DNA is proving to be a useful tool in our genealogical quests. The test is on the Y-chromosome (the male sex chromosome). Unlike all the other chromosome, the Y-chromosome passes through the generations (through males only) virtually unchanged. As a result, if two men are related, their DNA tests will be identical or almost identical. If sufficient markers are tested, this would allow us to say the two men are related. If you haven't tested I invite you to join the Clan MacLaren Surname DNA Project (Lawson is a Clan surname). Or, if you wish, you can join the Lawson Surname DNA Project. If you choose the later option, I invite you to join the MacLaren DNA Project as your second project. Both the MacLaren and Lawson projects use Family Tree DNA and I recommend their 67-marker test. I cannot give costs on this list, but if you contact me directly at bobmclaren@earthlink.net I will give you the costs and answer any questions you may have. Yours aye, Bob McLaren Chairman, Genealogy Committee, Clan MacLaren Society of North America Genealogist, Clan MacLaren Society (based in Scotland) Administrator, Clan MacLaren Surname DNA Project (Worldwide) Member, Association of Professional Genealogists Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
