be at least one Chester Co., SC, mailing list.) > The 1850 census records call him an editor and say > he was NC born. An 1880 Well....those census takers. Sometimes they talked with the person and sometimes they talked to the neighbors.... and, sometimes, they apparently guessed. There are no official birth records in North Carolina before the early 1900s. > record of his daughter Jennie does not list her > father's birthplace. That's unusual, but I do have genealogical records (not census records) in which nothing is listed about female ancestors' backgrounds. (Just one line, but it's a real pain as it's interfering with my ability to prove a fourth generation in that line, which was in a burned county.) 3. Go to http://www.umc.org and look for the page that lists Conference archives. Then find the archives for the Portland area and contact them, asking for info on your grandfather. Conference archives are often run by volunteers. If they aren't run by volunteers, they're often very lightly staffed, so the more info you can give them, the better -- and have patience. Now, sometimes, Conference boundaries change, or your grandfather may have been preaching in the neighboring Conference. What is a Free Methodist? 3. I am looking for more information about my g-g-g-grandfather Dr. LFW ANDREWS (1802-1875), who by 1833 was a Unitarian Universalist preacher, but I believe began as a 'traveling preacher'. I have a lot of bits and pieces after 1827. Any direction on where to begin to look for him before 1827 is appreciated. I do not know whether he had formal seminary education but I do not expect that he did. He married a Methodist minister's daughter, Jane GRAY of Ohio/western PA in 1827. I have found a records of marriage in Hartford Connecticut (from transcription of Hartford Vital Records from Barbour, 1668-1852) where he officiated: Harvey, m Lydia DENSLOW, Mar 22, 1832, by Rev L F W ANDREWS He is mentioned by name in papers re: the 1833 South Carolina Universalist Convention. In the early 1840s he taught at Feasterville Academy in South Caroliina. The 1850 census records call him an editor and say he was NC born. An 1880 record of his daughter Jennie does not list her father's birthplace. He raised his family in Macon, Bibb County, GA. His children were: Lewis ANDREWS HJ ANDREWS John C ANDREWS Jane (Jennie) G ANDREWS FA ANDREWS EL ANDREWS After his wife Jane died, he married Mary LAMAR.
